Talking about New Year’s resolutions

A New Year’s resolution is a promise we make for the new year. Regardless of what resolution you commit to, the goal is to improve life in the coming year. Some people make a promise to change a bad habit, such as quitting smoking, others make a promise to develop a new, positive habit, such as an exercise program, or wasting less food. The most common reason for failing a New Year’s resolution is setting unrealistic goals, or not to keep track of progresses. By making your resolutions realistic, there is a greater chance that you will keep them throughout the year. So, are you ready to make some New Year’s resolutions?

What are the most common New Year’s resolutions?

exercising more

losing weight

eating more healthily

learning a new skill

quitting smoking

több edzés

fogyókúrázás

egészségesebb táplálkozás

új ismeretek megszerzése

dohányzás abbahagyása

quitting drinking:This is what many people suffering from a bad hangover say after a wild party.
getting a new job:Is also a very popular resolution, mostly if you are not happy with your current job.
getting out of debt: Paying off debts is also a very popular resolution at the end of the year.
saving money: Improving finances is a resolution that about 14% of people make every year.
getting organized: Time management and better organization is another important thing many people with to improve.
spending more time with family: Unfortunately, only a small number of people can maintain this goal.
enjoying life to the fullest: This resolution sounds very pleasant, but the failure rate is very high.
travelling more: Some of the first things we tend to think of in a new year are those exotic destinations and foreign countries we would love to see.
improving a relationship: Soon after the holidays, when the festive spirit is over, reconciling with family and friends is the last thing people care for.
learning a new language: Learning a new language is a good idea and this resolution ranks among those that quite a high percentage of people actually keep. Well … I told you!
spending less time on Facebook: Spending too much time on Facebook and other social networks is a considerable problem for surprising number of people these days.
spending less time watching TV: The only reason why people are willing to cut their TV time is because they can watch the same things online.
getting rid of old clothes: The main problem with this resolution is that some people find themselves emotionally attached to clothes.
doing something for charity: Once the holiday is over and we return to our everyday reality, unfortunately, our generosity considerably decreases.

Why to make a resolution?

Why should we make promises to ourselves? Perhaps because we know that resolutions are hard to stick to, especially when we want to give up a bad habit, like smoking, drinking, or eating too much chocolate. Another reason could be that they test our will-power. After all, going to the gym or cooking a healthy meal after a long day at work means making an extra effort. Traditionally, the beginning of a new year also brings the need for order, the need to get rid of the old stuff and magic some freshness and novelty into our boring daily lives. Selling old unwanted stuff online is definitely a modern solution to the problem and the money you get could help finance a resolution you’ve made, such as redecorating your home or renewing your hairstyle or wardrobe.

Many New Year’s resolutions focus on improving our health, fitness or finances, which often require sacrifices. Therefore, it is not difficult to see why so many of them last only for a month or so into the year. Why not pick something pleasant for the new year instead? Taking up a hobby you’ve been postponing for years might make a difference in your stressful life. The poll also shows that many people try to focus on personal relationships as well: spending more time with the kids, meeting one’s friends in person rather than online or admitting that our relationship with our spouse or partner needs some improvement can lead to a more fulfilling life.

“I’ve always wanted to do a Christmas special,” Rod Stewart remarked. “And this was truly worth the wait because what we were able to accomplish is just beyond my wildest dreams.”

Stewart’s concert special was taped in September and it captured Stewart as he performed a collection of some of the most beloved holiday standards and traditional songs from his album also titled Merry Christmas, Baby.

Throughout the special, Stewart was joined by an incredible array of superstar artists, including Michael Bublé on “Winter Wonderland.”
He was united with Mary J. Blige on “We Three Kings” and Cee Lo Green on the title tune “Merry Christmas, Baby” featuring New Orleans’ favorite son, Trombone Shorty.
What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?” is a mesmerizing ‘virtual’ duet with Ella Fitzgerald featuring Chris Botti.
Among the other holiday favorites are “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town,” Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas,”  “Blue Christmas,” “When You Wish Upon A Star,” “Silent Night,” and “Auld Lang Syne.”

