A: Yes, I have it in my bag. Safety first, right?

E: Absolutely! Oh, and don’t forget to bring your swimsuit and a towel. We’ll definitely want to take a dip in the ocean.

A: The bodyboard is a small, rectangular board. It’s made of a combination of foam and plastic. You lie on it and ride the waves.

E: So it’s like surfing, isn’t it?

A: Well, it’s similar to it, but instead of standing on the board, you lie on your stomach. You paddle with your arms to gain speed and catch a wave, then use your body and legs to control the board and ride the wave.

E: I see. I think I’ll be just watching you first and may give it a go after that.

A: It’s a fantastic way to experience the power of the ocean. You’ll love it, I’m sure. Let’s just hope the weather stays fine.

Eating chocolate cake as part of a full breakfast can help you lose weight, say scientists. It sounds too good to be true but new research says having dessert – along with the traditional fry up – burns off the pounds.

Morning is the best time to consume sweets because that’s when the body’s metabolism is most active – and we have the rest of the day to work off the calories, a new study shows. Eating cookies or chocolate as part of breakfast that includes proteins and carbs also helps stem the craving for sweets later.

Researchers split 193 clinically obese, non-diabetic adults into two groups who consumed either a low-carb diet that included a 300-calorie breakfast or a balanced 600-calorie breakfast that included a chocolate cake dessert.

The group that consumed a bigger breakfast, including dessert, experienced few if any cravings for these foods later in the day. At the end those who had consumed a 600 calorie breakfast had lost an average of 18 kgs more per person than their peers.

Although both groups consumed the same daily total calories the participants in the low-carbohydrate diet group had less satisfaction and felt that they were not full. Their cravings for sugar and carbohydrates were more intense and eventually caused them to cheat on the diet plan. This also suggests that the dessert group will be more successful at keeping the weight off. Attempting to avoid sweets entirely can create a psychological addiction to these same foods in the long-term.

A meal in the morning provides energy for the day’s tasks, aids in brain functioning and kick-starts the body’s metabolism, making it crucial for weight loss and maintenance. And breakfast is the meal that most successfully regulates ghrelin, the hormone that increases hunger.

While the level of ghrelin rises before every meal, it is suppressed most effectively at breakfast time.

Basing their study on this fact, the researchers hoped to determine whether meal time and composition impacted weight loss in the short and long term or if it was a simple matter of calorie count. One of the biggest challenges that people face is keeping weight off in the long-term. Ingesting a higher proportion of our daily calories at breakfast makes sense. It’s not only good for body function but it also alleviates cravings. Highly restrictive diets that forbid desserts and carbohydrates are initially effective but often cause dieters to stray from their food plans a result of withdrawal-like symptoms. They wind up regaining much of the weight they lost during the diet proper.

Ultimately this shows a diet must be realistic to be adopted as part of a new lifestyle. Curbing cravings is better than deprivation for weight loss success.

Plans for the Summer

Tom: Hey Sarah, what are your plans for the summer?

Sarah: I’m thinking of taking a road trip with some friends. How about you?

T: That sounds fun. I’m planning to do some hiking and camping in the mountains.

S: Nice, where do you want to go?

T: I was thinking of going to the Lake District National Park. I’ve heard it has breathtakingly beautiful mountains, lakes and valleys.

S: That sounds amazing. How long are you planning to stay?

T: I was thinking of staying for about a week. I want to explore the park and do some backcountry camping.

S: What camping?

T: Backcountry camping, just camping in remote areas that are not accessible by car and you have to hike into the wilderness to reach your campsite.

S: Wow, that’s some adventure. And a week is a long time. I think I’ll only be gone for a few days on my road trip.

T: Yeah, I want to really make the most of it. Have you been to the Lake District before?

S: No, I haven’t. But I’ve always wanted to go there. And I’ve been to other national parks, and I found them just great.

T: Yes, they are, definitely. Have you started planning your road trip yet?

S: Not really, we’re still trying to figure out where to go. But we want to go somewhere with a lot of outdoor activities and a beautiful scenery.

