Easter is coming, and, if you’re like many people around the US, you’re anxiously anticipating the arrival of the Easter Bunny – and several pounds of chocolate and candy.

While you count down the hours, check out these 10 uncommon facts about the holiday.

Number 10. Most Americans agree on how to eat a chocolate bunny. 76 percent say the proper way to do it is ears first. 

Number 9. Some world traditions are incredibly elaborate. In Guatemala, for example, carpets stretching up to a mile-long are made from flowers and sawdust during the weeks before Easter. On the day of the holiday, people walk on it on their way to church. 

Number 8. There’s an Easter egg worth over 8 million dollars. Described as a cross between a Faberge and the Damien Hirst skull, the ornament is covered with over a thousand diamonds. Nested inside is a gold egg with a rock crystal dove inside that. 

Number 7. The Easter Bunny has a mysterious past. Details of its emergence as a symbol of the holiday are sketchy, but according to history.com, it traveled to America with the Germans in the 1700’s. The country has long told stories about an egg-laying hare. 

“We’d like to apologize for the Easter Bunny.” 

Number 6. The holiday brings out some people’s inner jokester. Perhaps giddy because it’s springtime, manufacturers make all sorts of goofy merchandise for Easter. Notable among the stuff is a card that features terrified eggs, a dish of colored liquid, and the caption ‘Where Eggs Come To Dye‘. 

Number 5. Egg decorating goes back hundreds of years. History.com says that the tradition dates back to the 13th century. At the time, eggs were a mandatory Lenten sacrifice, so in preparation for the day they could once again be enjoyed, people made them extra special by embellishing them. 

Number 4. In Australia they have an Easter Bilby instead of a bunny. Well, at least some people are trying to make that the case. 

“Bilbys can be found only in Australia. They are endemic to this country. There’s nothing like them anywhere else in the world.” [ABC Radio Australia]

Number 3. The annual White House Easter Egg Roll used to be held at the U.S. Capitol. Concerns for the preservation of the terraced lawn led to the signing of a bill that outlawed the use of the location. 

Number 2. A seriously large amount of candy is sold for the holiday. Annually, about 2 billion dollars worth of sweet stuff ends up in the hands, baskets, and stomachs of American consumers. 

Number 1. The largest egg hunt in history was held at Cypress Gardens in 2007. The Florida theme park hid over half a million eggs. Nearly 10 thousand children and their parents scoured the grounds looking for them.

Easter is a Christian holiday, when Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. According to the Bible, Jesus has returned from the dead three days after his death on the cross. Christians believe that Easter is the holiest day in the year, and is celebrated on the first Sunday, following the first full moon, and the first day of spring. As part of the Easter season, the death of Jesus Christ by crucifixion is commemorated on Good Friday, always the Friday just before Easter. In Western Christianity Easter marks the ending of Lent, a 40-day period of fasting, repentance, moderation and spiritual discipline in preparation for Easter.  Lent begins  on Ash Wednesday and ends on Easter Sunday. It’s a kind of spiritual discipline in preparation for Easter. Eastern Orthodox churches observe Lent or Great Lent, during the 6 weeks or 40 days preceding Palm Sunday with fasting continuing during the Holy Week of Easter. Lent for Eastern Orthodox churches begins on Monday and Ash Wednesday is not observed.

The day before the first day of the Christian period of Lent. In the UK, Shrove Tuesday is also known as Pancake Day (or Pancake Tuesday to some people) because it is the one day of the year when almost everyone eats a pancake.

Ash Wednesday – hamvazó szerda
The date of Ash Wednesday varies each year according to the date of Easter. It is always six-and-a-half weeks before Easter. The earliest possible date of Ash Wednesday is 4 February and the latest possible date is 10 March. Ash Wednesday is a Christian festival. During the meal Jesus took bread and wine and shared them with his disciples. Christians continue to share bread and wine as part of their worship in church.

THE LAST SUPPER: The Last Supper was probably a Passover meal – the meal which Jewish people share together to celebrate the time when God delivered Moses and the people from slavery in Egypt. The night of Maundy Thursday is the night on which Jesus was betrayed by Judas in the Garden of Gethsemane.

