St. Lucy’s day

The 13th of December celebrates the virgin St Lucia of Syracuse, who was martyred for her Christian faith in 304. Due to her purity she is associated with light, and her feast day is on the 13th of December because in the old calendar this used to be the longest night of the year.

St. Lucy is a very popular saint in the Scandinavian countries, where people feel the lack of sunlight more intensely, and on this day every town and village in Sweden chooses its own Lucia, who is driven around town, preferably in a horse-drawn vehicle, to spread light and song in food stores, factories, old-age homes and medical centres. St Lucia wears a white gown and ‘light in her hair’, which in practice means a crown of electric candles in a wreath on her head. Each year, a national Lucia is proclaimed, with candidates presented in the newspapers a couple of weeks in advance. This is also the day of the Nobel awards closing ceremony and the laureates are greeted by St. Lucy.

In Hungary, Luca-day is remembered as the day when witches are abroad (probably because this used to be the longest night of the year), so people had to protect themselves from evil. They ate garlic and even smeared some on their animals to keep evil spirits away, drew crosses on gates and spread some ash to stop them from entering homes. Brooms were also locked away so witches couldn’t go for a ride. Many superstitions are connected to this day: girls tried to foretell the future by cooking 12 dumplings, hiding a note with male name in each, and the first one to come up to the surface of the boiling water held the name of their future husband. The most well-known superstition is that of the Luca stool, which has to be carved starting today and finished by Christmas. The person who stood on the Luca stool during the midnight Mass was able to recognize the witches in the community.

Australian man sets new world record with highest-ever number of lights on Xmas tree https://www.5percangol.hu/news_of_the_world/australian-man-sets-new-world-record-with-highest-ever-number-of-lights-on/ Wed, 09 Dec 2015 08:09:40 +0000 https://cmsteszt.5percangol.hu/australian-man-sets-new-world-record-with-highest-ever-number-of-lights-on/

Australian Family broke Guinness World Record for Christmas light display with 518,838 flickering bulbs (but some of the neighbours have stopped speaking to them)

Father-of-three David Richards, from Canberra, Australia first won the title in 2011 with 331,038 lights. However, he was beaten by a family from New York who installed 346,283 – but Mr Richards vowed to regain the title. His family officially broke the record with 502,165 lights in 2014 much to the annoyance of his neighbours.

The sight attracted neighbours from miles around – although not all of them are impressed. Some have not spoken to the family since 2011. Mr Richards, who lives in the suburb of Forrest with his wife Janean, son Aidan and daughters Caitlin, and Madelyn, insisted most neighbours supported the display. He added: ‘I have always loved Christmas. Having the Christmas lights with the community coming in and sharing it is a time when you get to know people you probably should know better, I guess.’

Guinness World Records confirmed the family’s charity feat had officially the most Christmas lights on a residential property. The twinkling bulbs cost about £1,400 to run for a month – but the sum had been donated by a local power company.

The stunt is open to the public, and hundreds of people have already visited and posted videos on Youtube. It raises funds for children’s charities. Up to 70,000 people visited the light show when he put it on in 2011 and it raised £44,000 for charity.

The lights took a lot of time to put up but Mr Richards did not have to count them all himself – instead delivery records and invoices were used to certify the total. However, he said he will need a generator if he puts up any more lights.

He broke the world record for the most lights on an artificial Christmas tree for the third time in November 2015. The Christmas tree is 22 metres high and is covered in 518,838 LED lights, with 1.6 kilometres of plastic fir and is topped with a 1.5 metre star.

Mr Richards started working on it in December last year to build the dazzling display with the help of volunteers in order to raise money for families affected by sudden infant death syndrome.

Dare You Eat One: False Widow Macaroons

Dare you chomp into one of these macaroons featuring the creepy crawly of the moment – the dreaded false widow spider?

The arachnid ‘treats’ were cooked up by the Leeds-based alternative baker known as Miss Insomnia Tulip. She took inspiration from recent reports of sightings of Britain’s most venomous spider and decided it was “also a perfect time of year for grisly treats”. Miss Tulip says the abdomens are fashioned from a roasted coffee covered in chocolate “so they are nice and crunchy” and the legs are made from fondant icing. The Macaroon is coffee flavoured.

