Six unusual hotels you want to stay in immediately

Attrap’Rêves, Frances

These cute bubble hotels have sprung up in three locations in France, allowing visitors to feel as though they are sleeping under the stars, with all the comfort of being indoors. The bubble rooms are located only a short walk from a village, so that you don’t feel too secluded, and also come with a nearby building housing a jacuzzi and star gazing map amongst other things. Dreamy.

Palacio de Sal, Bolivia

This translates as a palace of salt, obviously. It’s located on the world’s largest salt flat, near the crest of the Andes at an altitude of nearly 3650 metres. The original building was constructed in 1993, although it was replaced by a newer one in 2007 – fully equipped with a rule that you are strictly not allowed to lick the walls. Oh.

Magic Mountain, Chile

How amazing is this hotel? It’s served by a rope bridge, has its own waterfall and is in the middle of a nature reserve – anyone else think it looks like it’s come straight out of a Disney film? There are 12 rooms, and prices start at just £125. We’re sold.

Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve, South Africa

A real-life Flintstones themed hotel, the Kagga Namma is a luxury hotel built in the middle of a nature reserve. There are totally outdoor rooms – think comfy beds, walls carved out of stone, oh and no ceiling. Plus activities that include safaris and quad biking.

Poseidon Undersea Resort, Fiji

Located on a secret island in Fiji, this hotel is straight out of a Little Mermaid – although with less mermaids. Some of the resort is above ground, and the rest submerged like a giant see-through submarine. Pretty cool, no?

Hobbit Hotel, New Zealand

Lord of The Rings fans, listen up. This real-life Hobbit hotel features a themed menu and visits to Middle Earth film locations. You’ll get to see 20 of the filming spots in just one day: how’s that for dedicated fan? You can also get married there, which would probably be the best themed wedding, ever.

Burgled Family Receive UK’s Best Christmas Tree

A family whose Christmas was ruined last year by a devastating burglary have this year been given the UK’s best Christmas tree. The staggering 7.5 m tall tree – so tall it goes through the roof – took 24 hours to install in the Penniston’s home and contains more than 100 metres of Christmas lights.

It’s a startling contrast to this time last year when the family, from Maulden, lost items of both financial and sentimental value. Parents Nicola, 35, and Christopher, 38, told of the emotional impact the burglary had as thieves ran off with their children’s first teeth and Christmas presents. However, the smiles returned to kids Finlay, 7, and Jasmine, 12, who were surprised with the giant installation when they returned home today. The family had been out getting into the festive spirit by sledging at the nearby Milton Keynes Snozone – an indoor ski and snow centre.

Adorned with a hundred decorations created by school children from around the UK, the giant tree also contains details of kind deeds. The surprise, organised by Marks & Spencer, was part of their Two Fairies Christmas campaign.

On December 13 2013, after returning home from a last-minute shopping trip, the Penniston family found the front door wide open and the house raided by burglars. Yet it was the sentimental items and the emotional impact that had the biggest effect. Nicola, an HR consultant, said: “Last Christmas was a tough time for us – we just didn’t have a Christmas at all in the end. The most upsetting part was losing all the irreplaceable items.” Family photo albums were taken as well as items of jewellery and cash.

Finlay, seven, said: “This is the most epic Christmas we’ve ever had. I couldn’t believe it when I saw the tree! I don’t know how the fairies did it. Last Christmas I was scared to even go in my bedroom, now it’s the best room ever!”

Winter Tyres

Do you use winter tyres? After several cold snaps in recent years, Brits have slowly woken up to snow tyres which can keep going where normal rubber gives up. 1 ………………..

Should you bother buying winter tyres? How much do they cost and, crucially, do they actually work? 2 ……………….. More accurately, they’re cold-weather tyres, designed to work in lower temperatures, on wet and dry roads, as well as giving better performance on snow and ice.

The science bit is easily explained: winter/cold-weather tyres contain more natural rubber than regular tyres, and are constructed of a softer compound. 3 ……………….. If you see a winter tyre up close, you’ll spot that the tread is different to a more conventional summer tyre. The contact patch of a winter tyre is more rugged: they’re covered in thousands of ‘sipes’ – tiny channels cut into the rubber which help displace water at a faster rate. 4 ………………..

Cold-weather rubber is becoming more relevant to more drivers for two reasons. Firstly, because our winters are getting more and more unpredictable. 5 ……………….. Secondly, you can now get yourself winter rubber in a massive range of sizes, from supermini boots right up to gargantuan 20-inch wheel compatible items like you’d find on the back of a Porsche Boxster. It’s potentially a much simpler way to keep mobile without investing in a more expensive 4×4.