“Auld Lang Syne”: what does it mean and why do people sing it on New Year’s Eve? https://www.5percangol.hu/zenes_video/auld-lang-syne-what-does-it-mean-and-why-do-people-sing-it-on-new-years-eve/ Sat, 30 Dec 2017 19:09:02 +0000 https://cmsteszt.5percangol.hu/auld-lang-syne-what-does-it-mean-and-why-do-people-sing-it-on-new-years-eve/ On New Year’s Eve, it is almost inevitable to hear (and possibly try to sing) “Auld Lang Syne,” a song whose melody is synonymous with the new year (and the theme of change more broadly) in the English-speaking world. The text on which the song is based isn’t in English — it’s 18th-century Scots.

The story of how an 18th-century Scottish ballad became synonymous with the new year is tangled, involving both Calvinist theology’s traditional aversion to Christmas and the uniquely central role that watching television plays in American New Year’s celebrations.

As immortalized in When Harry Met Sally, a casual listener to the song is likely to be confused as to what the central opening lyric means.

The answer is that “Should old acquaintance be forgot?” is a rhetorical question. The speaker is asking whether old friends should be forgotten, as a way of stating that obviously one should not forget one’s old friends. The version of the song we sing today is based on a poem published by Robert Burns, which he attributed to “an old man’s singing,” noting that it was a traditional Scottish song. Fundamentally similar songs and poems existed in other forms in 18th-century Scotland.

What is the meaning of “Auld Lang Syne?”

Scottish people speak English with a distinctive accent, and we may also be aware of the existence of a language called Scottish Gaelic that is related to Irish and Welsh and is rarely spoken. But there is also what is known as the Scots language, which has clear similarities to English without truly being intelligible to English speakers — in much the way that Italian and Spanish are similar, but distinct, languages.

The point is that the phrase “auld lang syne” is not recognizable to English speakers because it is not an English phrase. Translated literally it means “old long since,” but the meaning is more like “old times” or “the olden days.”

When Harry Met Sally is right: It’s about old friends

As Meg Ryan’s character Sally says in the movie, this is a song about old friends. Old friends who haven’t seen each other in a while are meeting up again, having a drink, and reminiscing. If this were a song that you normally listened to in a quiet room at full length in English when sober, there would be no confusion. Since that’s basically the opposite of a New Year’s Eve party, which is when you usually hear the song, there is a lot of confusion. But the song itself is not especially complicated.

New Year’s is a big deal in Scotland

One reason a random Scottish folk song has come to be synonymous with the new year is that New Year’s celebrations (known as Hogmanay) loom unusually large in Scottish folk culture — so much so that Scotland’s official website has a whole Hogmanay section, which notes that, “Historically, Christmas was not observed as a festival and Hogmanay was the more traditional celebration in Scotland.”

Everyone likes a good party, and the end of one year and the beginning of the next seems like as good a thing to celebrate as anything else, so Scottish-inflected New Year’s celebrations — including the sentimental and appealingly nonspecific “Auld Lang Syne” — came naturally to the English-speaking world.

Canadian band leader Guy Lombardo made “Auld Lang Syne” an institution

From 1929 until 1976, first on radio and then on television, Americans tuned in to the New Year’s Eve broadcast by Guy Lombardo and the Royal Canadians, a big band act led by Lombardo, a Canadian whose parents immigrated from Italy. For decades, Lombardo owned December 31 — even earning the nickname “Mr. New Year’s Eve” — and every single year he played “Auld Lang Syne” to ring in the new year.

Then because of the influence of American movies and television shows on pop culture all around the world, conventional depictions of people ringing in the new year to “Auld Lang Syne” were beamed into living rooms globally. An 18th-century Scottish ballad thus became a midcentury American television ritual, and from there became a worldwide phenomenon — even though almost nobody understands the song.

The lyrics of the song (Mariah Carey version):

“Auld Lang Syne (The New Year’s Anthem)”

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,

And never brought to mind?

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,

And auld lang syne!

