Legend has it that Valentine was a priest who served during third century Rome. There was an Emperor at that time by the name of Claudius II. Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those that were married. With this thought in mind he outlawed marriage for young men in hopes of building a stronger military base. Supposedly, Valentine, decided this decree just wasn’t fair and chose to marry young couples secretly. When Emperor Claudius II found out about Valentine’s actions he had him put to death.

Another legend has it that Valentine was an imprisoned man who fell in love with his jailer‘s daughter. Before he was put to death he sent the first ‘valentine’ himself when he wrote her a letter and signed it ‘Your Valentine’, words still used on cards today.

Perhaps we’ll never know the true identity and story behind the man named St. Valentine, but this much is for sure…February has been the month to celebrate love for a long time, dating clear back to the Middle Ages. In fact, Valentines ranks second only to Christmas in number of greeting cards sent.

Another valentine gentleman you may be wondering about is Cupid (Latin cupido, “desire”). In Roman mythology Cupid is the son of Venus, goddess of love. His counterpart in Greek mythology is Eros, god of love. Cupid is often said to be a mischievous boy who goes around wounding both gods and humans with his arrows, causing them to fall in love.

What’s better on a hot summer day than a cool refreshing ice lolly? But you don’t have to head to the shops, here are some reasons why homemade ice lollies are better for you:

Cheaper: All you really need to make some ice lollies is some water and a little flavouring, which can be anything you like. Keep the costs right down by making a big batch – they’ll last for ages in the freezer.

Healthier: If you make your own lolly pops at home you know exactly what’s going in them. They’re also a great way of getting the kids to eat more fruit, and if you use milk to make them, calcium too. 

Fun: No cooking involved, making ice pops can be a fun summer activity for kids.

Strawberry ice lollies

150g strawberries
90g caster sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
500g tub of low-fat yogurt
100g melted white chocolate
60g sugar balls or strands
6 or 8 ice lolly moulds

1. Put strawberries, caster sugar and vanilla extract in a bowl. Crush fruit until roughly broken up and the sugar has dissolved.
2. Mix in low-fat natural yogurt. Pour into 6 or 8 ice-lolly moulds and freeze. Once frozen, take them out of the moulds and dip tips of the lollies in melted white chocolate, then quickly dip them in sugar balls or strands. Serve as soon as they set!

Cherry ice lollies

250g cherries, stoned
200g Greek-style yogurt
1 tablespoon honey
Finely zested rind of 1 lemon
Ice-lolly moulds and sticks

1. Place the ingredients in a liquidiser or food processor and whizz until smooth. Pour the mixture into the ice-lolly moulds and freeze for about 2 hours, until the mixture thickens. Press a stick into each and leave in the freezer and freeze until solid.
2. Remove from the freezer and dip the moulds swiftly into hot water to release the lollies.

A classic drink re-invented for summer, who would say no to a frozen gin and tonic?

15ml gin
90ml tonic
15ml sugar syrup
some slices of lime or cucumber so that it looks extra awesome when it’s frozen 

1. Sugar syrup: 2 parts sugar and 1 part water. Bring the water to a boil and dissolve the sugar into the boiling water, stirring constantly. Once the sugar is dissolved completely, remove the pan from the heat. (Note: Do not allow the syrup to boil for too long or the syrup will be too thick.)

You might think you need a lot of coffee to get you through the day – but it’s probably nothing compared to Helene Marsot, who drinks up to 100 cups a DAY. A taste tester for Dunkin’ Brands’ coffee, Helene is responsible for overseeing the quality of the drinks the company produces and sells.

During a standard week, the quality assurance manager estimates she gets through hundreds of different coffees on trips around the world. She said: “As a coffee quality assurance expert I will say that a good cup of coffee is a clean and uniform coffee with acidity, body, sweetness and mouthfeel in proper proportion. With coffee, there are so many variables that can impact the flavour.”

Even though she may not finish every cup, she insists the amount of coffee she drinks actually has a positive effect on her health. Helene, based in Canton, Massachusetts, USA, has been working in her current role since 2005 – sampling tens of thousands of cups of coffee in the past nine years.

As well as her own tasting, Helene oversees Dunkin’s coffee lab testers based both in the U.S. and in countries the drink is produced. She added: “It starts from the tree and finishes in the cup, but there are more than 100 steps in between – coffee is full of surprises and experiences.”

Each year, Dunkin’ Donuts sells more than 1.8 billion cups of hot and iced coffee globally. And on their website the brand claims some of their coffee tasters test up to 600 cups each day. Helene said: “I like that you can adjust any coffee to your taste and your mood: from a dark roast to a light roast, a drip brew, an espresso or a French press. You can also adjust the flavour with cream or no cream, sugar or no sugar, and by serving it hot or iced.”

