Woman who drinks 100 coffees a day says it’s GOOD for you

You might think you need a lot of coffee to get you through the day – but it’s probably nothing compared to Helene Marsot, who drinks up to 100 cups a DAY. A taste tester for Dunkin’ Brands’ coffee, Helene is responsible for overseeing the quality of the drinks the company produces and sells.

During a standard week, the quality assurance manager estimates she gets through hundreds of different coffees on trips around the world. She said: “As a coffee quality assurance expert I will say that a good cup of coffee is a clean and uniform coffee with acidity, body, sweetness and mouthfeel in proper proportion. With coffee, there are so many variables that can impact the flavour.”

Even though she may not finish every cup, she insists the amount of coffee she drinks actually has a positive effect on her health. Helene, based in Canton, Massachusetts, USA, has been working in her current role since 2005 – sampling tens of thousands of cups of coffee in the past nine years.

As well as her own tasting, Helene oversees Dunkin’s coffee lab testers based both in the U.S. and in countries the drink is produced. She added: “It starts from the tree and finishes in the cup, but there are more than 100 steps in between – coffee is full of surprises and experiences.”

Each year, Dunkin’ Donuts sells more than 1.8 billion cups of hot and iced coffee globally. And on their website the brand claims some of their coffee tasters test up to 600 cups each day. Helene said: “I like that you can adjust any coffee to your taste and your mood: from a dark roast to a light roast, a drip brew, an espresso or a French press. You can also adjust the flavour with cream or no cream, sugar or no sugar, and by serving it hot or iced.”

Number 10. The most expensive kind comes from dung. Elephant dung, to be specific. The digestion process breaks down the proteins in the beans, resulting in what’s said to be a far superior cup. At 50 dollars a serving, it should be.

Number 9. It can power a truck. A man in the UK used bean waste and a special converter to get his vehicle to go over 60 miles an hour (96 km per hour) and set a new Guinness World Record.

Let’s see 10 fascinating facts about this irresistible drink.

Coffee dates back to 800 A.D.

Legend has it that goat herders noticed the effect caffeine had on their goats after seeing them eat coffee cherries. After their coffee cherry meal, the goats had a lot of energy and they didn’t sleep at night. The herders shared their experience about the goats with local monks. When the monks made a drink from coffee beans, they realized they could stay up all night and pray and found the effect beneficial.

Coffee beans are actually seeds

Coffee beans grow on a bush. They’re the pits of the cherry-like berries found on the flowering shrubs, but they are called beans because they resemble legumes. Coffee cherries or coffee berries, most commonly contain two stones with their flat sides together. There are two main varieties of beans: green and red. Red beans have a nicer smell and are less acidic. They are used to produce lighter coffees. The longer coffee beans are roasted, the healthier they are. Decaffeinated coffee comes from a chemical process where the caffeine is taken out of the beans. After coffee beans are decaffeinated, several coffee manufacturers sell the caffeine to soda and pharmaceutical companies such as Coca-Cola, a major buyer.

Coffee wasn’t always a liquid

According to a number of historians, coffee was first consumed by grinding the berries together. Some animal fat was added, and the caffeinated treats were rolled into tiny edible energy balls. “Kopi Luwak” is the most expensive coffee in the world. It comes from Indonesia and is made from beans undigested by the Asian palm civet. In other words, it comes from cat poop. The cat-like creature eats fruit including coffee cherries but is unable to digest the beans. The excreted seeds produce a smooth, less acidic brew and sell for €350 and up per kilo!

Coffee was banned more than once

In 1511, leaders in Mecca believed that coffee stimulated radical thinking and idleness, and outlawed the drink. Some 16th-century Italian clergymen also tried to ban coffee because they believed it to be satanic. However, Pope Clement VII loved coffee so much that he lifted the ban and had coffee baptized in 1600. In the 18th century, the Swedish government made both coffee and coffee paraphernalia (including cups and dishes) illegal because they supposed they had a connection with a rebellious sentiment.

Coffee is consumed in such great quantities, it is the world’s 2nd largest traded commodity, surpassed only by crude oil. It is the most beloved beverage after water. Dead mouse ‘found in McDonald’s coffee’

McDonald’s customers might expect a free toy with their happy meal or a free cheeseburger if they buy a large meal and show a student card. But one man says that when he finished his coffee he certainly wasn’t expecting what he found at the bottom of the cup: a dead mouse.

Ron Morais, from Fredericton, Canada, claims he’d already drunk nearly all his black coffee when he made the gruesome discovery. ‘I always take the lid off to get my last sip of coffee. And when I took the lid off, there was a little bit of a surprise in my coffee cup. It was a dead mouse.’

Mr Morais’s co-workers said they wouldn’t have believed him had they not seen the mouse for themselves. ‘Unless I had been there and seen Ron drink all that coffee down to the last drop, I would have been, like, ‘You’re lying’,’ admitted colleague Brad Patterson.

McDonald’s began an investigation but said there was so far ‘no evidence of pests’ at the branch. ‘We are continuing to investigate this isolated incident and have reached out to the customer to get the product sample,’ it said in a statement.

Despite admitting to ‘a little queasiness’ at the time, Mr Morais remained upbeat about the incident. ‘I’m in better shape than the mouse,’ he said.

The production of coffee

Do you know how coffee is made? In this section we’ll read about the way coffee beans become a cup of nice, hot beverage. Coffee is made from the seeds of the coffee plant, which are called coffee beans. After the coffee beans are picked from the coffee plant, they are going through the production process. The different phases of the coffee production process are the followings:

Aging
Some sorts of coffee taste better if the beans are “aged”. This means that after they are picked, the beans are kept from three to eight years. This “aging” gives the coffee a less acidic taste. Coffee that has been aged is often mixed or “blended” with other coffee that is not aged.

Roasting
“Roasting” is one of the most important stages in making coffee beans into coffee. When a coffee bean is roasted, it grows nearly two times bigger and changes from green to yellow to brown. The length of time that the coffee beans are roasted makes the coffee taste different. Some types of coffee, such as Mocha and Java, are roasted for a short time.

Grinding
Before the coffee is made into a drink, it is “ground” in a small grinding machine called a “coffee mill”. The coffee mill breaks the beans into very small pieces. Coffee is turned into a drink in several different ways. For some ways of making coffee, such as “espresso” it is best to have the coffee ground into fine powder, but for other types of coffee-making, such as “filtered coffee”, the coffee is in larger pieces to stop it going through the filter. Finely ground coffee makes a stronger taste.

Brewing
Coffee is made into a drink by putting the coffee into boiling water. This is called “brewing” coffee. There are many ways to brew coffee.