The Friday before the Christian holiday of Easter, that Christians remember as the day Jesus Christ was crucified. On this day Christians commemorate the passion, or suffering, and death on the cross of the Lord, Jesus Christ.

The most holy of Christian sacred days. The day commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ from his death by crucifixion. Christians gather together on Easter Sunday for a Sunrise Service. This service takes place on a hillside so everyone can see the sun rise.

Easter Monday, another UK Public Holiday, has little religious significance but is the occasion for numerous secular customs.

During the forty days which followed that first Easter, he kept appearing to his followers. Ascension Day marks the last appearance of Jesus to the disciples after his resurrection at Easter. The name ‘ascension’ comes from the accounts in the Bible in Mark’s Gospel and Luke’s Gospel that tell of Jesus being taken up into heaven – he ascended.

There are many customs and traditions surrounding Easter in Hungary, and most of them are about celebrating spring and rebirth. Traditional Easter meals are ham, braided loaf and boiled eggs and pickled horseradish. The ham is first eaten on Holy Saturday evening, at the end of Lent. On Easter Sunday, the traditional festive food is lamb.

In some areas of Hungary, Easter Monday is the day of sprinkling. In old times, young girls were dragged out by force to the well or the water trough and poured with a bucket of water or taken by the creek and bathed. Men used to go from house to house to sprinkle girls while singing and rhyming, for which they got red eggs in return. Today, perfume is used for sprinkling instead of water.

The reward of sprinkling was and is still food and drink, mostly spirits, and painted eggs. Eggs are ancient fertility symbols, and the allegory of resurrection in the Christian Church’s symbolism.

Egg painting is one of the oldest traditions, in fact it’s older than Hungary – painted eggs were found in some graves dating back to the pre-Magyar times. The technique was refined over the centuries and each region developed its unique and distinctive motives. Egg decorating became a form of art and it’s still part of the Easter celebrations today.

On Easter Sunday the Easter bunny brings presents for the kids, which they have to find during the Easter egg hunt.

Mark: Not really, what do I need to do?
S: Well, first of all, you should think about what you want to do for Easter. Do you want to have a big family gathering or just a small celebration with a few friends?
M: I think I’ll just have a small gathering with some friends.
S: Great, then you’ll need to start thinking about decorations. Painted Easter eggs and colourful baskets are always a hit. And don’t forget about the Easter bunny!
M: Oh right, I almost forgot about it. I’ll need to buy some chocolate eggs and maybe an Easter bunny costume.
S: That’s a good idea. And what about food? Do you want to have a traditional Easter feast or something more casual?
M: I think I’ll go for something casual. Maybe some ham and salads.
S: Sounds good to me. And don’t forget to hide some Easter eggs around the garden for your guests to find!
M: Oh, right. I almost forgot about that. Thanks for reminding me, Sandra. And speaking of Easter eggs, do you know how to paint them?

You will need:

• 300g golden caster sugar 3 medium eggs
• 300ml sunflower oil
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 300g self-raising flour, sieved
• 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
• 60g desiccated coconut
• 150g carrot, peeled and grated
• 225g can pineapple in juice, drained and crushed in a blender

FILLING AND DECORATION:

• 500g tub mascarpone cheese
• 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
• 60g caster sugar
• 8 tablespoons lemon curd
• good handful of mini sugared eggs
• 2x20cm round cake tins, lined with baking parchment

1) Set the oven to Gas Mark 5 or 190 C. Put the sugar, eggs, sunflower oil and vanilla into a bowl and whisk with an electric mixer for a few minutes, until pale and well combined.
2) Sieve in the flour and cinnamon.  Add the coconut, carrot and pineapple. Gently fold everything together. Divide mixture between the tins. Bake for 30 minutes, until well-risen, golden and shrinking away from the sides of the tin. Turn out on to a wire rack to cool.
3) To make the filling: Put the mascarpone, vanilla and sugar in a bowl and mix together until smooth.
4) Slice each cake in half, horizontally. Put the base of 1 cake on to a cake stand or serving plate, spread with 4 tablespoons lemon curd. Top with another cake and spread with half the flavoured mascarpone. Repeat with the other 2 layers of cake and arrange the sugared eggs on top.