William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon on April 23, 1564. Son of a glover and leather merchant, he very likely attended the local grammar school but there is no proof whatsoever of him going to university, despite the brilliance of his plays and sonnets. The next documented event in Shakespeare’s life is his 1582 marriage to Anne Hathaway, who was 8 years older and pregnant at the time. The couple had a daughter the following year and twins in 1583, but their only son, Hamnet died at the age of 11.

There is no information of Shakespeare’s whereabouts for the seven years before documents show him making a name for himself in London as an actor and playwright in 1592. Two years later he was a business partner in the group called Lord Chamberlain’s Men to become the King’s Men after James I came to the throne in 1603. His company was the most successful one in London and his plays were so much admired that he published them and the audience bought the “penny-copies” as popular literature. No playwright had been able to do this during his lifetime before. This was a period when owning books was a luxury for most people.

In 1599 the troupe built the Globe, an open-air theatre on the Southern bank of the Thames and in 1608 they also acquired an indoor theatre, where they played for a refined audience. In Elizabethan times all sorts of people went to the theatre to see the all-male cast perform comedies and bloody tragedies. It was a type of entertainment similar to the cinema in the first half of the 20^th century. Business was good and Shakespeare became a wealthy man. He retired around 1613 and died in Stratford, aged 52, on his birthday. Thirty-six of his plays were published by his fellow actors in 1623 in a book that became the main source of the Shakespeare revival of the 19^th century.

Gerund és infinitive alakok használata 1.

Először is tisztázzuk, hogy mi micsoda, így talán könnyebb lesz megérteni a szabályokat, és megtalálni a logikáját annak, hogy mikor melyiket kell használni.

INFINITIVE

Az „infinitive” magyarul főnévi igenevet jelenet. Az angol nyelvben két formája létezik a csupasz, azaz „bare infinitive”, illetve a „to infinitive”, amely – ahogy a neve is mutatja – felveszi maga elé a „to” szócskát.

Nagyon fontos, hogy nem egyezik meg (teljes egészében) a magyar főnévi igenév használatával, így amikor el szeretnéd dönteni, hogy melyiket használod egy adott mondatban, akkor ne a magyar nyelvből indulj ki.

Az „infinitive” alakokat használjuk szótári alakként is. Mi a „to” szócskával ellátott formát szoktuk a szószedetekben használni, de sok (főleg egynyelvű) szótár a csupasz alakot tünteti fel.

GERUND

A „gerund”, mint szófaj nem létezik a magyar nyelvben, talán ezért is okoz legtöbbször nehézséget a megértése a magyar nyelvtanulók számára. A legtöbben „inges” igének szokták hívni, ami helytelen, hiszen a „gerund” önmagában lehet főnév, melléknév, határozói vagy melléknévi igenév, de ige soha. Hogy ez világosabb legyen, nézzünk egy példát.

1) You’re learning English at the moment.– Te most éppen angolul tanulsz.

Itt a „gerund” egy Present Continuous igeidőben képzett állítmány (are learning) része, ami ugye áll egy megfelelően képzett „be” létigéből és egy „gerund”-ból.

2) Learnig English is fun.– Az angoltanulás jó móka.

A „learning” szó ebben az esetben egy igéből képzett főnév, tehát gyakorlatilag főnév, magyarul „tanulás”.

3) She improved her English, learning 50 new words every day.– Naponta 50 új szót megtanulva fejlesztette angoltudását.

Ebben az esetben a „learning” határozói igenév (megtanulva), amely szófajhoz a magyarban a –va,-ve, -ván, -vén végződésű szavak tartoznak.

4) The boy, learning how to ride a bike, is my brother.  – A biciklizni tanuló kisfiú az öcsém. 

Ebben az esetben pedig folyamatos melléknévi igenév (tanuló) lesz a „gerund”.

A melléknévi igenév az ige egyik személytelen alakja (a főnévi és a határozói igenév mellett), amely a mondatban általában melléknévi szerepet tölt be. A melléknévi igenév az ige és a melléknév tulajdonságait ötvözi. A mai magyar nyelvben háromféle melléknévi igenevet szoktunk megkülönböztetni: a folyamatos (egyidejű), a befejezett (előidejű) és a beálló (utóidejű) melléknévi igenevet. A folyamatos melléknévi igenév képzője az -ó/ő, a befejezetté a múlt idő jelével többnyire megegyező alakú -(o)t(t), a beállóé az -andó/endő.