For auld lang syne, my dear,

For auld lang syne.

We’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet,

For auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,

And never brought to mind?

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,

And auld lang syne!

For auld lang syne, my dear,

For auld lang syne.

We’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet,

For auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my dear,

For auld lang syne.

We’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet,

For auld lang syne.

Eh…

Happy New Year, baby

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,

And never brought to mind?

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,

And auld lang syne!

Happy New Year, baby

Happy New Year, baby

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,

And never brought to mind?

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,

And auld lang syne!

In Hungarian we usually sing the following version:

„Jut még eszedbe, kedvesem,

A boldog ifjúság,

 Az erdőszéli kis patak,

S a régi jó barát.

Ó gondolj, gondolj néha rám,

A sors bármerre hajt,

Emlékül küldöm, kedvesem

A régi-régi dalt.”

New Year’s Day

People around the world celebrate the start of a year on New Year’s Day. It is one of the oldest holidays. In the Western cultures of Europe, North America, South America and Australia most people celebrate New Year’s Day on 1 January. People of other places and cultures observe the new year at other times depending on their different calendars. The Chinese New Year, for example, is celebrated for a month beginning in late January or early February. In Iran New Year’s Day is in March, on the first day of spring. Followers of the Jewish religion celebrate the new year in the autumn. According to the Islamic calendar, the new year starts with the month of Muharram. Because the calendar is based on the movement of the moon, Muharram can begin in autumn, summer, spring or winter.

Many traditions and customs surround New Year’s Day in the United Kingdom. On the night before, called New Year’s Eve, people have noisy parties and grand feasts. They stay up late and count down the seconds until midnight. Firework displays are often organised and people will go outside at midnight to watch them. At midnight it is traditional to kiss or shake hands and wish other people “Happy New Year”. Many people make New Year’s resolutions, or promises to themselves. They see New Year’s Day as a chance to make a fresh start.

Different cultures celebrate the new year in many ways. The Dutch eat doughnuts for good luck. People in the South of the United States cook black-eyed peas for luck as well. For the Jewish New Year, called Rosh Hashana, people eat sweet honey so that they will have a sweet year ahead. The month-long Chinese New Year includes outdoor parades and fireworks. During the Hindu New Year festival called Diwali, people exchange gifts and light ceremonial lamps. Some Muslims send greeting cards for the Islamic New Year.

There have always been different dates for the start of the new year because different peoples used different calendars. Some peoples based their calendar on the movement of the moon. Other peoples based their calendar on the position of the sun. In ancient Babylonia the new year started when the crops started growing. Ancient Egyptians announced the new year each time the Nile River overflowed its banks. The Inca believed that the new year began on the shortest day of the year. In China the new year began when the midday shadow reached an exact length.

In 153 BC the Romans named 1 January as New Year’s Day. The Roman Catholic Church later changed New Year’s Day to 25 March. In 1582 a new Christian calendar moved the start of the year back to 1 January. Today most Western nations celebrate New Year’s Day on 1 January.

A. The different dates to celebrate the beginning of the new year are due to different calendars.

B. Muslim people usually celebrate the new year in the autumn but sometimes in the spring.

C. In the United Kingdom it is a popular custom to make new year resolutions.

D. Many nations have customs that are supposed to ensure good luck for the new year.

E. The celebration of the Chinese New Year takes a fortnight with fireworks and parades.

F. Christians celebrated the new year in the spring for centuries.

G. Ancient Egyptians welcomed the new year when the Nile receded after a flood.

H. Celebrating the new year on 1st January goes back to the Ancient Greeks.

I. The two main types of calendar in use are based on the movement of the sun and the moon.

J. At midnight in many Western countries people shake hands or kiss under the mistletoe.

When Harry Met Sally – New Year’s Eve Scene https://www.5percangol.hu/videogaleria/when-harry-met-sally-new-years-eve-scene/ Thu, 31 Dec 2015 09:17:13 +0000 https://cmsteszt.5percangol.hu/when-harry-met-sally-new-years-eve-scene/ p { margin-bottom: 0.1in; line-height: 120%; }

Harry: I’ve been doing a lot of thinking. And the thing is, I love you.