6 ……………….. Shoe a BMW 5-series for winter and you’re looking at an £800 bill, and the only way is up. A set of four winter tyres and 20-inch ‘RS Spyder’ alloys for CAR’s long-termer Porsche Panamera GTS comes in at a cool £4060, including fitting. Winter peace of mind doesn’t come cheap, and yes, you do have to get four tyres: settling for just a pair for the driven wheels will do more harm than good, as this unbalances the whole vehicle.

www.carmagazine.co.uk

A. On snow, it’s these little crevices that bite into the soft stuff, giving purchase and grip.

B. First things first: ‘winter tyres’, as we’re accustomed to calling them, is actually a misleading title.

C. Countries where winter tyres are obligatory have fewer accidents in winter.

D. Sometimes they’re mild, and sometimes the country grinds to a halt under a couple of inches of the white stuff.

E. This allows them to stay supple as temperatures drop below 7 degrees C, maintaining higher grips levels on the road, in conditions where a normal tyre becomes hard and less keyed-in to the asphalt.

F. There’s the obvious financial outlay to swallow: a set of four winter tyres for a Fiesta will set you back in the region of £350.

G. Having tested several types of winter tyres, we recommend getting a set, especially in the northern region of the country.

H. The UK still has very few winter tyres in use – just 3% of tyres sold in 2011 were designed for cold weather use – but trade bodies say the uptake is increasing.

Thirteen year old Californian inventor gets Intel backing for low cost Lego braille printer

If Shubham Banerjee cannot lay claim to being the world’s youngest venture capital-backed entrepreneur, he comes very close. Banerjee was 12 years old when he closed an early-stage funding round with Intel last month for his prototype for a low-cost Braille printer. Since then, the San Jose, California middle-schooler has turned 13.

After reading a fundraising flyer about the blind, Banerjee felt inspired to turn a high-tech version of Legos, the toy building blocks, into a device that could print in Braille. One day, he wants to mass-produce the printers and sell them for about $350, far less than Braille printers cost now.

This past summer, he worked on incorporating an Intel Edison chip, a processor aimed at hobbyists, into the printer. In September, Intel invited him to a conference in India to highlight uses for Edison.

There, he got a big surprise. Intel executive Mike Bell announced from the conference stage that the giant chipmaker would invest in his company, Braigo Labs. Until then, his funding consisted of the $35,000 his parents gave him. He plans to use it to build a better prototype of the printer and test it with more groups for the blind.

Banerjee says he gets mostly As and Bs as a student at the Champion School in San Jose, California. Teachers have given him time off to attend events like the conference in India and the Intel Global Capital summit this week in Huntington Beach, California. He catches up on school work on weekends, he says. While many young entrepreneurs who win venture-capital cash end up ditching their education to focus on their businesses full time, Banerjee says he won’t take that path. ‘It’s an after-school thing,’ he says.

Stray Dogs Ride Moscow’s Trains for Food

Many of Moscow’s stray dogs actually live in the suburbs and take the subway downtown daily to forage for food. While on the train they do normal commuting stuff like napping and listening for their stop to be announced. They find seats and sometimes remind one another where to get off the train.

Once their workday begins they go looking for easy targets like people eating street food and children. They employ a number of tactics to get fed based on the mark. They bark at noshing adults to alarm them into accidentally dropping their food. They rest their heads on the laps of kids and flash them their cutest puppy dog eyes. When the day is done they head back to the suburbs and rest up for the next day’s adventures.

The phenomenon is attributed to survival-based evolution. Researcher Andrei Poyarkov has been observing the strays for nearly 30 years. During this time he’s noticed they develop wolf-like characteristics and increased intelligence over the course of their lives. They also adopt a pack structure that favours “brain over brawn” with the smartest dog becoming the alpha of the group.

History of Drones

The history of unmanned aerial vehicles can be traced back to 1849, when the Austrian army could not attack the city of Venice the traditional way because of the canals. Their solution was to build balloons loaded with explosives and be sent over the city in favourable winds. About 200 balloons were launched armed with time fuses and some of them worked as planned, but a change of wind blew some back over the Austrian army. Although the bombing did not do much damage to Venice, the city surrendered two days later. While balloons are not strictly speaking drones, the basic idea was the same, limited only by the available technology.

The principle behind drones – defined as remote-controlled aircrafts – goes back to inventor Nicola Tesla, who was the first to patent a remote-control system. In 1898 he demonstrated a radio-controlled boat during an electrical exhibition in the USA and he tried to sell his idea to the U.S. military as a type of radio-controlled torpedo, but they showed little interest.

The first pilotless aircrafts were built during and shortly after World War I, using radio control technique. They were intended for use as aerial torpedoes to be used against Zeppelins, but by the time the technology was sufficiently improved, the war had finished and the Kettering Bug, capable of striking ground targets up to 121 kilometres away and travelling at speeds of 80 kilometres per hour, was not deployed. Its existence was kept a secret by the U.S. Army until World War II.