RÖVIDEN A HASZNÁLATÁRÓL

Mielőtt részletesen megnéznénk, hogy mikor melyik alakot kell használni, röviden, nagy vonalakban összefoglalom a legfontosabb tudnivalókat.

„Gerund”(azaz „inges”) alakot használunk:

–          bizonyos igék után: I enjoy cooking. – Szeretek főzni.

–          prepozíciók után: She drank a cup of coffee before leaving. – Ivott egy csésze kávét, mielőtt elment („elmenés előtt”). 

–          amennyiben az ige(név) a tárgya vagy az alanya a mondatnak: Swimming is a great sport. – Az úszás kitűnő sport.

„To+infinitive”alakot használunk:

–          bizonyos igék után: I decided to quit. – Úgy döntöttem, hogy kilépek.

–          számos melléknév után: It’s difficult to get upearly. – Nehéz korán felkelni.

–          célhatározói mondatokban: I came to England to studyEnglish. – Azért jöttem Angliába, hogy angolul tanuljak.

„bare infinitive”(azaz „csupasz”, „to” nélküli) alakot használunk:

–          módbeli segédigék után: I can pick youupat 6 o’clock. – Fel tudlak venni 6 órakor.

–          a „let”, „make” és általában a „help” igék után: The mother let her childrenplay alone in the playground. – Az anyuka hagyta egyedül játszani a gyerekeit a játszótéren. 

–          néhány érzékeléssel kapcsolatos ige (see, watch, hear, notice, feel, sense) után: I saw her

–          walk awaywith him. – Láttam, hogy elmegy vele.

–          A „why” szóval bevezetett mondatok után: Why not goout for a cup of coffee before work? – Miért nem megyünk el inni egy csésze kávét munka előtt?

Fontos, hogy ezek a szabályok útmutatók, nem minden esetben valósulnak meg, fontos, hogy figyeljünk a kivételekre is. Most pedig térjünk át a részletes használatokra.

St. Lucy’s day

The 13^th of December celebrates the virgin St Lucia of Syracuse, who was martyred for her Christian faith in 304. Due to her purity she is associated with light, and her feast day is on the 13^th of December because in the old calendar this used to be the longest night of the year.

St. Lucy is a very popular saint in the Scandinavian countries, where people feel the lack of sunlight more intensely, and on this day every town and village in Sweden chooses its own Lucia, who is driven around town, preferably in a horse-drawn vehicle, to spread light and song in food stores, factories, old-age homes and medical centres. St Lucia wears a white gown and ‘light in her hair’, which in practice means a crown of electric candles in a wreath on her head. Each year, a national Lucia is proclaimed, with candidates presented in the newspapers a couple of weeks in advance. This is also the day of the Nobel awards closing ceremony and the laureates are greeted by St. Lucy.

In Hungary, Luca-day is remembered as the day when witches are abroad (probably because this used to be the longest night of the year), so people had to protect themselves from evil. They ate garlic and even smeared some on their animals to keep evil spirits away, drew crosses on gates and spread some ash to stop them from entering homes. Brooms were also locked away so witches couldn’t go for a ride. Many superstitions are connected to this day: girls tried to foretell the future by cooking 12 dumplings, hiding a note with male name in each, and the first one to come up to the surface of the boiling water held the name of their future husband. The most well-known superstition is that of the Luca stool, which has to be carved starting today and finished by Christmas. The person who stood on the Luca stool during the midnight Mass was able to recognize the witches in the community.

to hurt – fáj valami, nem használhatjuk folyamatos igeidőknél (stative verb), ezért a most éppen jelentés esetén is egyszerű igeidőben kell használni, itt egyszerű jelenben

There’s – There is … – van valami

There’s an awful lot you can tell about …– Sokatmondó/ Sokat elárul valamiről/valakiről

Present Perfect Simple-t használunk, amikor számadattal utalunk arra, hányszor csináltunk már valamit és még van lehetőségünk megtenni azt (I’ve seen lots of films in this cinema.; She’s written five novels.)

9.I bet if I think about it real hard, I could remember my first pair of shoes.

amikor egy cipőre (egy pár) akarunk utalni, akkor a pair of (egy pár) segítségével tudjuk ezt megtenni és a shoes ugyanúgy többes számban marad.

10.Mama said that they’d take me anywhere.

Reported Speech/Függő beszédben, ha múltban van a bevezető ige (said, told, asked, claimed, etc.), akkor a folytatásban is múlt időbe kell ‘eltolnunk’ az eredeti igeidőket és néhány segédigét is váltanunk kell, például: can-could, shall-should, will-would.

Mama said: “They will take you anywhere.” – Mama said they would take me anywhere.