Sally: What?

Harry: I love you.

Sally: How do you expect me to respond to this?

Harry: How about you love me too?

Sally: How about I’m leaving.

Harry: Doesn’t what I said mean anything to you?

Sally: I’m sorry Harry, I know it’s New Year’s Eve, I know you’re feeling lonely, but you just can’t show up here, tell me you love me and expect that to make everything alright. It doesn’t work this way.

Harry: Well how does it work?

Sally: I don’t know but not this way.

Harry: Well how about this way. I love that you get cold when it’s seventy one degrees out, I love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich, I love that you get a little crinkle above your nose when you’re looking at me like I’m nuts, I love that after I spend a day with you I can still smell your perfume on my clothes and I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it’s not because I’m lonely, and it’s not because it’s New Year’s Eve. I came here tonight because when you realise you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of the life to start as soon as possible.

Sally: You see, that is just like you Harry. You say things like that and you make it impossible for me to hate you. And I hate you Harry… I really hate you. I hate you.

(They kiss and make up.)

Harry: What does this song mean? For my whole life I don’t know what this song means. I mean, ‘Should old acquaintance be forgot”. Does that mean we should forget old acquaintances or does it mean if we happen to forget them we should remember them, which is not possible because we already forgot them!?

Sally: Well may be it just means that we should remember that we forgot them or something. Anyway it’s about old friends.

Harry (Voice over): The first time we met we hated each other.

Sally (Voice over): No, you didn’t hate me, I hated you. And the second time we met you didn’t even remember me.

Harry (Voice over): I did too, I remembered you. The third time we met, we became friends.

Sally (Voice over): We were friends for a long time.

Harry (Voice over): And then we weren’t.

Sally (Voice over): And then we fell in love.

(Harry and Sally on the couch this time.)

Sally: Three months later we got married.

Harry: Yeah it only took three months.

Sally: Twelve years and three months.

Beteget jelentettek a római rendőrök https://www.5percangol.hu/news_of_the_world/beteget-jelentettek-a-romai-rendrok/ Mon, 05 Jan 2015 10:18:39 +0000 https://cmsteszt.5percangol.hu/beteget-jelentettek-a-romai-rendrok/ More than 80 per cent of Rome‘s police called in sick on New Year’s Eve

More than 80 per cent of Rome‘s police officers called in sick on New Year’s Eve as 600,000 revellers descended on Italy‘s capital city to see in 2015.

The stunning mass desertion sent shockwaves through Italian politics, with prime minister Matteo Renzi expressing his dismay on Twitter and promising to change the rules for public sector workers.

Renzi tweeted: “I read that 83 per cent of police did not work ‘because of illness’ on December 31.

“This is why we will change the rules of public sector employment in 2015.”

Tourists and locals set off illegal fireworks around the Colosseum and in Rome‘s historic piazzas with impunity, and the city’s mayor vowed the AWOL officers will be punished.

He wrote on Facebook: “They didn’t manage to ruin the party, but those responsible will have to be held to account.”

The municipal police, known as “vigili”, put their absence down to a dispute over pay and conditions rather than laziness or a desire to join the celebrations or to party. As well as claiming they were too ill to work, some officers insisted they were giving blood or cited unspecified physical ‘disabilities’.

“There are 5,900 of us and there should be 9,400,” the head of the police union, Stefano Giannini, was reported as saying by the Telegraph.

“With these numbers we can no longer provide a 24-hour service, seven days a week.”
Rome‘s police commander Raffaele Clemente described the absences as ‘absolutely unjustified‘.

‘I can only condemn the attitude of those who have tried to sabotage the New Year festivities,’ he said, adding that the action had ‘put at risk people’s safety but also the good name of the entire local police force and the city of Rome.’

