Sam went to his room and wrote ‘ Dear Jesus, I have 3 ……………….. a very good boy and would like to have a bike for Christmas.’ But he wasn’t very happy when he read it over. So he 4 ……………….. to try again and this time he wrote ‘Dear Jesus, I’m a good boy 5 ……………….. of the time and would like a bike for Christmas.’ He read it back and wasn’t happy with that one either. He tried a third version. ‘Dear Jesus, I could be a good boy if I tried hard and 6 ……………….. if I had a new bike.’ He read that one too, but he still wasn’t satisfied.
So, he decided to go out for a walk 7 ……………….. he thought about a better approach. After a short time he passed a house with a small statue of the Virgin Mary in the front garden. He crept in, stuffed the statue under his coat, hurried home and hid it under the bed. Then he wrote this letter. ‘Dear Jesus, If you want to see your 8 ……………….. again, you’d better send me a new bike.’

Winter Tyres

Do you use winter tyres? After several cold snaps in recent years, Brits have slowly woken up to snow tyres which can keep going where normal rubber gives up. 1 ………………..

Should you bother buying winter tyres? How much do they cost and, crucially, do they actually work? 2 ……………….. More accurately, they’re cold-weather tyres, designed to work in lower temperatures, on wet and dry roads, as well as giving better performance on snow and ice.

The science bit is easily explained: winter/cold-weather tyres contain more natural rubber than regular tyres, and are constructed of a softer compound. 3 ……………….. If you see a winter tyre up close, you’ll spot that the tread is different to a more conventional summer tyre. The contact patch of a winter tyre is more rugged: they’re covered in thousands of ‘sipes’ – tiny channels cut into the rubber which help displace water at a faster rate. 4 ………………..

Cold-weather rubber is becoming more relevant to more drivers for two reasons. Firstly, because our winters are getting more and more unpredictable. 5 ……………….. Secondly, you can now get yourself winter rubber in a massive range of sizes, from supermini boots right up to gargantuan 20-inch wheel compatible items like you’d find on the back of a Porsche Boxster. It’s potentially a much simpler way to keep mobile without investing in a more expensive 4×4.

6 ……………….. Shoe a BMW 5-series for winter and you’re looking at an £800 bill, and the only way is up. A set of four winter tyres and 20-inch ‘RS Spyder’ alloys for CAR’s long-termer Porsche Panamera GTS comes in at a cool £4060, including fitting. Winter peace of mind doesn’t come cheap, and yes, you do have to get four tyres: settling for just a pair for the driven wheels will do more harm than good, as this unbalances the whole vehicle.

www.carmagazine.co.uk

A. On snow, it’s these little crevices that bite into the soft stuff, giving purchase and grip.

B. First things first: ‘winter tyres’, as we’re accustomed to calling them, is actually a misleading title.

C. Countries where winter tyres are obligatory have fewer accidents in winter.

D. Sometimes they’re mild, and sometimes the country grinds to a halt under a couple of inches of the white stuff.

E. This allows them to stay supple as temperatures drop below 7 degrees C, maintaining higher grips levels on the road, in conditions where a normal tyre becomes hard and less keyed-in to the asphalt.

F. There’s the obvious financial outlay to swallow: a set of four winter tyres for a Fiesta will set you back in the region of £350.

G. Having tested several types of winter tyres, we recommend getting a set, especially in the northern region of the country.

H. The UK still has very few winter tyres in use – just 3% of tyres sold in 2011 were designed for cold weather use – but trade bodies say the uptake is increasing.

Transcript

This week on Today’s Homeowner, we’re out to find some immediate energy savings for you and your family. We’re looking to grab every dollar we can from that utility bill and put it back in your pocket where it belongs. This week we’re looking at five different areas of your home, that if you’ll spend just a little bit of time and money on these areas, you will realize some immediate energy savings. Now, we’ll be looking at the heating and cooling systems, windows and doors, insulation, water heaters, and a few tips on saving money on lighting.

