Pasta al Forno (Baked Pasta)

Ingredients:

• 30ml (2 tbsp) olive oil
• 2 onions, finely chopped
• 2 celery stalks, finely chopped
• 1 large carrot, finely chopped
• 400g beef mince
• 1 x 680g bottle tomato passata
• 400g rigatoni

Béchamel sauce:

• 50g butter
• 50g flour
• 500ml (2 cups) milk
• 200g Parmigiano Reggiano, grated
• Salt and pepper to taste

Preparation:

1. Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the onions, celery and carrot and cook until soft. Add the beef mince and sauté until the meat is browned. Add the tomato passata, reduce the heat and simmer for a minimum of one hour.
2. Cook the rigatoni in boiling water until al dente. Drain and set aside. In a separate saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat, add the flour and stir to combine.
3. Gradually add the milk and, stirring with a whisk to avoid lumps, simmer until bubbling and thick in consistency. Combine the cooked rigatoni with the beef, béchamel sauce and the grated cheese. Season to taste.
4. Pour the mixture into a greased oven-proof dish and cook in an oven preheated to 190ºC for 45 minutes.

Coffee is a brewed drink. It is prepared from roasted coffee beans. Coffee plants were first exported from Africa and are now cultivated in over 70 countries. The two most common types are Arabica and the stronger Robusta. Coffee has a stimulating effect because of its caffeine content.

Coffee can be prepared in many different ways and there are many rituals surrounding coffee. For many people, starting the day with coffee or stopping at a certain point in the day to have a cup of coffee is a good way to relax for a few minutes. Having coffee with friends of family is also a celebration of being together.

There are many different types of coffee beverages. Espresso is a strong, short, concentrated coffee beverage. Cappuccino is a popular coffee drink made from espresso, milk and milk froth, while latte is made of espresso, a bigger amount of milk and milk froth. Macchiato is also espresso-based, served with a small amount of milk. Frappé is especially popular during warmer months, as it is an iced drink made from instant coffee, sugar, water, ice and milk. Filter coffee is a longer, less strong type of coffee that is made with more water. Turkish coffee is a method of preparing unfiltered coffee by simmering ground coffee beans in a pot.

Different cultures drink coffee in different ways. In Italy, espresso is served throughout the whole day. In France, the day is started with café au lait. In Northern Europe, people like their morning coffee with milk and pastries. Coffee houses are an important part of culture for many nations. Vienna, for example, is well-known for its coffee culture. For people in the Middle East, coffee still has some religious meaning and is used in rituals. 

Back in 1806, Napoleon tried to freeze out British commerce as a means to win the Napoleonic wars (and take over the world). The result was a disastrous continental blockade that caused the cost of chocolate to skyrocket and left Piedmontese chocolatiers in the lurch. Ever resourceful, chocolatiers in Turin started adding chopped hazelnuts to chocolate to stretch the supply as much as possible. The ensuing deliciousness was a fateful paste dubbed “gianduia.”

Over a century later, chocolate again became expensive and scarce due to rationing in Europe during World War II. An Italian pastry maker named Pietro Ferrero once again turned to the mighty hazelnut for salvation in 1946 and created Pasta Gianduja, renamed “Nutella” in 1964.

According to the Guinness World Records, Nutella’s 40th Anniversary breakfast celebration in Germany in 2005 earned the title of “Largest Continental Breakfast.” A total of 27,854 people gathered in Gelsenkirchen to enjoy a meal that consisted of little more than Nutella itself.

5. NUTELLA-RELATED CRIMES ARE ON THE RISE.

Several weeks earlier, Columbia University found itself at the center of “Nutella-gate,” an expose smearing the school for spending $6000 per week on the spread for one of its dining facilities, where students were allegedly snarfing 100 pounds of it per day.