Tip from the kitchen: The sugared Easter eggs tend to soften and the colours run, so pop them on the cake just before serving.

A hot cross bun is a spiced sweet bun made with currants or raisins, marked with a cross on the top, and traditionally eaten on Good Friday in the British Isles, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada, and India. The buns mark the end of Lent and the different parts of the hot cross bun have a certain meaning, including the cross representing the crucifixion of Jesus, and the spices inside signifying the spices used to embalm him at his burial.

There are many stories that indicate hot cross buns were baked on Good Friday for superstitious reasons. One tale states that buns baked on this day and hung from the rafters of a home would ward off evil spirits in the coming year. Another version mentions that sharing the bun with a loved one guarantees friendship in the coming year.

Place 400 g bread flour, 50 g caster sugar, 450 g dried mixed fruit, ½ tbsn of ground mixed spice, a pinch of salt and one 7 g sachet of easy blend yeast in a bowl. 

Pour the warm milk mixture into the bowl and add 1 beaten egg. Mix well and knead the mixture until it is smooth and elastic. (5 mins by machine with dough hook or 15 mins by hand.)

When the dough is soft, silky and elastic, place in an oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth and leave in a warm place for 2 hours or until doubled in size. 

When fully risen, take the dough out and ’knock it back’. This simply means kneading the dough again by hand for 5 minutes. Divide the dough into 16 equal pieces and roll them into balls. Mark a cross in each ball and place on a greased tray. Cover with a damp cloth and leave for 40 minutes. 

Brush the risen buns gently with a beaten egg. Mix together 3 tbsn of flour, 1 tbsn of sugar and 2 tbsn of water to make a thick paste. Carefully dribble 2 lines over the buns to form a cross. 

Bake in pre-heated oven for 15-20 mins. When the buns come out of the oven, mix together 1 tbsn of sugar and boiling water and brush the glaze over the buns.

When the time came he sat down with the disciples and said:

 “This is the last Passover I’ll eat until we all eat it together in the kingdom of God.”

Taking the bread he broke it and gave it to them, saying:

“This is my blood given for you. Eat it in my memory. This is my blood of the new agreement (testament), which is poured out for the forgiveness of sins. “

Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Getshemane.

Jesus knelt down and prayed:

“Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me, yet not my will, but yours be done. “

While he was still praying a crowd with swords came led by Judas who betrayed Jesus. Then seizing him, they led him away.

Jesus was taken to the high priest and the decision was made to put him to death. He was handed over to Pilate the governor. Pilate interrogated him, but Jesus remained silent. Pilate could find no reason to sentence him to death and as the custom was to free a prisoner at this time of year, he asked the crowd:

“Do you want me to release Jesus or this prisoner Barrabas?”

The crowd shouted at Jesus: “Crucify him!”

Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barrabas to them. He had Jesus flogged and handed him over to be crucified.

They mocked him, twisted together a crown of thorns for him and they began to call out, ‘Hail, King of the Jews!’ Then they led him out to crucify him. They forced Jesus to carry the cross. He was nailed to the cross. People around shouted insults saying “Come down from the cross and save yourself!”

One of the criminals hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”

But the other criminal rebuked him. ‘Don’t you fear God?’ ‘We are getting what we deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong. Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.’

Jesus answered him: ‘Today you will be with me in Paradise.’

At noon darkness came over the whole land. Jesus cried out in a loud voice:

“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two. The earth shook.

“It is finished!”

After Jesus said this, He died.

When the centurion who stood there in front of Jesus saw how he died, he said:

‘Surely He was the Son of God!’

He was buried in a tomb cut out of the rock.

On the third day the women came to anoint the body.

“Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, he has risen!”

Remember what he told you: The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.

Easter eggs are special eggs that are often given to celebrate Easter or springtime.

The oldest tradition is to use dyed and painted chicken eggs, but a modern custom is to substitute chocolate eggs, or plastic eggs filled with confectionery

The custom of the Easter egg originated in the early Christians of Mesopotamia, who stained eggs red in memory of the blood of Christ, shed at his crucifixion.

The Christian Church officially adopted the custom, regarding the eggs as a symbol of the resurrection in 1610 A.D.

