Ezeket a szavakat akkor használjuk, amikor két dologról beszélünk, tehát mindig kettő dologra vonatkoznak, és főnevekkel együtt használjuk őket.

Nézzünk is meg rögtön egy-két példát:

Both movies are very good.– Mindkét film nagyon jó.
Neither restaurant is expensive. – Egyik étterem sem drága (a kettő közül).
We can go to either place. I don’t really mind. – Bármelyik helyre mehetünk a kettő közül), nekem mindegy.

BOTH OF …/NEITHER OF …/EITHER OF …

Amennyiben a fent említett szavakat OF követi, úgy a főnév mindig többes számban van az OF után, illetve mindig ki kell tenned a következők közül valamelyiket:
– the (határozott névelő)
– these/those (mutató névmás)
– my/your/his/her/our/your/their (birtokos névmás)
– Mary’s (birtokos szerkezet)

Tehát az a szerkezet, hogy „Both of movies” nem jó, kétféleképpen mondhatod helyesen: „Both movies” vagy „Both of the movies”.

Az, hogy mikor melyik szerkezetet használod a BOTH kifejezéssel (tehát of-os vagy of nélküli) gyakorlatilag mindegy, csak figyelj arra, hogy ne keverd őket!

Ha két emberről beszélsz, használhatod a következő szerkezeteket (ebben az esetben az OF használata kötelező!):

both of us – mindketten (mi)
both of you – mindketten (ti)
both of them – mindketten (ők)
neither of us – egyikünk sem (mi kettőnk közül)
neither of you – egyikőtök sem (ti kettőtök közül)
neither of them – egyikőjük sem (ők kettőjük közül)
either of us – bármelyikünk (mi kettőnk közül)
either of you – bármelyikőtők (ti kettőtök közül)
either of them – bármelyikük (ők kettőjük közül)

Ahogy azt a példákban is megfigyelhetted, a BOTH/BOTH OF után a főnév, így az ige is többes számban van: both girls are pretty = both of the girls are pretty

A NEITHER és az EITHER után a főnév és az ige is egyes számban van:

Neither restaurant is expensive.– Egyik étterem sem drága (a kettő közül).
Either restaurant is expensive. – Bármelyik étterem drága (a kettő közül).

Ha OF-os szerkezetet használsz, akkor pedig a főnév mindenképpen többes számban lesz, az ige azonban lehet egyes vagy többes számban is:

Neither of the restaurants is/are expensive. – Egyik étterem sem drága (a kettő közül).
Either of the restaurants is/are expensive. –Bármelyik étterem drága (a kettő közül).

A BOTH/NEITHER/EITHER szavakat használhatod önmagukban is:

I can’t decide between the two dresses. I like both. – Nem tudok dönteni a két ruha között. Mindkettő tetszik.
’Is your girlfriend British or American?’’Neither, she is Australian.’ – ’Barátnőd brit vagy amerikai?’ ’Egyik sem, ausztrál.’
’Do you want cake or ice-cream?’ ’Either. I like both, so I don’t really mind.’ – ’Sütit vagy fagyit kérsz?’’Bármelyiket. Mindkettőt szeretem, szóval mindegy.’

Végül pedig jegyezd meg a következő kifejezéseket, mert nagyon gyakoriak:

Nagyon fontos, ne keverd össze! Ahogy beszéltük, a fenti szerkezetek csakis 2 dolgora vonatkozhatnak, ha több dologról van szó, akkor az ANY/NONE/ALL szerkezeteket használjuk. Figyelj csak:

KÉT DOLOG: 

There are two good restaurants in the neighbourhood. You can try either of them.
Két jó étterem is van a közelben. Bármelyiket kipróbálhatod a kettő közül.

We tried two restaurants. Neither of them were good. /Both of them were really good.
Két éttermet is kipróbáltunk. A kettő közül egyik sem volt jó./Mindkettő nagyon jó volt.

TÖBB, MINT KÉT DOLOG:

There are many good restaurants in the neighbourhood. You can try any of them.
Sok jó étterem van a közelben. Bármelyiket kipróbálhatod.

We tried a lot of restaurants. None of them were good./All of them were really good.
Sok éttermet kipróbáltunk. Egyik sem volt jó./Mindegyik nagyon jó volt.