Now, there are a few things that you can do that don’t cost any money at all, that can help you keep your home a little more comfortable as far as the temperature. One idea, close your curtains during those real sunny days to prevent any heat buildup inside your house. But, during the winter, open those curtains up and use that sun. Also, on your ceiling fan, make sure, during the summer, it’s counterclockwise. During the winter, it’s running just like the clock.

Now, another thing you hear about all the time, changing your furnace filter. And so many people just neglect doing that. Actually, if you’re not sure when you changed yours last, I guarantee it needs to be changed, and this is a good example. All you have to do is make sure you’re getting the same size and you want the direction arrow pointing in, because your air is pulling through the filter. And this will keep the air going through your air furnace a lot cleaner, it’ll make it more efficient and make it last a lot longer.

When it comes to managing your heating and air conditioning, the device that controls it is right here. It’s the thermostat. Want to start saving money immediately? If you’ve got one of these, change it out for a programmable thermostat. Think about it. Your house may be empty during large blocks of time during the day. You’re at work, kids are at school. Why have that HVAC system continuing to work when no one’s there?

Installing it, very easy. This cost me about 30 bucks. You can spend about $300 dollars or more for this, but 30 bucks for a basic one. I’m going to save just by putting this in here. I’m going to save up to 25% of my annual cost. I’ll pay for this within three months. And it’s as easy as just locating some wires.

George Clooney is engaged

Reports that George Clooney is to wed his girlfriend, lawyer Amal Alamuddin, have been confirmed by her law firm. "The barristers and staff of Doughty Street Chambers offer their best wishes and congratulations… on their engagement to be married," the London firm said in a statement. The 52-year-old actor and his 36-year-old fiancée have been dating since last October, according to reports. Clooney was previously married to Talia Balsam, whom he divorced in 1993. Since then, the Oscar-winning star has been seen as one of Hollywood’s most eligible bachelors.

Alamuddin was educated at Oxford and New York University and was recruited by her current firm in 2010. The British human rights lawyer has represented Wikileaks founder Julian Assange and advised United Nations former secretary-general Kofi Annan on the Syrian crisis.

A fluent French and Arabic speaker, Alamuddin is said to have spent time with the Ocean’s Eleven star in New York, Tanzania and the Seychelles. Speculation that Clooney was planning to remarry escalated over the weekend after his girlfriend was seen wearing a ring on her wedding finger at a Los Angeles restaurant. The actor has been linked to a number of women in recent years, among them model and DJ Lisa Snowdon, Italian model Elisabetta Canalis and former professional wrestler Stacy Keibler.

Mothers are the happiest people in Britain

Mothers are happier with their lives than any other group in society, a major new study of relationships shows. One of the most detailed studies of Britain’s relationships ever carried out found that even for women in unhappy relationships, being a mother was closely related to being happy with life overall. Research involving more than 5,000 people over a two year period attempted to uncover the hidden secret of a lasting relationship – as well as the hidden pitfalls.

The Open University study found that gestures, such as saying thank you or simple praise, rather than grand romantic actions, were ranked among the most powerful bonds holding Britain’s couples together. It also uncovered some unlikely hidden practices – including an apparently widespread taste for couples dancing together privately in their living rooms. Researchers said dancing could range from putting on a meaningful track, such as the first dance at a wedding, to “silly” and raucous music.

As part of the study, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, thousands of couples took part in a survey asking them to rate their satisfaction with their relationships, their partners and their lives in general. The responses uncovered a marked divide between those with children and those without as well as between men and women. While women with children were among the most likely to rate themselves as being dissatisfied with their marriage or relationship or show signs of growing estrangement from their partner, they topped the list of those voicing overall happiness with life.

Childless women emerged as the least generally happy group in society, even though they also appeared to have the most satisfying personal relationships. Meanwhile fathers emerged as slightly less happy overall than men without children. It concluded that women are far more likely than men to transfer their focus to their children after becoming a parent – often to the frustration of their husbands and partners. When asked to name the most important person in their life, well over half of mothers said their children, compared with just over a quarter of fathers. By contrast two thirds of fathers said their wife or partner was still the most important person for them, compared with just over a third of mothers.

