It’s mob rule! Video of two kangaroos boxing in the street goes viral – alpha males control street corners

Just over 100km north of Sydney’s central business district, the quiet township has a population of 500 people and 200 kangaroos, with the marsupials growing faster than the humans. But the residents of tiny Wyee Point did not think anything of their kangaroo mobs or regular evening encounters with the marsupials until a video of two 1.4m tall male kangaroos in a ‘boxing fight’ in one of their streets went viral this week.

Shot on his phone by local father of five, Rod Langham, the five minute video of a rogue buck and the resident Alpha male of Watanga Crescent, Wyee Point punching and kicking each other while balancing on their tails has attracted 1.5 million views on YouTube. ‘We’re so used to kangaroos around in the streets, but the fighting only happens once a year, in Spring, so I thought I’m going to get a video of this,’ he said. Mr Langham filmed the kangaroos for five minutes and 19 seconds until his phone ran out of memory. Then the punching and kickboxing continued for another fifteen minutes until the two kangaroos broke and the rogue male hopped away.

And now that images of Mr Langham’s neighbourhood have gone around the world, the 54-year-old sheet metal worker is becoming a media personality. Mr Langham, who a week ago didn’t really know what YouTube was, is being interviewed by foreign TV crews fascinated with the footage of the two buck roos boxing in a classic mating season fight for domination right outside his front door.

The force is strong in Cheltenham: UK’s first Jedi school opens

~~A long time ago~~ Once a week in ~~a galaxy far, far away~~ Gloucester, Star Wars enthusiasts are meeting up to learn how to fight like Jedi Knights.

LudoSport, which describes itself as a Light Saber Combat Academy, has opened its first school in the UK and is teaching fans of the sci-fi series how to wield the signature weapon of the Jedi order and their Sith counterparts. Padawans – or ‘students’ to us Earthlings – use a specially-designed sword with a weightless blade to mimic the lightsaber, which unfortunately doesn’t exist.

The Italy-based company has been operating for eight years and has now had the opportunity to expand after British musician and martial arts enthusiast Jordan Court trained as an instructor. ‘I know people who do fencing and other similar sports and I thought there had to be a group that did lightsaber sport,’ said Mr (Master?) Court, 34. ‘I had been looking for a group like that for a couple of years. That’s how I came across LudoSport.’

Though many of the participants are Star Wars fans, Mr Court stressed that it’s a form of combat non-fans can enjoy too and he’s looking for it to be taken seriously as a sport. Classes are being held at St Luke’s Church Hall in Cheltenham every Tuesday between 7pm and 11pm.

Emmy Awards: Sherlock and Breaking Bad win big

BBC One drama Sherlock has won a hat-trick of awards at the US Primetime Emmys in Los Angeles.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman won best actor and best supporting actor in a mini-series, although neither was at the ceremony. Steven Moffat also won best writing in a mini-series for the final episode of Sherlock’s third season.

Drug drama Breaking Bad was the biggest winner on the night, scooping five awards including best drama series. It was the second consecutive year that the show, which ended last September after five seasons, had picked up the ceremony’s highest honour.

Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston was named best actor in a drama series for a fourth time as the teacher-turned-drug kingpin Walter White. He beat a host of Hollywood heavyweights including Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson for their roles in the acclaimed crime drama True Detective. His co-stars Aaron Paul and Anna Gunn were also honoured for best supporting actor and supporting actress in a drama series.

In other categories, The Good Wife star Julianna Margulies won the Emmy for best lead actress in a drama series for her part as lawyer Alicia Florrick. There were also best actress and best supporting actress in a mini-series awards for Oscar winners Jessica Lange and Kathy Bates for their roles in American Horror Story: Coven.

Although there was a considerable amount of British talent up for awards, success only came from Sherlock‘s triple win and a best director award for Colin Bucksey for Fargo. ITV drama Downton Abbey walked away empty-handed despite nominations for its stars Michelle Dockery, Dame Maggie Smith, Joanne Froggart and Jim Carter.

Sitcom Modern Family was named best comedy series for a fifth consecutive year, equalling the record set by 1990s show Frasier for most comedy wins. Ty Burrell also walked away with best supporting actor in a comedy for his role on the show. The Big Bang Theory‘s Jim Parsons won best actor in a comedy series. Julia Louis-Dreyfus won her third consecutive Emmy for playing foul-mouthed US Vice President Selina Meyer in political satire Veep.

The ceremony also paid tribute to industry members who died in the past year. They included James Garner, Ruby Dee, Sid Caesar, Carmen Zapata and Elaine Stritch. It concluded with a special homage to Robin Williams by long-time friend Billy Crystal, who remembered the actor as "the brightest star in a comedy galaxy".

Taiwan gas explosion: Dramatic pictures show devastation after huge blasts kill 22 and injure 270

A series of gas explosions in Taiwan has left 22 people dead and 270 injured. Huge balls of flame erupted from the street, flying 15 storeys into the air and destroying buildings and cars in the south-western city of Kaohsiung last night. 22 people have already been confirmed dead, but the death toll is expected to rise sharply.

