Plane crash survivor killed by two emergency vehicles

A teenager who survived a plane crash died after being run over twice by rescue vehicles, an inquiry has found. Ye Meng Yuan was on the runway when she was covered with firefighting foam before being mown down by a truck doing the spraying.

‘Shortly thereafter, the victim (no longer covered due to the displacement of foam by the vehicle tyres) was pointed out to the fire attack chief. He had the body covered with a blanket,’ the report on Miss Yuan’s demise stated. The driver of the second vehicle that hit the teenager at San Francisco airport claimed he hadn’t seen her, although at least two others said they had and swerved to avoid Miss Yuan’s body.

Giving evidence at the hearing, Dale Carnes, of the San Francisco fire department, apologised for ‘the additional insult to the deceased’ but denied her death was caused by his team being ‘careless or callous’. A definitive cause of the Asiana Airlines crash on July 6 is yet to be decided.

Why cooking sausages in a fireworks factory before bonfire night is a bad idea

Bonfire night came early for one hungry OAP when he foolishly decided to cook sausages in a fireworks factory.

Hung Feng, 72, was preparing a snack when the flames from his cooking started a blaze that completely destroyed the whole building, firefighters believe. He had promised to ‘keep an eye’ on the Chinese factory for his son, the building’s owner, Ho Feng, 48, who had gone out for the evening. ‘When I left I know that my father told me he was going to cook some Lap Cheong (Chinese sausages),’ explained Mr Ho. ‘As he was a firework maker as well it didn’t occur to me that I would need to warn him.’

The whole building was destroyed in an explosion caused by the fire, sending tens of thousands of pounds worth of fireworks up in smoke. As firefighters tackled the blaze in Penggang village, Hubei province, locals were treated to a spectacular two-hour fireworks display. Mr Ho added: ‘It is a tragedy but at least my father escaped, he ran out and was unhurt.’

Doner kebab ‘inventor’ Kadir Nurman dies in Berlin

The Turkish immigrant credited with inventing the doner kebab has died in Berlin aged 80. Kadir Nurman set up a stall in West Berlin in 1972, selling grilled meat and salad inside a flat bread. He had noticed the fast pace of city life and thought busy Berliners might like a meal they could carry with them. While there are other possible "doner inventors," Mr Nurman’s contribution was recognised by the Association of Turkish Doner Manufacturers in 2011.

The combination of juicy meat, sliced from a rotating skewer, with all the trimmings and optional chilli sauce, has since become a firm fast-food favourite in Germany, and elsewhere. According to the Berlin-based Association of Turkish Doner Manufacturers in Europe, there are now 16,000 doner outlets in Germany. More than 1,000 exist in Berlin to tempt peckish late-night revellers on the capital’s streets. German companies producing the meat and the machinery for grilling supply 80% of the EU market, the BBC’s Steve Evans reports from Berlin.

Mr Nurman, who emigrated to Germany in 1960, did not patent his invention, and thus did not particularly profit from the doner’s subsequent success. But in a 2011 interview with the Frankfurter Rundschau, he expressed little bitterness. He was happy that so many Turkish people were able to make a living from doners, he said, and that millions of people ate them.

Internet Sensation ‘Grumpy Cat’ Wins An Award

A cat that became an internet sensation due to the apparently grumpy looking expression on her face has won an award.

Grumpy Cat, real name Tardar Sauce, was handed a Lifetime Achievement Award at The Friskies in New York. Owner Tabatha Bundesen was presented with a gold-plated cat-shaped statue at the cat food brand’s second annual cat video awards. The award was given to the seemingly moody feline for "doing the most to help cats take over the internet".

According to Tabatha the 1-year-old pet cat’s permanently grumpy-looking face is actually due to feline dwarfism. Grumpy Cat became an internet sensation after her picture was posted to the social news website Reddit by Tabatha’s brother Bryan last year. The image went viral and now Tardar has her very own Facebook page, with over 1.3 million likes, Twitter account, with 116,000 followers, and has launched a new book.

Say hello to Emily Bland and her unusual pri-mate – Rishi the orang-utan!

Human and ape first met as toddlers and have gone on to form a strong bond that has lasted for years. The pair were introduced back in 2008 when Emily’s photographer father Barry took her with him on a shoot at the Myrtle Beach Safari park in South Carolina. And like something out of The Jungle Book, Emily and Rishi happily played for hours together, with Emily even giving Rishi a lift in her doll’s pushchair.