Here, Miss Tulip explains how to create your own Great British Gross Off by making your own: “These were a very quick make. Baking the Macaroons took the longest at an hour, while the spiders were 15 minutes each. I coloured and rolled a very thin sausage of fondant light brown, divided into 8 then tapered each end. Then I segmented the legs with a cocktail stick. I laid these (legs) onto a macaroon. Then I fashioned a head out of the same fondant using a cocktail stick and my fingers to sculpt the tiny pincers and mouth. The Abdomen is a crunchy roast coffee bean covered in dark chocolate; you can find these in most supermarkets. Finally I took some edible paints to add the markings and define the legs.”

2. venomous

Garzonlakás konténerből https://www.5percangol.hu/news_of_the_world/garzonlakas-kontenerbl/ Mon, 16 Dec 2013 08:41:14 +0000 https://cmsteszt.5percangol.hu/garzonlakas-kontenerbl/

Housing the homeless in time for Christmas: Shipping containers open as temporary accommodation after being converted into studio flats

A block of flats made out of shipping containers has been officially opened in a bid to tackle a city’s housing crisis. Brighton Housing Trust is using the 36 adapted containers to provide temporary accommodation for homeless people in the city. The containers have been transformed into self-contained studio flats, and feature bathrooms, kitchens and plasterboard walls. The housing trust and developer QED Property Ltd submitted the plans for the scheme to help solve the ‘acute shortage of affordable accommodation’ in the city. High property prices averaging around £302,000, steep private rents and low average wages in the seaside city have contributed to high levels of homelessness.

Following the scheme’s official opening last week, Andy Winter, chief executive of Brighton Housing Trust, said: ‘There is an acute shortage of affordable accommodation in Brighton and Hove.  ‘The number of street homeless people in the city has increased from 37 in November 2011 to 43 in 2012 and 50 in November 2013. However, there is a wide consensus that the actual figure is more likely to be between 70 and 100. This development makes a small contribution to tackling the ever-increasing need for housing.’

The structures were designed for a social housing project in Amsterdam two years ago but the scheme had to be abandoned after hitting funding difficulties. Ross Gilbert, from developers QED Property, said last week: ‘Today is the high point of this exciting and innovative housing project as the 36 residents move into their new homes. Our temporary use of a car park at a former scrap metal yard demonstrates just what can be done in six weeks to help solve the acute housing shortage.’

Retailer Homebase, which has used shipping containers in its adverts, has provided starter packs for the 36 residents. The packs include beds, wardrobes, chests of drawers, bedside cabinets and kitchen and other household equipment. Graham Heald, Homebase retail and distribution director, said: ‘We are delighted to be supporting this creative initiative, which is supporting the local community with short-term, affordable accommodation. Although this isn’t a long term solution for homelessness, we believe that everyone deserves to live in a home they love, and so we’re providing starter packs to each tenant which enables them to do just that.’

(Karácsonyi) csodák pedig vannak … ennél a légitársaságnál biztosan:) https://www.5percangol.hu/news_of_the_world/a-karacsonyi-csoda/ Thu, 12 Dec 2013 08:53:30 +0000 https://cmsteszt.5percangol.hu/a-karacsonyi-csoda/ WestJet Airlines surprises passengers with gifts after they touch down from flights

Christmas miracle or sickly sweet PR stunt? Either way, it’s unlikely these WestJet passengers care after they had their wildest holiday wishes granted during a flight across Canada. Travelers arriving at Toronto Pearson and John C. Munro Hamilton International Airports for flights to Calgary were surprised when a virtual Santa Claus asked what they wanted for Christmas.

A promo video sees a variety of passengers telling Father Christmas their dream gift. With their wishes made, the footage shows them merrily taking their place on the aircrafts. As they relax onboard, the video then flicks to behind-the-scenes shots of WestJet elves rushing out to buy the wished-for gifts. When the flyers touch down in Calgary, they mill around the seasonally decorated baggage claim hall — and are shocked when their presents, instead of suitcases, arrive on the carousel. A boy gets super excited as he unwraps a brand new Android tablet, while a family can’t stop grinning as they open up a big-screen TV. One man clearly wishes he had asked for more, however, when he opens up a small package containing just socks and underwear.

