Scariest commute in the world? Mountain-top villagers use rickety cable car to get to work

Villagers use this cable car to carry everything – from people to supplies – across a one-kilometre distance on a daily basis. It may look like they are dicing with death, but it is actually a lifeline for Chinese villagers who say that without it it would add an extra day to their journey every time they left their mountaintop village.

People have been living in the village of Yushan in Hefeng county, in China’s Hubei province, for hundreds of years, able to exploit the fertile soil and the safety provided by their mountaintop location. They rarely needed to access the outside world for anything other than buying tools or other supplies, and kept to themselves.

But that changed with the arrival of the modern world where children were told they had to go to school – and all sorts of items needed to become part of village life, including televisions, mobile phones and computers. Some people in the village simply wanted to work in jobs outside – but that was impossible as it took a day to trek down into the valley and up the other side over a narrow and dangerous pathway.

Their haven was saved when a local inspired by Alpine cable cars came up with the idea of building their own. Village elder Xiong Sun, 79, said: “Our lift of which we are enormously proud and which has been running without problems for almost two decades means that life can go on as it would in any normal village despite the fact that Yushan is located where normally only eagles would be prepared to make their homes.”

They managed to buy second-hand cable from a ski resort in Europe and connected it to their home-made cable car. The journey takes just a few minutes, meaning the kids can get to school and people can get to work.

Restaurant owner jailed for serving OPIUM-laced noodles to keep customers coming back

A noodle bar owner in China was jailed after he admitted lacing his trademark dish with opium in an attempt to keep customers coming back for more. Police said the restaurant owner admitted to officers that he had been grinding poppy buds into his food. He owned up after one of his regular customers tested positive for the drug during a routine traffic stop earlier this month.

Customer Liu Juyou, 26, was baffled when he tested positive for opium, which is processed chemically to make the deadly and highly-addictive drug, heroin. But he managed to prove his innocence by convincing family members to eat at the Yan’an restaurant in Shaanxi province and then have themselves tested.

Zhang admitted buying 2 kg of poppy buds for $100 (£61) in August to crush into the noodle dish to “make it taste better and to improve his business”. Although the quantity in the noodles was not enough to be habit-forming – meaning Zhang’s plan backfired – it is enough to show up in drug tests.

The chef was jailed for 10 days, while Mr Joyou had to spend 15 days behind bars after police dismissed his appeal, saying their priority was to detect drugs.

China has a history of adding poppy powder to dishes, though it has been banned for some time.

Chinese billionaire gives away entire fortune to charity, leaving his family nothing

A property mogul has decided to donate his entire £1.2 billion pound fortune to charity, leaving his wife and kids with nothing.

Self-made billionaire Yu Pengnian began his working life as a penniless rickshaw driver but at the age of 88, is one of the richest people in mainland China. You’d imagine that someone who had built such a fortune from nothing, would want to share their wealth with their family but in the case of Pengnian, you’d be wrong. Seeing as his family might be a little upset by the news, you might think he’d break it to them gently and quietly.

However, Pengnian chose to hold a press conference to make the startling announcement that they will get absolutely nothing. Instead his vast fortune will be given to a foundation he established five years ago to provide aid to his favourite causes including student scholarships, reconstruction work following the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, and operations for those, like him, who suffer from cataracts.

Luckily for the eccentric philanthropist, who lives in the five star Panglin Hotel, in Shenzhen, his family are in full support of his decision, although he admits he would have given it all away with or without their backing. He said: "I don’t care what others think. It makes me happy to give my money away. I used to be poor."

Chinese New Year Facts

The 15-day festival, which starts on January 31 this year, starts with the first new moon of each calendar year and ends on the full moon. According to Chinese astrology, it will be the Year of the Horse: this animal brings surprises in adventure and romance, and people born during this year are believed to be good communicators, kind, talkative, independent, and impatient.

Food is a big part of Chinese New Year celebrations, and many meals are eaten with family and friends. Some traditional dishes for the holidays are the New Year cake made from rice, steamed rice pudding, long noodles(for longevity), raw fish (for success), and dumplings.