7 egyszerű pezsgős koktél szilveszterre https://www.5percangol.hu/receptek/7_simple_champagne_cocktails_for_new_years_eve/ Mon, 29 Dec 2014 22:28:26 +0000 https://cmsteszt.5percangol.hu/7_simple_champagne_cocktails_for_new_years_eve/ Unless (unless = hacsak nem)  you’re making a drink where the flavour of the Champagne really matters (to matter = számít, fontos, lényeges), inexpensive (inexpensive = nem drága) champagne brands (brand = márka) work well! Remember to pour the mixers in first, then top off with champagne to avoid (to avoid = elkerül) fizzy (fizzy = buborékos) overflow (túlfolyás, kiömlés).

Mimosa

This one’s a brunch classic. Increase (to increase = megemelni, növelni) the flavour by using a 1:5 ratio (ratio = arány) of freshly-squeezed (freshly-squeezed = frissen facsart) orange juice to Champagne. Then add a splash (splash = spriccelésnyi, fröccsenet) of triple sec.

Kir Royale

The fancy (elegáns, előkelő) cousin to the made-with-white-wine (made-with-white-wine = fehér borral készült) Kir, the Kir Royale consists of (to consist of = áll valamiből) a dash of (dash of = fröccsenésnyi)  creme de cassis (currant syrup = feketeribizli likőr), topped off (topped off = feltöltött) with Champagne.

Bellini

Invented (to invent = kitalál, feltalál) at Harry’s Bar in Venice, the Bellini is best when made with ripe (ripe = érett) peaches. If peaches aren’t in season, try creme de peche (peach syrup = őszibarack likőr). Use a 1:4 ratio of syrup to prosecco.

Black Velvet

This is an easy and strangely (strangely = frucsán) delicious drink with a 4:1 ratio of Champagne to black Irish stout (stout = erős barna sör).

Death in the Afternoon

Traditionally (traditionally = hagyomány szerint) made from absinthe, a spirit now illegal in the United States, in a 0.5:5 ratio to Champagne, you can probably substitute (to substitute = helyettesít) pastis or another anise-flavored (anise = ánizs) liqueur.

Poinsettia

For a holiday brunch, make Poinsettias: a 1:4 ratio of triple sec to Champagne, with a splash of cranberry juice (cranberry juice = áfonyalé) added for color.

Nelson’s Blood

Named for the British Admiral George Nelson, this makes a great, if slightly (slightl = enyhén) morbidly-named, party drink. The recipe calls for (to call for = valamiért kiált, valamit kér/igényel) a 5:1 ratio of Champagne to tawny (tawny = vörösesbarna) Port.

Celebrating New Year’s Eve https://www.5percangol.hu/szokincsfejleszto_tananyagok/celebrating_new_years_eve/ Sun, 28 Dec 2014 12:07:18 +0000 https://cmsteszt.5percangol.hu/celebrating_new_years_eve/ CELEBRATING NEW YEAR’S EVE

It’s that time of year again already – the end of it – and with the coming of the New Year there is a sense of hope and a fresh start.  Crossing cultural and religious borders, New Year’s Eve is celebrated all over the world in many shapes and forms, but one thing is sure: it usually involves a big party!  Check out our selection of top places to be on the final day of the year, and in the words of poet Dylan Thomas, “Do not go gentle into that good night”!

Sydney

This is where it all starts, due to Sydney’s time zone. Over one million people gather round Sydney’s Harbour Bridge to witness a spectacular fireworks display in a spectacular setting.  If you are up for being down under this year, but it’s just too damn far away, you can still catch a live broadcast of the festivities on TV in many places throughout the world.

Amsterdam

If it’s a party you’re looking for, head to party central – Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Don’t expect elaborate official fireworks here. Revelers take more of a hands-on approach and set off their own firecrackers, bottle rockets and other entertaining explosives. The epicenter of the party is Nieuwmarkt (Newmarket) Square, but the fun spills over into all parts of the city.  Get yourself a bottle of champagne, maybe some protective eyeglasses and gelukkig nieuwjaar (“prosperous new year”)!