Two bloggers in Italy decided to take their love of Nutella to the next level in 2007, and created a worldwide day of celebration dedicated to the addictive substance. In 2013, Nutella manufacturer Ferrero tried to shut down World Nutella Day before reconsidering. But as of 2015, at the request of Nutella Day founder Sara Rosso, Ferrero took over the holiday.

7. THERE’S NO MASKING THE FLAVOR.

The chocolate and hazelnut substance gianduia is named after a character from Italian commedia dell’arte named Gianduja. He is depicted as a smiling Piedmontese peasant with a three-point hat who rides around town on a donkey clutching a duja—which in the Piedmontese dialect means “container.” The duja was said to hold wine … but could have just as easily held a few pounds of that chocolatey hazelnut goodness, no? Gianduja masks are sold all over the Piedmont region of Italy, and his face was plastered all over early Nutella advertisements.

Nutella became so popular in Italy that Italian markets began to offer free “smears” of Nutella to any kid who showed up with a piece of bread. An abandoned Boeing 727 plane once owned by Pablo Escobar has been transformed into the world’s coolest Airbnb — and makes guests feel like billionaires. The private jet resides on an industrial estate in Bristol – and comes with a hot tub and sauna and can cost up to $1,055 per night.

Originally built in 1968 and fitted out as a private jet in 1981, the aircraft was still flying up until 2012 – when it made its final journey to Filton Airfield. Businessman Johnny Palmer, 41, secured consent from Bristol City Council for his project. He now offers guests the chance to live like a billionaires at 32-feet.

Johnny said: “It was built in 1968 for Japan Airlines and in 1981 it got converted into a private jet. It had a series of owners.

“Eventually it could not fly anymore and in 2012 it was decommissioned. There is a bit of a roll play cosplay thing going on there – people enjoy that experience and living that fantasy for a little while and then living their normal lives. The contrast – billionaire and real life – is actually really healthy to people.”

There have been many rumors about who the previous owners of the jet were – including an Arab prince and the Mafia.

“Someone said that Pablo Escobar might have owned it for a while,” he said. “As to where it came before that who knows – that doesn’t change the fact that we are doing so many positive stuff with it now.”

The unusual Airbnb boasts two double bedrooms with ensuite toilets and showers, as well as seats which can convert into beds. It comes complete with walnut panelling, leather seats, gold plated shower and toilet – as well as the original fully-fitted cockpit. While the aircraft does not have wings or engines, all other features work including the airstairs, lighting, three toilets, shower, kitchen, fridge and many of the cockpit lights.

Johnny said: “I always wanted to have a private jet and this was an opportunity to get one – the thing that I wanted was never a plane that flew it was just having a private jet so this was perfect. I just think they are cool – I just like airplanes. Everyone wants a private jet, right? On industrial estates people don’t really care what you do because visually they are not very nice as they are so that gives a creative opportunity to do weird things like airplanes. Whereas if I tried to do this in agricultural or residential setting you just wouldn’t get planning permission for it.”

The whole project was a restoration job that took several years to be completed.

“The stuff that is inside was fitted out in 1981 – before I was born – and all we have done was restored it to the best that we can,” he said.

“I did a lot of the electrics myself, I had a plumber, a carpenter – there has been lots of people who have been involved in the process.”

Johnny now has regular open days where residents living nearby can come and tour the plane for a donation to local charities.

He added: “I like that it brings joy to people and a lot of people have great nights on there, kids are inspired by it. People come up here and take selfies with it.”

The cheapest nights in the aircraft are £250 and the peak nights are £850 for the night. Peak times are in August and it’s nearly fully book the whole year. Johnny said he lends the jet for artists for free if they are doing music videos or photoshoots for artistic processes – mostly Drill and Rap artists. When asked if there had been any celebrities staying in the Airbnb Johnny said: “Not that I know – but it is also quite discreet.

“The whole point of it is that it is a very private space. Even if they did I would not say because respecting guest privacy is really important.”

With the popularity of the business, all the income has meant they can restore the jet and improve the experience.