Middle aged people consistently showed less overall happiness with their relationships either than those in the first flush of romance or older couples who had been together for decades. But, conversely, people who registered having gone through a recent adversity, such as a bereavement or unemployment, showed a higher overall attachment to their partner.

1. The study focussed on

a) why some families are happier than others.
b) how fathers related to their children.
c) what promotes bonding in a relationship.
d) differences between mothers and childless women.

2. Dancing in one’s living room seems to be

a) a favourite activity with couples.
b) a way to let off steam for couples.
c) a widespread practice.
d) one of the practices unknown so far.

3. It seems that grand romantic actions

a) are required in most relationships.
b) are less valued than simple gestures of appreciation.
c) are preferred by more women than men.
d) are important to younger couples.

4. Women with children considered

a) themselves less happy than childless women.
b) their relationships more satisfying than childless women.
c) their lives overall happier despite being less happy in their relationships.
d) childless women less happy.

5. The fathers taking part in the interview

a) turned out to be a little less happy than childless men.
b) put their children first, just like the mothers.
c) understood that mothers were more tuned to their kids.
d) never admitted being jealous.

6. It was also discovered that

a) middle aged couples were more satisfied with their lives than the young.
b) elderly people valued their partners very highly.
c) certain problems may result in stronger bonds between partners.
d) younger couples deal with problems better than the elderly.

Are children given too many toys?

I stood in the playroom holding an empty suitcase. We were emigrating and could only pack a few toys to keep us going until the rest arrived by ship months later. In went the Story Cubes – ingenious picture dice that inspire stories, drawings or full-scale theatrical productions. Both kids are "crafty", so in go pom-poms, pipe cleaners and paper punches. 1. ………………..

I subject the rest to an eligibility test before I transport them half way round the world from Switzerland to Singapore – has either child shown the slightest interest in the toy in the past month? An ancient game of Pass the Pigs passes muster. A bucket of unisex Duplo and then, after a tantrum, a second bucket of pink Duplo. 2. ……………….. But the rest has not been touched in a month – and the shelves are still packed with dolls and jigsaws and trains and kazoos and knitted muffins and the emergency vehicles of several nations and enough wooden blocks to build a bridge to Singapore.

So why do we have so many toys? 3. ……………….. "Most children need a transition object," said James, "their first teddy bear that they take everywhere. But everything else is a socially-generated want." 4. ………………..

At London’s V&A Museum of Childhood, Catherine Howell oversees a collection that includes a 400-year-old rocking horse and Buzz Lightyear. She agrees that children typically have far more toys than any previous generation. 5. ……………….. "A child always comes back to a set of bricks because it allows them to use their imagination."

Certainly, my own three-year-old is a marketer’s dream, desperate to adventure with the Octonauts (an animated series). And yet, when his much-anticipated Gup-B arrived last Christmas, his underwater enthusiasm had ebbed by Boxing Day. 6. ………………..  So while Buzz Lightyear can only ever be a space ranger, a doll might become a hungry baby, a tea party guest – or a space ranger – depending on the child’s desires. These prescriptive toys could even be damaging, says James. "Young children discover their identity through fantasy play. If their toys offer a limited repertoire, this process is eroded."

source: www.bbc.co.uk
—————————————-

A. “In my experience, most children are given toys when the parent is faced with a massive tantrum, thus rewarding naughty behaviour.”

B. But while spin-off merchandising has been a huge hit ever since Star Wars figures appeared in the 1970s, Howell says traditional toys like dolls and building blocks have retained a consistent popularity.

C. Psychologist Oliver James, author of the parenting book Love Bombing, believes children don’t "need" a vast panoply of toys.

D. According to James, toys that pre-determine play – and this is especially true of merchandising – offer limited possibilities for fun.

E. I even thought this trip would be the great opportunity to get rid of toys I detested: a few Barbies and the hideous rubber monster masks.

F. Next, a kingdom of animal figurines marches two-by-two into the case.

G. It seems we are keen to generate our children’s wants – the Toy Retailers’ Association reports that the British alone spend £3bn each year on toys.