Some have claimed the "Christmas Miracle" campaign is just a cynical marketing stunt.
But WestJet spokesman Richard Bartrem defended the project"This year, we wanted to turn our holiday campaign into a tradition by doing something that’s never been done before," he said. "We wanted to surprise our guests with meaningfulpersonalized gifts when they least expected them," he told Fox News. "Being able to show our guests how much we care with gift-giving, a tried and true holiday tradition, resonates with WestJetters as much as our guests," he added. Airline bosses also promised to donate flights to families in need through the Ronald McDonald House Charities if 200,000 people watched the video. So far, the clip has been seen more than 6 million times.

Worcestershire pub offers overnight camping to boozy customers

Boozy regulars at an accommodating country pub can now sleep off their hangovers in a pop-up ‘drunk tank’.

Worse for wear drinkers at the Drum and Monkey in Upton-upon-Severn, Worcestershire, can stumble into the beer garden where eight large tents have been erected. There is enough space to sleep up to 19 bleary-eyed punters on the mini campsite, where customers can take advantage of luxury sleeping bags, foam mattresses and toilet facilities.

Landlady Lizzie Jennings, 54, came up with the idea along with tent maker Daniel Walton, 37, to stop punters from driving home after a few too many over the Christmas period. ‘We want people to come and have a good night and this way they can stop for an extra glass of wine if they want to,’ Ms Jennings explained. ‘We are cut off a little bit from public transport here so we hope this can deter people from getting in their cars after a few too many and keep themselves and others from harm.’

In the morning customers can even get a bacon sandwich and a cup of tea to sober them up before they are sent on their way. Punter Craig Walker, 30, added: ‘It’s like going camping with your mates except you don’t have as far to stumble back to your tent in the dark after you’ve had a few – it’s brilliant.’ Customers can stay at the pub for free between December 3 and January 1.

A group of volunteers in Texas have constructed the world’s largest gingerbread house – big enough to accommodate a family of five. The 22-foot house set a Guinness World Record in the town of Bryan on Saturday, with the help of thousands of pounds of sugar and flour, almost a ton of butter and 7,200 eggs. The tasty house also features 22,304 pieces of hard candy and packs in a total of 36million calories.

Members of the A&M Texas Traditions Club built the house to raise funds for the trauma programme at nearby St Joseph Hospital. Bill Horton, general manager of the Traditions Club, told CNN: ‘I think what impresses me most is the community spirit around the record attempt. People came together for this remarkable cause and really worked hard at it.’

In its first week of opening, the tourist attraction raised $150,000 and it receives around 600 visitors a day. The gingerbread house is open to the public until December 14.

A legendás meccs 60. évfordulójára: 6-3, ahogy az angolok látják https://www.5percangol.hu/news_of_the_world/6-3-ahogy-az-angolok-latjak/ Mon, 25 Nov 2013 13:07:46 +0000 https://cmsteszt.5percangol.hu/6-3-ahogy-az-angolok-latjak/ Hungary’s football masterclass

On 25 November 1953 Hungary played England at Wembley and, although they were Olympic champions and undefeated in three years, no one gave them a chance. This was, after all, an England side that had never lost on home soil to an overseas team. Walter Winterbottom’s side were made up of players with world-wide reputations, like Stanley Matthews, Billy Wright and Stan Mortensen. The Hungarians, on the other hand, were unknown in England. As Wright pointed out to Mortensen as they took to the field that day, the Hungarians did not even have the proper kit. But the pre-match ball juggling of captain Ferenc Puskas – a sight fans and players had never seen before in this country – was an indication of what was to come. England were not merely beaten, but absolutely outclassed.

The visitors brought a new vision of the game to Wembley. Their 4-2-4 system was based on first-time passing by players who ran hardest when they were nowhere near the ball. Hungary waltzed to a 6-3 victory, with Puskas scoring two goals. The defeat caused a complete re-think of the English game and had a lasting effect on all those who witnessed it.