In Christianity Easter eggs symbolize the empty tomb of Jesus. Though an egg appears to be like the ‘stone’ of a tomb, – a bird hatches from it with life, so the Easter egg for Christians is a reminder that Jesus rose from the grave and that those who believe will also experience eternal life.

But the practice of decorating eggshells is ancient, pre-dating the Christian tradition of Easter.

Eggs, in general, have been a traditional symbol of fertility, and rebirth. Ostrich eggs with engraved decoration that are over 60,000 years old have been found in Africa. Decorated ostrich eggs, and representations of ostrich eggs in gold and silver were commonly placed in graves of the ancient Egyptians over 5,000 years ago.

Easter eggs have inspired the form of many similar objects – both precious and mundane, including chocolate eggs, monuments, and the famous Fabergé eggs.

So how did Easter go from the day Jesus rose again to the day giant bunnies leave pastel-coloured eggs all over your house?

In case you’re unsure — no, there are no Easter Bunny cameos in the Gospels. The first historical references we have to an Easter Bunny date to the 16th-century German tale of Oschter Haws. According to this legend, a mysterious creature named Oschter Haws, or Easter Hare, visited children while they slept and rewarded them for their good behaviour (similar to Santa). The children made nests for these hares, who would then lay coloured eggs in them.

The tale was then brought to America when Germans emigrated here in the 1700s. The legend of the Easter Hare continued to grow in America, especially as books like The Tale of Peter Rabbit (1902) and The Easter Bunny That Overslept (1957) were published. In 1971, ABC aired a television special called Here Comes Peter Cottontail, which was based on the 1957 book.

But where did Germans get the idea to associate a hare with Easter? The history here is murky. Some people suggest that in antiquity, hares were associated with new life, due to their high fertility rate. Some have theorized that there is a connection between hares and the Anglo-Saxon goddess Eostre — the goddess from whose name “Easter” may be derived, according to one source.

The origins of the Easter egg

The history here is largely speculative. One theory is that early Christians came to associate an egg with the Easter story: just like a hard shell contained new life, so the tomb of Jesus contained his resurrected body. According to another legend, an egg merchant named Simon of Cyrene was forced to put down his egg basket in order to help Jesus carry his cross to where he would be crucified. When Simon returned to his basket, he found that his eggs had been miraculously decorated.

One thing that is certain, though, is that by the 13th century, it was customary for Christians to abstain from eating eggs during Lent, the 40 days leading to Easter. Of course, hens didn’t abstain from laying eggs during Lent, and so by the time Easter rolled around, there might have been a surplus of eggs to sell or give away by the basketful.

Decorating eggs predates Christianity, as evidenced by decorated ostrich eggs dating to ancient Egypt. The Easter tradition of egg dying, though, probably originated in ancient Christian communities in Mesopotamia who coloured chicken eggs red to symbolize the blood of Jesus. (To this day, Orthodox congregations continue this practice.)

The most famous example of a decorative Easter egg is the Faberge egg. In 1885, Tsar Alexander III commissioned a Russian jeweller named Peter Faberge to design a gold-encrusted egg as an Easter present for his wife. Over the next 30 years, Faberge’s company made 52 more eggs, 43 of which have survived. (Some eggs were lost or destroyed during the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917.)

Christians also may have picked up the egg symbol from Passover — the hard-boiled egg is one of the seven symbols set out on the Seder plate. Easter and Passover, after all, are strongly connected to each other. According to the Gospel accounts, Jesus celebrated a Passover meal with his disciples just before the crucifixion. After the disciples began proclaiming Jesus’ resurrection, they continued to celebrate a yearly Passover in the way Jesus had instructed them to, remembering his death and, more importantly, what his death and resurrection meant for the world.

And now Americans spend $2.2 billion on Easter candy

According to the National Confectioners Association, the first edible Easter eggs date to 19th-century Europe. Germans made the sweets out of sugar and pastries, and slipped into the hats and bonnets that children laid out overnight. (These bonnets were the precursors to baskets.) Easter candy continued to be popular, but it wasn’t until the 20th century that innovations in candy-making production allowed it to become the Easter staple that it now is. But according to a 2012 poll, seven out of 10 American adults celebrate Easter as a religious holiday.
