We usually think that we are completely different from ancient people. Weird traditions, unknown languages, and so on. But archaeology shows that we’re quite wrong.

Here is a list of interesting facts about the life of ancient Egyptians. You’ll probably learn something new.

1. They extracted iron from meteorites.

Archaeologists found metal beads in an ancient tomb. These beads were unique because the Egyptians started to smelt iron only 2,000 years later. So how did they get metal beads? The answer is hidden in one hieroglyph that means iron and can be translated as “metal from the sky.” The beads were probably made of meteorite material.

2. They invented toothpaste.

There are several proofs that the Egyptians have been producing toothpaste since 5000 BC. They used to produce powder consisting of various ingredients available to them (burned eggshells and pumice). But nowadays we don’t know the exact way to use such paste. We can only guess.

3. They used antibiotics in treatment.

Though antibiotics were officially invented in the 20th century, the doctors of ancient Egypt used moldy flatbread to cure festering wounds. And such medication worked well.

4. They formed the world’s first police.

The world’s first police force was formed during the Middle Kingdom period (years 2050-1800 BC). It included the most loyal warriors and foreign mercenaries. The Egyptian police were accompanied by dogs and monkeys. Officers protected temples and city squares, upper-class representatives, and caravans from criminals. They were just like modern policemen (but with monkeys).

5. They were the first to produce beer 

Most of us know that the workers who built the pyramids were paid with 4-5 liters of beer a day. So we can conclude that brewing was at a really good level. The Egyptians were one of the first to produce this drink.

6. Surgeons performed very difficult operations.

The ancient Egyptians possessed accurate and unique medicinal knowledge that could be compared to modern practices. Scientists who examined mummies found traces of some challenging operations: heart bypass surgeries, organ transplantation, and even plastic surgeries. Unfortunately, their knowledge has been lost, and we can’t say what ancient doctors would be able to do now.

7. They used door locks.

Door locks were created in Egypt and China, probably because such devices were needed. The more people who lived nearby, the more reasons neighbors found to lock their door. Egyptian wooden locks had a simple mechanism.

8. They bowled.

In one ancient settlement near Cairo, a playroom going back to 3200 BC with carved lanes and balls of various sizes with holes for fingers was found. The rules differed, but the game was still recognizable.

9. They treated eyes.

Eye infection was a common disease among the Egyptians. They used various (and sometimes strange) methods of treatment: sometimes they used bactericidal paint and remedies made of…human brains.

A bubble wrap-lined room seems like the sort of idea that would come about after people everywhere had become obsessed with the satisfying sensation of popping the bubbles that keep our fragile items safe in transit. And yet, wallpaper was actually the original intent behind engineer Al Fielding and Swiss inventor Marc Chavannes’ invention. Turns out, the market for textured wallpaper was not what they had hoped, and the pair struggled to find an alternate angle. Despite some viability, the plan to pitch the material as an insulator for greenhouses didn’t pan out either. Then, in 1959, IBM had announced their new 1401 variable word length computer, and Fielding and Chavannes had an idea. They pitched bubble wrap as a packaging material for the fragile new technologies, and IBM agreed to give it a try. From there, bubble wrap found new purpose and people were left wishing they had whole rooms lined with the stuff. Probably.

2. KLEENEX

The public was slow to come around on the idea of disposable, publicly marketed sanitary pads that Kimberly-Clark, the producer had a great supply of. While they waited for the tides to turn, Kimberly-Clark found another use for its supply of creped wadding. Scientists created the super thin, soft tissues we know today before they even knew what it would be used for. Initially, marketers promoted it as a replacement for “cold cream towels,” which were used to apply skincare serums. Ads focusing on the cosmetic value—calling it “the new secret of keeping a pretty skin as used by famous movie stars”—sold Kleenex from its inception in 1924 until nose-needs were introduced into the marketing campaign in 1930.

3. VIAGRA

Viagra, or Sildenafil, as it’s officially known, was originally conceived as a treatment for hypertension, angina, and other symptoms of heart disease. But Phase I clinical trials revealed that while the drug wasn’t great at treating what it was supposed to treat, male test subjects were experiencing a rather unexpected side effect: erections. A few years later, in 1998, the drug took U.S. markets by storm as a treatment for penile dysfunction and became an overnight success. It now rakes in an estimated $1.9 billion a year.

4. BRANDY

Brandy, that delightful, caramel-colored after dinner drink, started off as a byproduct of transporting wine. About 900 years ago, merchants would essentially boil the water off of large quantities of wine in order to both transport it more easily, and save on customs taxes, which were levied by volume. After a while, a few of these merchants, bored perhaps after a long day on the road, dipped into their inventory and discovered that the concentrated, or distilled, wine actually tasted pretty darn good. Voila! Brandy was born.

5. COCA-COLA

Coca-Cola, one of the world’s most famous brand names, was originally invented as an alternative to morphine addiction, and to treat headaches and relieve anxiety. Coke’s inventor, John Pemberton—a Confederate veteran of the Civil War who himself suffered from a morphine addiction—first invented a sweet, alcoholic drink infused with coca leaves for an extra kick. He called it Pemberton’s French Wine Coca. It would be another two decades before that recipe was honed, sweetened, carbonated and, eventually, marketed into what it is today: the most popular soda in the world.