“The money we get from it just goes back into the project to make it better and better for future guests. It has never the intended to make money.”

A pre-application was submitted this month for a second airplane to be placed next to the existing one.

“This one will be bigger and much more impressive. And much higher and a bigger structure,” concluded Johnny.

Feline okay? The app that tells you if your cat’s happy

Cat owners who love to take pictures of their furry friends now have a new excuse to pull out their smartphones and take a snapshot: it may actually help the cat. A Calgary, Alberta, animal health technology company, Sylvester.ai, has developed an app called Tably that uses the phone’s camera to tell whether a feline is feeling pain.

The app looks at ear and head position, eye-narrowing, muzzle tension, and how whiskers change, to detect distress. A 2019 study published in peer-reviewed journal Scientific Reports found that the so-called ‘feline grimace scale,’ or FGS, is a valid and reliable tool for acute pain assessment in cats.

“It helps human cat owners to know if their cat is in pain or not,” said Michel Priest, Sylvester.ai’s venture lead. “We were able to train a machine using machine learning and a series of images.”

The app could help young veterinarians, said Dr. Liz Ruelle of the Wild Rose Cat Clinic in Calgary, where developers trained the algorithm.

“I love working with cats, have always grown up with cats,” she said. “For other colleagues, new grads, who maybe have not had quite so much experience, it can be very daunting to know – is your patient painful?”

An app that learns patterns from images of cat faces can be helpful but cat owners should also look at their pet’s whole body, including the tail, for clues about their well-being, said Alice Potter from British animal charity the RSPCA.

“Cats that are worried or scared will hold that tail really tight and tense to them. And then aside from that, there’s also just thinking about their behavior in terms of are they eating, drinking, toileting, sleeping like they usually do?”

Thermal baths offer an endless number of entertainment opportunities for everyone, but there are a few things worth considering before your visit. Budapest has a dozen thermal baths, all very popular among Hungarians and foreign tourists alike. Whether you are visiting the most famous baths or the lesser-known places, here are some rules that every visitor should keep in mind, based on a list compiled by Frugal for Luxury.

Visit on a weekday

It is worth doing some rescheduling to your trip to visit the thermal baths on weekdays: not only will you save some money as tickets are cheaper during the week, but you will also avoid the crowds that usually flock there on the weekends.

Select the type of ticket you need

Most thermal baths offer many different types of tickets, usually to determine the length of time the ticket enables you to use the facilities. If you are only planning on a quick afternoon splash, there is no need to pay for a full-day ticket. Please note that tickets are for no re-entry in most of these places: once you go out, you will not be able to go back in.

Kid-friendliness

Some may worry about taking their kids to these places, but the general experience is that these places are very welcoming with families and their children and that kids do have the opportunity to have fun there. And if they have had too much of it, a staff member is usually always ready to help out with band-aids or anything else.

Lockers are included in the price

It might not be that obvious that the ticket you purchase does include a locker for your belongings. You are given a bracelet you can use to open the locker door. If you forget the number of your locker, just scan your bracelet on the screen provided.

Pack your pool slippers

Pool slippers or flip-flops are just as important as your swimsuit: if you do not have a clean(!) pair, you might be directed to the store to buy one – you will want to save that money for something else.

Bring a swimming cap

If you are planning to use the swimming pool, you will most likely be asked to use a swimming cap. Better to bring your own than having to buy one on the spot (see above). Also, if you have long hair, you might get asked to tie it up before entering a pool.

Bring your bottle of water

We highly recommend that you bring your own water – especially if you are visiting in the blazing summer heat or if you are planning to do a sauna session. Each thermal bath has at least a few water fountains, in case you need to refill your bottle.

Respect other people’s privacy

Many people visit thermal baths to relax and enjoy the healing power of hot springs. Whether it is the sauna or an immersion pool, keep in mind that other people might not be interested in other people’s storytelling or having wild kids splashing in the pools.