Homes are cleaned top to bottom before the beginning of the new year, and all cleaning equipment is put away before New Year’s Eve because good fortune may be swept away if cleaning is done on New Year’s Day.

Before New Year’s Day, homes are decorated with trays of oranges and tangerines, a candy tray with eight kinds of dried sweet fruits, and live plants and vases of fresh flowers. Wishes for the new year are written on red paper. Red is a key colour for New Year’s celebrations, as it symbolizes a bright and happy future. People wear red clothing during the festivities. Children, unmarried friends, and close relatives are given little red envelopes with money inside for good luck.

Legend holds that the Chinese New Year began with a battle against a mythical beast called the Nian, who would come on the first day of the new year to eat children, livestock, and crops. In order to protect themselves from the Nian, villagers put food in front of their doors so that the creature would eat that and leave everything else alone. It was believed that the Nian was afraid of the colour red and firecrackers, so people would hang red lanterns outside and set off firecrackers.

The Lantern Festival on the 15th night is an ancient festival, going back for more than two thousand years. As part of the festivities, children take part in a nighttime parade, carrying lanterns with wishes drawn and written on them. The beautiful flying lanterns of the festival carry people’s dreams to heaven.

Toddler who was allowed to rip up old books by his Chinese parents, tears their life savings to shreds after discovering their money stash

A Chinese toddler who was allowed to tear old books by his parents ripped up the family’s entire life savings when he found the money under a bed. The little boy, 4, was left alone by his mother Liu Fan, 28, in the bedroom of their home in Xi’an, Shaanxi province, West China. The curious boy found the cash – thought to be worth around £3,000 – in a box under the bed and proceeded to rip it to shreds while his parents were none-the-wiser in a room next door.

Liu Fan, 28, said: ‘We don’t have much time for reading here. We didn’t really care when he ripped up the old books we had lying around, and it was easy to buy very cheap old books down the market which he happily ripped into small pieces. I thought if I left him alone with a book for an hour it would be no problem and we could hear the ripping sounds from the kitchen but didn’t think anything of it. My family told me that it was not and I now realise they were right after he found all our money and ripped it up. It was all our savings.’

The family had been saving for a deposit on a new apartment, which they were going to buy in the New Year. Thankfully, the family found a generous bank willing to match the value of the notes and exchange them for new ones. Mrs Liu added that she had now put a stop to her son’s destructive habit, saying: ‘I realise that perhaps it wasn’t very sensible, I’m just very glad that the bank staff agreed to help.’

We have all wanted to break things out of sheer frustration – especially on a Monday. Now women in China have a special place they can go to do just that. A shopping mall in Shenyang has opened a special store for people to break all kinds of normal household things – smashing them to smithereens with baseball bats.

Even writing it feels a bit satisfying – proof that the store should succeed in its aim, which is to relieve pressure and lift bad moods. But beware, there are no men allowed – this is a women-only zone. The store seems to be targeting housewives in particular. The store is divided into several zones, such as a living room and a bedroom. Mall business manager Wang Jingyu told the People’s Daily that the aim is for “women to come here to feel like they are in their own homes but without any limitations. They can break anything here.”

He added that the store is planning a kitchen-like zone in the future (though presumably without any knives). According to Wang, all the facilities in the store are real. Mobile phones and television sets – both satisfying to smash – are bought second-hand. Customers can also tear paper, hurl plates, and beat big bean bags in the corner. They are provided with gloves and helmets to prevent any accidental injuries – and ‘venting’ time is limited to just one mad minute.

Since the store opened, most customers have been college students and white collar workers, it was claimed. The common source of their frustration? Rest easy, Chinese men everywhere, relationships – perhaps surprisingly – did not top the list. According to the People’s Daily, most were bashing over job hunting and the economy. Could such a concept be a ‘hit’ in Britain? There’s no evidence of such a store opening up at London’s Westfield shopping centre any time soon – but a girl can always dream.