6. PLAY-DOH

Play-Doh, that strange, brightly colored, salty clay that all of us grew up molding and poking (and, occasionally, nibbling), was first invented in the 1930s by a soap manufacturer named Cleo McVickers, who thought he’d hit upon a fantastic wallpaper cleaner. You’ve heard the expression “the greatest thing since sliced bread.” But what makes sliced bread so special? To understand the importance of the humble bread slicer, we have to travel back to 1927 when the first bread slicer was created by amateur inventor Otto Rohwedder. After hearing families complain about the amount of time they spent slicing bread Rohwedder designed a machine that would do the job for them.

At the time most bakers refused to slice bread in advance because it would go stale. Rohwedder’s machine not only cut bread into perfectly even slices but wrapped them in wax paper to preserve freshness.

The first loaf of machine sliced bread was sold in 1928. According to Priceonomics just five years later, 80% of commercially sold bread in America was sliced. To homemakers, sliced bread was more than a small convenience.

In a New York Times editorial, one woman wrote: For [family] lunches I must cut by hand at least twenty slices, for two sandwiches apiece. I should like to let you know how important sliced bread is to the morale and saneness of a household. If Shubham Banerjee cannot lay claim to being the world’s youngest venture capital-backed entrepreneur, he comes very close. Banerjee was 12 years old when he closed an early-stage funding round with Intel last month for his prototype for a low-cost Braille printer. Since then, the San Jose, California middle-schooler has turned 13.

After reading a fundraising flyer about the blind, Banerjee felt inspired to turn a high-tech version of Legos, the toy building blocks, into a device that could print in Braille. One day, he wants to mass-produce the printers and sell them for about $350, far less than Braille printers cost now.

This past summer, he worked on incorporating an Intel Edison chip, a processor aimed at hobbyists, into the printer. In September, Intel invited him to a conference in India to highlight uses for Edison. 

There, he got a big surprise. Intel executive Mike Bell announced from the conference stage that the giant chipmaker would invest in his company, Braigo Labs. Until then, his funding consisted of the $35,000 his parents gave him. He plans to use it to build a better prototype of the printer and test it with more groups for the blind.

Banerjee says he gets mostly As and Bs as a student at the Champion School in San Jose, California. Teachers have given him time off to attend events like the conference in India and the Intel Global Capital summit this week in Huntington Beach, California. He catches up on school work on weekends, he says. While many young entrepreneurs who win venture-capital cash end up ditching their education to focus on their businesses full time, Banerjee says he won’t take that path. ‘It’s an after-school thing,’ he says.

Today’s Inventoon is the telephone! Before the telephone the only way to send a message over a distance was to send it by mail or by telegraph. The telegraph was a machine that sent little electrical pulses to a wire to another machine on the other side. People sent these pulses in a special language called Morse code. Then, one day in 1876 Alexander Graham Bell was experimenting with the telegraph. Mr Bell figured out than human voices could be turned into an electrical signal and sent through a wire, just like the telegraph pulses. Mr Bell’s first words into the new telephone were to his assistant, and he said: “Watson, come here. I need you!”.”Hello, this is Watson. I’m not here right now. You can leave a message, right after the beep.”

In 1964, Bell created the Picturephone in the hopes of augmenting telephone services with long-distance video chat. The technology was awesome (for the time), but also insanely expensive. It flopped, costing Bell roughly half a billion dollars and attracting few actual customers. But how did it work, and why did it fail?

Commercial service started on June 25, 1964 at calling booths in New York City, Washington, D.C. and Chicago. Interest was lukewarm, at best. For starters, customers needed to schedule their allotted 15 minutes of screen time in advance, which made video chatting nearly as tedious as a doctor’s appointment. Only three cities had access to the futuristic telephone, so its reach was pretty limited. Plus, it was also incredibly expensive. A 3-minute video call from New York to Washington, D.C. cost $16, or the equivalent of about $120 today.

The Picturephone had a video camera, screen, a push-button phone, speakers and a power supply. It even let users control whether the video feed was transmitted to the person they were calling. The sound and quality were good, and people generally liked seeing the person they were speaking to.

The following year, AT&T slashed prices almost 50 percent to encourage customers to make videophone calls. When that strategy failed, the company relocated the video booths to Bell-owned buildings. That didn’t help either. Finally in 1968, the company pulled up the white flag and admitted customers weren’t interested.

But is there any room for clothes? Eccentric inventor builds his own electric suitcase on wheels

Dragging your suitcase through the airport or train station could become a thing of the past thanks to this new invention. Amateur inventor He Liangcai has created an electric suitcase, which not only transports your belongings, but allows the owner to sit on it and travel along at up to 19 km per hour. The reinforced suitcase, which weighs 6.8 kg, comes with a small battery and is able to carry two adults for a distance of up to 60 km on a full charge.

The piece of luggage consists of an electric scooter, which has a suitcase attached to it. The rider sits on top of the suitcase to reach over to the handlebars where the throttle, brakes and lights can be found. Mr He demonstrated how the baggage worked by riding on one of his suitcases from his home to Changsha train station in China’s central Hunan Province, around 11 kilometres away.

According to the Global Times, it took the inventor 10 years to develop the scooter, despite the fact he is a farmer by trade with little formal education. In 1999, he designed a car safety system, which earned him an award in the U.S. And when he forgot his luggage when travelling to America to collect the accolade, he came up with the idea for the suitcase.