T: Well, the Lake District would definitely fit that description. Maybe we’ll cross paths there!

S: That would be cool. Have a great trip!

T: Thanks! Are you planning to do any other activities over the summer?

S: Yeah, I’m also going to take a painting class. I’ve always wanted to learn how to paint, and I figured the summer would be a good time to do it.

T: That sounds like a great idea. Where are you taking the class?

S: It’s actually an online class, so I can take it from anywhere. I’ll probably do it from home, but it’s nice to have the flexibility to do it from anywhere.

T: I’m not sure yet, but I’m thinking of taking a coding class or maybe a photography class. I want to learn some new skills.

Love Notes

Today, we took our son to the train station so he could go back to college for the spring semester of his first year. When I got home, the house felt too quiet. I missed hearing him talk, play his guitar, and even the sounds of his video games. Every part of the house seemed empty without him.

But then, as I was walking around, I started finding notes. He had left me notes everywhere in the house. There was a note saying, “Have a nice bath,” in the bathroom on the edge of the bathtub. Another note on the mirror in the hallway said, “You look beautiful.” And inside my coffee maker, I found a note that said, “I love you.”

What a wonderful surprise! Finding these notes made me so happy. I kept finding more and more of them. Each time I found one, I was afraid it would be the last, but then I would find another. When he called me to let me know how his trip was going, I asked him why he had left all these notes. He told me it was because he didn’t want me to forget him.

As if that’s possible, as if I could ever forget him. I hope by now he has found the note I left inside the lunch I packed for him. It said, “Be careful and I love you.” Because I don’t want him to forget me either”.

It’s a funny picture of a boy with two pet animals. One is sitting on his head and the other is in front of him. I don’t really know what kind of animals they are. They are grey and furry. They look like a mouse but they are bigger. They may be guinea pigs or ferrets but I’m not sure. The boy is cute and blonde and he is smiling happily. He has got big blue eyes and he’s wearing a bright yellow jacket. It’s strange that the animal is sitting on his head. I wouldn’t let that if I were in the boy’s place.

Children usually like keeping pets. Most of them have cats or dogs. Others keep guinea pigs, goldfish or parrots. Some people like keeping exotic pets like snakes or foxes. I once had a neighbour who kept spiders as a pet. They were disgusting.

When I was a child, I had a cat. She was beautiful and kind. She liked it when I stroked her fur and she purred a lot. But she sometimes scratched me when she was angry. Keeping a cat is easy and cats are grateful for your love.

The boy in the picture is smiling broadly showing all his white teeth. He must love animals because he’s obviously not afraid of them and is happy to have them around. To tell you the truth I would probably scream my head off if there was an animal this big on my head. But I am not a big fan of animals, I never even had a pet in my life. It’s not easy to tell what kind of animals there are in the picture. They are mammals and rodents, that’s for sure. They are grey like a mouse, but they are definitely bigger, and their tails are longer. If I was allowed to use my cell phone at the moment I would try to find images of rodents in Google to find out what animals they are. They look cute in the picture, but I wouldn’t dare to touch them in real life. Not to mention keeping them.

Keeping a pet is a demanding task. You have to feed the animals, keep their living space clean and try to make their living circumstances as natural as possible. When it comes to pets most people choose a dog or a cat. Keeping them is not very complicated. They appreciate your love and care and can show their love easily. They are loyal and grateful animals and they are usually real friends. Some people though choose to keep strange or exotic pets in their homes. It beats me how somebody can keep venomous snakes or spiders at home, but it’s not extraordinary nowadays.

I’ve already mentioned that I’ve never had a pet and I don’t even plan to have one. My children kept nagging me for a cat or a dog when they were younger, but I never gave in. We’ve always been too busy to give proper care to a pet and I think it’s not fair to always leave it alone and not give as much love to it as it would need. My children always said that the pet would be their responsibility but I never believed them that they would keep to their promise. When they are grown-ups they can have their own pets if they still want to.