H. At the last minute, I spot a "snakes and ladders" game that my son enjoys (provided he gets to take all the turns).

"Fire Dog" Helps Police Solve Arson Cases

A highly trained fire investigation dog sits proudly after a job well done. Nicknamed "The Fire Dog", Billy and partner Duncan Carmichael are part of K9 Response, responsible for investigating the aftermath of suspicious blazes.

Working alongside Fire Investigators and Police, the pair is tasked with identifying arson cases and ensuring that evidence is properly recovered to assist in prosecution. They also attend schools, open days and other public events to promote fire safety.

"The role Billy plays is of vital importance," says handler Duncan.

Car manufacturer Škoda UK announced last week they had supplied Billy and Duncan with a specially adapted Škoda Yeti, which includes a kennel drainage system, air conditioning and other features.

"We are proud to support Duncan and Billy the fire dog in the invaluable work that they do for their community," says Alan Barrowman, Area Fleet Manager Scotland & Northern England for Škoda UK.

"As well as being safe and reliable, this vehicle provides excellent value for money, impressive comfort for the handler and a safe environment for Billy."

Paw Me Another

This thirsty golden Labrador enjoys a little hair of the dog – by downing a new beer designed for pets. The meat-flavoured “beer” for dogs, called Barkers Brew, is now available in two flavours, chicken and beef. It is non-alcoholic and non-carbonated and contains vitamin E, which even supports the dog’s immune system. It costs £2.50 a bottle and the liquid can be added to water as well as poured over dried food to give a dog’s dinner a new flavour.

And 13-year-old golden Labrador Skip certainly appears to be a big fan of the new brew. His owner Laura Hawken said: "It’s a great way to add a bit of variety to Skip’s meals. He really enjoys the chicken flavour and always wants to finish the bottle after his dinner. After he polishes off the bottle he has a long nap – it’s as if he’s had a few real beers!"

Russ Ronat, director of R2 Pets Ltd, the company behind Barkers Brew, wanted to create a new product and treat for pets.

The 39-year-old said: "I started R2 Pets Ltd a few years ago and my goal for the company has been to create very innovative pet products. I love dogs and was thinking of new products that were also reward treats for dogs. Most dog owners want to provide a little variety to their pet’s meals and the idea of a healthy brew that can be added to any meal made sense. Our nutritionist in Yorkshire has a few dogs and they are all big fans of the brew – the response from friends and customers has been fantastic. The beer adds a healthy variety to your dog’s meal, the brew has a screw top so is easy to add the brew and and then refrigerate."

Russ, from Orlando, Florida, US, who has had a poodle, a boxer, and a Newfoundland, feels the beer will add excitement to dog’s lives.

He added: "Barkers Brew adds some excitement to your dog’s day; it’s a new tasty addition to its food. It makes mealtimes much more appealing and entices even the fussiest of eaters."

Olympics opening ceremony to feature English countryside with farm animals

Danny Boyle has revealed details about the London 2012 Olympics’ opening ceremony, which is to take a ‘Glastonbury meets the last night of the Proms’ theme – and feature farmyard animals. Work has begun on installation of the set for the opening scene of the ceremony, which is to be called ‘Green and Pleasant’. The Olympic stadium will be transformed into a British countryside environment, with scenes of picnics being staged by 10,000 volunteers in front of a landmark-laden backdrop that includes the Glastonbury Tor.

Up to 30 sheep, 12 horses, 10 chickens, 10 ducks, nine geese, three cows, three sheepdogs and two goats will also feature in the show along with music by British dance act Underworld. Serving as artistic director for the London 2012 opening ceremony, Boyle is best known for directing award-winning films such as Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours and Trainspotting.  He said the ceremony will be ‘elusive’, a ‘puzzle’ and that it will create ‘a picture of ourselves as a nation’.

Boyle has created roles for NHS nurses in the spectacle, saying: ‘The best way to tell that story is through working with real people. I’ve been astounded by the selfless dedication of the volunteers, they are the pure embodiment of the Olympic spirit and represent the best of who we are as a nation.’ Europe’s largest bell will also be rung in the stadium to open a Shakespeare-inspired segment which will feature 900 children.