The British also developed successful pilotless target aircrafts in the 1930s, one of them called “Queen Bee,” which probably led to the adoption of the name drone (meaning a male, which does no work but can fertilize a queen) for pilotless aircrafts, particularly when they are radio-controlled.

In the 1930s the first radio control model aircrafts appeared and flying model planes has been a popular hobby ever since. The manufacturer also demonstrated a prototype target drone to the US Army in 1935 and in World War II nearly fifteen thousand drones were manufactured. A 1941 improvement was the installation of a television camera on a drone for better control.

After World War II, drones were used to collect scientific data in nuclear explosions but their main deployment was as reconnaissance drones by the US to spy on North Vietnam, Communist China, and North Korea in the 1960s and early 1970s. Their importance has grown again since the 1980 as more advanced technology provided better aim, and in the past decade miniature drones were built and tested for the military.

Drones have also proved useful in hurricane hunting, search and rescue missions and also in damage assessment during the 2008 hurricanes that hit Texas and Louisiana. In Peru archaeologists use drones to protect sites from squatters, builders and miners. Small drones helped researchers produce three-dimensional models of Peruvian sites instead of the usual flat maps—and in days and weeks instead of months and years.

Da Vinci’s Demons filming third season in Swansea

Filming of the third series of Da Vinci’s Demons is well under way as it appears from this behind the scenes video.

The US/UK blockbuster, set in Renaissance Italy, is filmed in the Swansea, Neath and Port Talbot areas. The next season is expected to air on Fox channels in 2015. The historical fantasy is produced by the BBC Worldwide-owned Adjacent Productions and is shown in 120 countries.

"The international success of Da Vinci’s Demons is due in no small part to the supremely talented production team based in Wales helping us make a world class drama series for the international audience," she said.

The first series, based on the early life of artist Leonardo da Vinci and starring Tom Riley, used the former Ford factory in Swansea as a studio set. Locations like Margam Castle also featured, recreating 15th Century Florence. The series was created by David S Goyer, who was writer of Man Of Steel, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

Chinese billionaire gives away entire fortune to charity, leaving his family nothing

A property mogul has decided to donate his entire £1.2 billion pound fortune to charity, leaving his wife and kids with nothing.

Self-made billionaire Yu Pengnian began his working life as a penniless rickshaw driver but at the age of 88, is one of the richest people in mainland China. You’d imagine that someone who had built such a fortune from nothing, would want to share their wealth with their family but in the case of Pengnian, you’d be wrong. Seeing as his family might be a little upset by the news, you might think he’d break it to them gently and quietly.

However, Pengnian chose to hold a press conference to make the startling announcement that they will get absolutely nothing. Instead his vast fortune will be given to a foundation he established five years ago to provide aid to his favourite causes including student scholarships, reconstruction work following the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, and operations for those, like him, who suffer from cataracts.

Luckily for the eccentric philanthropist, who lives in the five star Panglin Hotel, in Shenzhen, his family are in full support of his decision, although he admits he would have given it all away with or without their backing. He said: "I don’t care what others think. It makes me happy to give my money away. I used to be poor."

In memoriam Gyula Grosics (1926-2014)

The legendary goalkeeper of the Hungarian Golden Team of the 1950s passed away peacefully today, aged 88. He was famous for developing the “sweeper-keeper” style of play.

Grosics played 86 times for the national team and participated at three consecutive World Cups in 1954, 1958 and 1962. He was member of the gold-winning Olympic team at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. He earned his nickname ‘Black Panther’ due to the black jersey he was the first to sport on the pitch. His record is amazing: during his time with the national team, they got only 96 goals and scored 258.

His career started at the age of 15, as goalkeeper for the Dorog football club in 1943, and in 1950 he joined the most prestigious club of the time, the Budapest Honvéd. After coming home with a silver medal from the 1954 World Cup, he was accused of treason, finally escaping imprisonment but sent into exile to play for the Tatabánya football club. It was from there that he retired in 1963, giving up football because the Communist regime forbade him to join his favourite club, Ferencváros. He worked as a coach until he retired.

His dream came true though, when Ferencváros signed him on as a tribute on his 82nd birthday. He performed the kickoff in a friendly match against Sheffield United and stood in goal for a few minutes before being substituted.

May he rest in peace.

People have always wanted to look their best, and hairdressers and hairstylists—or “cosmetologists,” as they may be called—have helped them achieve that goal. These professionals shampoo, cut, and style hair. But they may also colour, straighten, or curl hair and give manicures, pedicures, and scalp and facial treatments. All states require hairdressers and hairstylists to be licensed, but training and apprenticeship requirements vary widely, so be sure to check before entering a program. Manual dexterity, an artistic sense, and an awareness of the latest styles are essential. Equally important are the “people skills” that make a visit enjoyable for customers and encourage them to come back. Hairdressers and hairstylists who take a genuine interest in their customers often develop the kind of following that makes it possible for them to one day open their very own hair salon or beauty parlour.