Despite the fact Emily and Barry live in Britain the firm friends have met up regularly over the years to enjoy a whole host of fun and games. This has included picnics – with bananas firmly on the menu – and splashing around in a paddling pool. Move Over Cupcakes … Hello Cro-Dough

Move over cupcakes, goodbye whoopee pies there’s a hot new bakery product in town. Cronuts – a cross between a croissant and a donut – have taken America by storm since being invented by the Dominique Ansel Bakery in New York. And now the pastry sensation – renamed the cro-dough – has crossed the Atlantic and can be snapped up at Rinkoff Bakeries in London.

Jennifer Rinkoff, whose great grandfather first founded the 100-year-old bakery, is the woman to thank for bringing the tasty treat to British shores. Speaking about the birth of the cro-dough, Jennifer comments: "I saw what the Dominique Ansel was making in America and I thought no one’s making them in London, so I looked on Twitter and thought this looks really simple to make. We have the dough here, we make croissants and danish pastries, so I went into the bakery and it took me about three days to perfect the Cro-dough – to make the height, the flavours – and it escalated from there. I put one picture of a Cro-dough on Twitter and it just blew up. Time Out magazine produced an article about me and customers have been coming from all over the country; some customers even took Cro-doughs back to Belgium".

To begin with Jennifer made just three trays of cro-doughs but demand has grown and grown and now the bakery produces hundreds. Jennifer says: "We started off with three trays (18 on a tray), but we’re now making 200 a day and selling out. We’re not able to make more because volume is not a thing for us. Sometimes we sell out at 11am and we have to make a second batch".

Hungry customers can choose from three flavours – custard, which is the most popular, as well as raspberry coulis and apple with chocolate. Describing the process of making a cro-dough, Jennifer comments: "The dough needs to be made a day or two before, it is then cut out with a machine, left for another day and then fried. Because our bakery runs 24/7 we’re always monitoring the production. It’s labour intensive; we have to inject the filling, cover and finish the Cro-dough. And frying is probably the trickiest part as you want to get a good height and colour".

Jennifer is a 4th generation Rinkoff baker – getting her baking skills from her great grandpa, her dad and his two brothers. Some of their recipes are over 100 years old and the bakery has always been located in the East End of London.

Real life Spiderman? Daring window cleaner wears superhero suit to scale 78th floor

A window cleaner in Indonesia has become a celebrity for scaling the walls dressed as Spiderman. Sardi the ‘Spiderman’ has been cleaning the windows of a hotel in Solo, Indonesia, for two and a half years and has earned a reputation for dressing as Spiderman when he works. The 35-year-old masked crusader scales the building using just ropes in his dedication to clean the windows up to the 78th floor.

Sardi took the job because he felt compelled to conquer the heights, but it does not come without its downsides. The Spiderman costume is heavy and tires Sardi out, and the face mask can leave him gasping for air. Guests at the hotel often watch Sardi clean the windows, and members of the public even stop to admire his handiwork.

Earlier this year the UK had its own superhero in the shape of the Bradford Batman, aka Stan Worby, who was later arrested for burglary.

Strangers Look Like Twins

Canadian photographer Francois Brunelle’s black and white photos show his fascination with ‘doppelgangers’, people who have a look-alike. The essence of his project – started in 2000 – is to find people, totally unrelated to each other, sometimes from different corners of the world that share the same physical appearance and look more like twins than strangers, although, amazingly none of his portrait subjects are even related.

The pairs in these images are not twins – or even related. This stunning photo series shows complete strangers who look almost identical. The I’m Not a Look-Alike project is the brainchild of Francois Brunelle, who has spent 12 years tracking down people with eerily similar features.

Francois, 62, from Montréal has flown around the world in search of doppelgangers to shoot in black and white. And amazingly, it was British comedy character Mr. Bean that inspired the whole idea.

Francois explains: "I was inspired by two things: First I used to see look-alikes all over since a very long time. Second, my own likeness with TV character Mr. Bean. The project is about sharing the passion that I have for the likeliness in people. It allows me to concentrate on the face of my subjects and bring the spectator to a close encounter with them. Some of them are from the same city, others from different countries, different cultures. I am fascinated by the fact that a man born and raised in Hungary would bear a strong resemblance to a person born and raised in Canada. Or that couple, living together just look like brother and sister. This being said I am still looking for look-alikes, especially in the UK but in any country in fact, in order to finish the part of the project implying taking the actual photos. After that I have to find a museum willing to exhibit the 200 photos look-alikes taken by me since 2000."