One face in the crowd on that grey November afternoon was a young Sir Bobby Robson. "We saw a style of play, a system of play that we had never seen before," Robson told BBC One’s Football Focus. "None of these players meant anything to us. We didn’t know about Puskas. All these fantastic players, they were men from Mars as far as we were concerned. They were coming to England, England had never been beaten at Wembley – this would be a 3-0, 4-0 maybe even 5-0 demolition of a small country who were just coming into European football. They called Puskas the ‘Galloping Major‘ because he was in the army – how could this guy serving for the Hungarian army come to Wembley and rifle us to defeat? But the way they played, their technical brilliance and expertise – our WM formation was kyboshed in 90 minutes of football. The game had a profound effect, not just on myself but on all of us."

The defeat started a revolution in English football. After 90 years of supremacy, England had been forced to concede that another country could play the game better than they could. Over the next few years Winterbottom, who was also director of coaching for the Football Association, slowly introduced what he had learned from the Hungarians into English football. The face of the game in this country developed into the 4-4-2 formation used by teams all over the world today. "That one game alone changed our thinking," says Robson. "We thought we would demolish this team – England at Wembley, we are the masters, they are the pupils. It was absolutely the other way."

‘Mum thinks I’m a pillock’: Teenager went for drunken night out in Oldham… and woke up in a toilet in PARIS

A teenager who went out clubbing in Manchester with his mates woke up in Paris the following morning after booking a flight in the early hours. Luke Harding was getting a cab home from the Tokyo Project nightclub, nicknamed Tokes, in Oldham when he found his passport in his pocket and drunkenly decided to visit the Eiffel Tower.

Mr Harding, a sheet metal worker, asked the shocked taxi driver to head immediately for Manchester Airport then booked a last minute 6am flight for £100 through Flybe to the French capital using his mobile phone. The 19-year-old eventually woke up in a toilet cubicle at Charles De Gaulle Airport – 500 miles (800 km) from where he started his night to remember.

Pals nursing a giant hangover from a night out at the club were stunned to see a sheepish Luke had tweeted a picture of himself standing next to the Eiffel Tower and then another with the caption: ‘Sat outside the Arc De Triumph (sic) eating a croissant.’ News of his unexpected excursion spread like wildfire around the social media site with many messages poking fun at the travelling teenager.

In a series of tweets from Paris, Luke said: ‘Only woke up in the toilets of Charles de Gaulle airport an hour ago and half of Oldham know haha.’ He added: ‘I got in a taxi to Manchester airport and booked a flight on my phone! Don’t remember the flight. It’s f***ing expensive here though. Mum thinks I’m a pillock. Walked past the Eiffel Tower 3 times! Not a clue where I am!’

He was eventually picked up 12 hours later at Manchester by friends when he had to pay out a further £170 to get a flight back to the UK. The entire escapade cost him a total of £300.

Doner kebab ‘inventor’ Kadir Nurman dies in Berlin

The Turkish immigrant credited with inventing the doner kebab has died in Berlin aged 80. Kadir Nurman set up a stall in West Berlin in 1972, selling grilled meat and salad inside a flat bread. He had noticed the fast pace of city life and thought busy Berliners might like a meal they could carry with them. While there are other possible "doner inventors," Mr Nurman’s contribution was recognised by the Association of Turkish Doner Manufacturers in 2011.

The combination of juicy meat, sliced from a rotating skewer, with all the trimmings and optional chilli sauce, has since become a firm fast-food favourite in Germany, and elsewhere. According to the Berlin-based Association of Turkish Doner Manufacturers in Europe, there are now 16,000 doner outlets in Germany. More than 1,000 exist in Berlin to tempt peckish late-night revellers on the capital’s streets. German companies producing the meat and the machinery for grilling supply 80% of the EU market, the BBC’s Steve Evans reports from Berlin.

Mr Nurman, who emigrated to Germany in 1960, did not patent his invention, and thus did not particularly profit from the doner’s subsequent success. But in a 2011 interview with the Frankfurter Rundschau, he expressed little bitterness. He was happy that so many Turkish people were able to make a living from doners, he said, and that millions of people ate them.