Paris

The city of light really lives up to its name on  “la Saint-Sylvestre“, the French term for New Year’s Eve.  The Eiffel Tower is simply gorgeous in the midst of Paris’ pyrotechnics. After washing down some oysters and foie gras with a little bubbly, head down to the beautifully illuminated Champs Élysées. All of this combines in making it the perfect place for a midnight kiss.

London

The activity is centered on the banks of the Thames and around the city’s mammoth Ferris wheel, the London Eye, where they serve up a fireworks display fit for a king. Around a million cosmopolitan spectators are expected to attend this year, and if you drink too much and lose your money, don’t worry. From the time Big Ben strikes 12 midnight until 5 am, the city known for expensive public transportation will actually provide free underground service to help get you home.

Rio de Janeiro

At the Copa, Copacabana – that’s where it’s at! Rio’s famous beach glows with the light of thousands of candles for its New Year’s celebration called Reveillon. It’s the middle of summer there so pack your thong if you’re planning on joining the 2 ½ million people ringing in the new year in Rio.

Ötször annyiba kerül Londonban szilveszterezni, mint Budapesten https://www.5percangol.hu/news_of_the_world/otszor-annyiba-kerul-londonban-szilveszterezni-mint-budapesten/ Fri, 26 Dec 2014 10:35:20 +0000 https://cmsteszt.5percangol.hu/otszor-annyiba-kerul-londonban-szilveszterezni-mint-budapesten/ New Year’s Eve in London is more expensive than Paris and New York and a quarter of Britons would rather ring in 2015 in affordable Prague or Budapest

London has been revealed as one of the world’s most expensive destinations to celebrate New Year’s Eve. Research conducted by Travelex showed that 24 per cent of Britons prefer to celebrate abroad in cities such as Prague and Budapest where the cost of alcohol and food is cheaper. Traditionally one of the most lavish nights of the year, the survey showed that Londoners and visitors spend £336.14 per person in the capital on December 31 based on the average cost of a pint of beer, a bottle of champagne, an evening meal and admission to fireworks displays.

However, the same night out in New York was said to be £118.60, while in Budapest it was even cheaper, costing £66.81 – with the price of a meal for two as little as £22. The cheapest destination out of those surveyed was found to be Prague, where dinner and drinks were shown to cost an average of just £42.90.

Of each of the six destinations surveyed, chosen because they are within a six-hour flight of London, the UK capital was the only city that is charging to see fireworks. London Mayor Boris Johnson recently confirmed the famous Thames fireworks will have an entry fee of £10 for the first time ever. Only half the number of attendees from previous years will be let in – meaning many families won’t be able to enjoy the traditional celebration, which was previously free.

Britons would need to budget for around £245 to ring in the New Year in Paris. Although it’s not cheap, spending New Year’s Eve in the French capital is still shown to be almost £100 cheaper than in the UK capital. Of the 2,000 people surveyed, 30 per cent of people said would like to spend their New Year in New York. The Canadian city of Toronto was also found to be good value for Britons looking to celebrate abroad.

The survey also reveals that men are much more likely than women to splash the cash on New Year’s Eve, with the average UK man spending £200 on the event – 18 per cent more than the women’s average of £169.

NEW YEAR – EUROPE

On New Year’s Eve most European capitals are transformed into party venues. If you think you know these cities well, you might still be pleasantly surprised by giving a chance to a new perspective. New Year’s Eve celebrations definitely provide visitors with a unique experience worth travelling for.

London New Year’s Day Parade

If you want to end the year with a Big Bang, watch Big Ben strike midnight and enjoy the spectacular fireworks by the London Eye. If you’re not worse for the wear, join the crowds on the 1st of January in the New Year’s Day Parade, which features over 10,000 participants from across continents: marching bands, dancers, cheerleaders, acrobats, musicians and street performers.

Berlin – one gigantic party

If you don’t mind the cold, have fun on the party avenue between the Victory Column and the Brandenburg Gate, where over a million people party all night long. There’s dancing in the side streets, entertainment by international stars and incredible laser and light animations all over the sky. Foods from around the world add to the party atmosphere culminating in the midnight fireworks.
