Only five of their squad were even born when Hungary played at the 1986 Mexico World Cup and, of those, only veteran goalkeeper Gábor Király, who probably has a full memory of the tournament, was in the starting line-up on this occasion.

As Lászlo Kleinheisler scored on his debut in the national team on Thursday in Oslo, Hungary had a 1-0 victory in the first leg of the play-off, there were high expectations among Hungarian fans for a breakthrough after Hungary failing to qualify for a major football tournament for 30 years.  

In the second leg last night in Budapest both teams were wearing black armbands and observe minute’s silence following events in Paris – and also honoured the memory of legendary player and coach, Pál Várhidi, who died recently and young international goalkeeper Márton Fülöp,  who had lost his battle with cancer on the day of the first leg.Tamás Priskin scored last night early in the first half, with a beautiful strike into the top corner to send the fans wild and giving the lead to Hungary again in front of the noisy crowd of about 25,000.

Norway enjoyed plenty of ball possession, as they had during Thursday’s first leg defeat in Oslo, but were once again unable to make it count. Hungary goalkeeper Gábor Király made excellent saves in each half blocking the attempts by Norway and Hungary confidently held on to the advantage for much of the match, and even doubled their advantage through a Markus Henriksen own goal before the same player then struck at the right end for Norway, but it was too late for the away team.

Hungary’s qualification came at the end of a turbulent campaign, during which they used three coaches as they finished third in Group F behind winners Northern Ireland. After Attila Pinter was sacked last September, and his interim replacement Pál Dárdai then stepped aside to focus full-time on his role as coach of Hertha Berlin, German Bernd Storck was appointed in July, and given the task of seeing the team through to the finals.

Christmas in Norway

Christmas Eve is the time when presents are exchanged. The gifts are sometimes brought by Santa Claus called ‘Julenissen’ in Norway. Presents are also brought by the small gnomes called ‘Nisse’. There are also gnome decorations. Children pick up the presents from under the Christmas Tree and read the cards on the presents out loud. As in Finland, a sheaf of wheat is often left out for the birds to eat over Christmas. Also a type of rice porridge is left for the ‘Nisse’ who is believed to guard the farm animals.

In some parts of Norway, children like to go carol singing and most children do. Often children will dress up as characters from the Christmas Story, such as the Shepherds and Wise Men, and go singing from house to house in their local neighbourhood. Another tradition in parts of Norway is that families light a candle every night from Christmas Eve to New Year’s Day.

Christmas wasn’t celebrated in Norway until about 1000 or 1100, when Christianity first came to the area. Before this people celebrated jul or jòl in the middle of winter. It was a celebration of the harvest gone and a way of looking forward to the spring. Lots of beer (juleol) was brewed and drunk in honour of the old pagan Scandinavian gods.

Maybe the most famous custom about Christmas in Norway is the big Christmas Tree that Norway gives to the United Kingdom every year. The tree is given as a present to say ‘thank you’ for the help that the people of the UK gave to Norway during World War II. The tree stands in Trafalgar Square in the middle of London and often hundreds of people come to watch when the lights are turned on.

Many different types of cakes and biscuits are eaten over the Christmas period in Norway. One of the most popular cakes is a special bread called ‘Julekake’ that has raisins, candied peel and cardamom in it. Rice Porridge is eaten on Christmas Eve either as a meal at lunchtime (served with butter, sugar and cinnamon) or as a dessert to the main evening email with whipped cream mixed in. If you find an almond in your portion you’re traditionally given a pink or white marzipan pig. The main meal is normally pork or mutton ribs served with ‘surkal’ (white or red cabbage, finely chopped and cooked with caraway seeds and vinegar) and potatoes.

Norway’s prime minister says the best place to find out what people are thinking is in a taxi. So Jens Stoltenberg disguised himself as a taxi driver one day and transported passengers around Oslo.

Footagefrom the prime-minister-as-taxi-driver scheme in June was posted Sunday on a daily newspaper‘s web site and the prime minister’s Facebook page.

The stunt, planned by an advertising agency as part of Stoltenberg’s re-election campaign, was taped with hidden cameras to catch Norwegians’ views on politics and their reactions when they realized their driver was their prime minister.

The hidden cameras also caught a confession from the prime minister – he has not driven a car in eight years. One passenger was not impressed with Stoltenberg’s driving skills, saying "this driving is not exactly the best I have seen."

Stoltenberg’s Labour party is trailing in the polls against the opposition Conservatives for the September election.