Smoke with a "gas-like smell" was seen coming out of drains shortly before the disaster, local media reported, and the city’s fire department said the blast had been caused by a gas leak. Photographs showed a scene of devastation last night, including the body of a dead or injured child on the ground among the rubble.

Rescuers formed a chain to pull the injured from a deep crater in the road. After light broke this morning, residents found whole streets ripped up, with mangled and charred vehicles thrown on the roofs.

The media said some residents described it as having felt like the area was hit by a powerful earthquake. The Kaohsiung government has set up an emergency centre, with a plan to send soldiers in to coordinate the rescue operation, the media said.

Mosquito bite victim

Helge Zieler has a job that really sucks – letting himself get bitten by mosquitoes. Working in the Brazilian rainforest, he offered himself as bait so he could study the bugs’ behaviour. But despite once suffering a really bad bout of malaria, he says: “The beauty of the rainforest far outweighs the thousands of mosquito bites.”

Sewer diver

We all think our job stinks from time to time, but it really does for Julio Cu Camara. He swims through sewers in Mexico City to clear blockages and repair pipes by hand. Julio, has notched up 1,400 dives in 30 years – each one lasting up to six hours in 7,500 miles (12,070 km) of tunnels. He has to wear a 40 kg helmet and suit to protect him from the human, chemical and animal waste – and its stench.

Julio has found horses, pigs, guns and “cigarette butts to car parts, furniture and fridges. You ask how it got there.” But of one thing he is certain: “The worst thing of all to find is a human.”

Watching grass grow

The grass expert works at British Seed Houses in Lincoln, where her daily duties include counting out and planting 400 seed samples. Later, she goes through them blade by blade to monitor growth. Helen said: “People think that it’s strange when I tell them my job is to watch grass grow. But it’s fascinating. I wouldn’t do anything else. It’s so rewarding to see a stretch of perfect grass.”

Whale snot collector

“There she blows” may be the traditional cry for whale spotters but marine biologist Karina Acevedo-Whitehouse gives it a new meaning. She flies a remote-controlled helicopter fitted with a culture dish through the spray of mucus whales eject from their blowhole, then analyses it for viruses and bacteria. Karina, from the Zoological Society of London, says: “It can be quite dangerous.”

Prince Harry has split from his girlfriend Cressida Bonas, a source close to the couple has said. The royal, 29, had been dating the 25-year-old for two years, with speculation growing in recent months that the pair would marry. ‘It’s very, very sad that they have decided to split. It’s very amicable but they have decided to go their separate ways,’ the source said.

It is believed the couple may have split to enable Cressida to focus on her career, while she is also thought to have been uncomfortable with the attention resulting from dating a member of the royal family. The source said the pair were still ‘the best of friends’. Prince Harry’s cousin and Cressida’s friend Princess Eugenia introduced the pair, who started dating in May 2012. They made their first official public appearance together earlier this year.

Terror at 12,500ft: a skydiver plummets to the ground unconscious after being knocked out by another jumper in freak accident

Experienced skydiver James Lee, 25, was hit from behind by another skydiver and knocked out, just after he jumped at the Skydive ground in Netheravon, Wiltshire. He was saved from certain death by two other skydivers who, having seen what had happened, postponed pulling their own cords and instead dived towards Mr Lee, grabbing hold of him and deploying his parachute. Mr Lee only regained consciousness as he drifted safely down to the ground, where he landed safely and with no memory of what had happened.

He said: ‘I’ve been skydiving for five years and this was my 1,050th jump. There were 12 people in this skydive, with others leaving the plane just after we jumped off. One of the skydivers who left the plane through the door came out unstable and went into a spin. They were falling faster than I was and their shin impacted the back of my helmet with a lot of force, knocking me out.’

It wasn’t until Mr Lee was under the canopy that he began to regain consciousness, and he landed safely on the ground with no memory of the drama that had unfolded seconds earlier. He was taken to hospital where he was treated for an injury to his head, and then given the all-clear and discharged. Now he says the accident, which happened last July, ‘has not put me off at all.’ Mr Lee added: ‘I am very glad that everything unfolded how it did. This is not something you are taught to do or practise for as it is very uncommon. I think my mum and girlfriend are more relieved than I am.’

As if to further cement his status as a technology expert, he tells his interviewer: ‘I am putting my screwdriver everywhere and seeing what is happening.’ And as for his career ambitions, he says: ‘Sir, I will have a fruity career in your steamy company. I will perform and reach the climax position.’ But Rakesh also has a pretty impressive work-life balance, telling his prospective employer: ‘In my spare time, I chat to girls on Facebook and collect (Indian sweet) pan masala wrappers.’

Niagara Falls frozen in time as Arctic chill blankets US

Clad with cameras and visitor maps, tourists were gifted with a wholly spectacular sight when they turned up at Niagara Falls this week. The Polar Vortex has unfurled record low glacial temperatures on much of the US leaving one of its most esteemed attractions giving a scintillating snow show.

Water – or in this case icicles – plunges 170ft (52 m) to the ground at Niagara Falls, where three waterfalls straddle the American-Canadian border. This week, pictured from Canada looking at the US side of the falls, it has literally frozen it in time. The polar vortex which affected large parts of the US is expected to calm off this weekend.
