New Year’s Day

People around the world celebrate the start of a year on New Year’s Day. It is one of the oldest holidays. In the Western cultures of Europe, North America, South America and Australia most people celebrate New Year’s Day on 1 January. People of other places and cultures observe the new year at other times depending on their different calendars. The Chinese New Year, for example, is celebrated for a month beginning in late January or early February. In Iran New Year’s Day is in March, on the first day of spring. Followers of the Jewish religion celebrate the new year in the autumn. According to the Islamic calendar, the new year starts with the month of Muharram. Because the calendar is based on the movement of the moon, Muharram can begin in autumn, summer, spring or winter.

Many traditions and customs surround New Year’s Day in the United Kingdom. On the night before, called New Year’s Eve, people have noisy parties and grand feasts. They stay up late and count down the seconds until midnight. Firework displays are often organised and people will go outside at midnight to watch them. At midnight it is traditional to kiss or shake hands and wish other people “Happy New Year”. Many people make New Year’s resolutions, or promises to themselves. They see New Year’s Day as a chance to make a fresh start.

Different cultures celebrate the new year in many ways. The Dutch eat doughnuts for good luck. People in the South of the United States cook black-eyed peas for luck as well. For the Jewish New Year, called Rosh Hashana, people eat sweet honey so that they will have a sweet year ahead. The month-long Chinese New Year includes outdoor parades and fireworks. During the Hindu New Year festival called Diwali, people exchange gifts and light ceremonial lamps. Some Muslims send greeting cards for the Islamic New Year.

There have always been different dates for the start of the new year because different peoples used different calendars. Some peoples based their calendar on the movement of the moon. Other peoples based their calendar on the position of the sun. In ancient Babylonia the new year started when the crops started growing. Ancient Egyptians announced the new year each time the Nile River overflowed its banks. The Inca believed that the new year began on the shortest day of the year. In China the new year began when the midday shadow reached an exact length.

In 153 BC the Romans named 1 January as New Year’s Day. The Roman Catholic Church later changed New Year’s Day to 25 March. In 1582 a new Christian calendar moved the start of the year back to 1 January. Today most Western nations celebrate New Year’s Day on 1 January.

Elderly man brings wrong child home from school

A 79-year-old man who thought he was picking up his great-grandchild from school on Friday drove home with the wrong tot. As soon as the great-grandfather made a right turn instead of a left out of the Sterling, Connecticut school, 5-year-old Everett Stone yelled “I live on Pine Hill Road!” which incidentally is the same street that his great-grandson lives on.

“[The great-grandfather] said ‘I know you live on Pine Hill Road but your mom is sick so you have to come to my house,’” the boy’s father, Derek Stone, 38, told The Post. “The man pulls into his garage and my son refuses to get out of the car. So the man goes into the house and gets his wife, who took my son’s hat off, and said ‘Hey you have the wrong kid,’ then they called the school.” The kindergarten boys were wearing similarly styled hats, the same color coats and are about the same height and build.

Instead of calling Everett’s parents or the police, the Sterling Community school secretary asked the elderly gentleman to drive the boy back to the school. She then notified the principal who called the boy’s parents. “The secretary says ‘Bring him back,’ at that point the police should have been notified,” Derek said.

Derek’s wife Angela panicked when Everett didn’t get off the bus with their other two children. “The principal gets on the phone, and tells my wife ‘There’s been a mix-up, your son went home with another kid’s grandfather,’” he said. Angela runs a daycare center out of their home so she couldn’t leave to pick up their frightened child, so the school sent him home on a school bus. “They put him on an empty school bus, scared to death, and sent him home alone,” Derek fumed.

Derek and Angela blasted the school for not immediately calling the police. They demanded that the state police investigate. They concluded that it was an innocent mix-up, but the parents are still fuming over the lax security at the school. “It’s scary that it could even happen, thank God it was an innocent grandfather who meant no harm to my child, but it could have been anyone walking in and taking my child,” Derek said.

Obese schoolgirl loses SIX STONE to battle for Junior Olympics swimming gold

A schoolgirl shed six stone (38 kg) to go from clinically obese to junior Olympic athlete. Breanna Bond, 11, weighed 14 stone (89 kg) and her weight made her a target for bullies. Just 14 months ago her mum Heidi decided it was time for Breanna, from California, to get fighting fit.

Now after a healthy diet and plenty of exercise, eight stone (51 kg) Breanna has her sights set on gold at the Junior Olympic Games. Breanna wants to be a triathlete and cheerleader and has already qualified for the 500-yard freestyle swimming competition at the Junior Olympic Games. She said: "I feel like I can move more in sports now and it’s a lot easier for me in cheerleading and cross country. I can just go faster."

Breanna was just two years old when mum Heidi noticed her daughter was gaining weight faster than children her own age. By the age of nine, she was so large she was being bullied at school. Heidi said: "I thought maybe it could have been a thyroid issue, maybe some kind of genetic disorder.” In the end though Heidi realised good old Southern fried cooking was to blame. She said: "We would make fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, and chicken fried steak."

They have now launched a website dedicated to Breanna’s weight-loss journey to inspire other children who are overweight. Heidi explained: "It’s an inspirational site to help encourage other children everywhere to get motivated, to exercise and to lose the weight."

Mothers are the happiest people in Britain

Mothers are happier with their lives than any other group in society, a major new study of relationships shows. One of the most detailed studies of Britain’s relationships ever carried out found that even for women in unhappy relationships, being a mother was closely related to being happy with life overall. Research involving more than 5,000 people over a two year period attempted to uncover the hidden secret of a lasting relationship – as well as the hidden pitfalls.

The Open University study found that gestures, such as saying thank you or simple praise, rather than grand romantic actions, were ranked among the most powerful bonds holding Britain’s couples together. It also uncovered some unlikely hidden practices – including an apparently widespread taste for couples dancing together privately in their living rooms. Researchers said dancing could range from putting on a meaningful track, such as the first dance at a wedding, to “silly” and raucous music.

As part of the study, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, thousands of couples took part in a survey asking them to rate their satisfaction with their relationships, their partners and their lives in general. The responses uncovered a marked divide between those with children and those without as well as between men and women. While women with children were among the most likely to rate themselves as being dissatisfied with their marriage or relationship or show signs of growing estrangement from their partner, they topped the list of those voicing overall happiness with life.

Childless women emerged as the least generally happy group in society, even though they also appeared to have the most satisfying personal relationships. Meanwhile fathers emerged as slightly less happy overall than men without children. It concluded that women are far more likely than men to transfer their focus to their children after becoming a parent – often to the frustration of their husbands and partners. When asked to name the most important person in their life, well over half of mothers said their children, compared with just over a quarter of fathers. By contrast two thirds of fathers said their wife or partner was still the most important person for them, compared with just over a third of mothers.

Middle aged people consistently showed less overall happiness with their relationships either than those in the first flush of romance or older couples who had been together for decades. But, conversely, people who registered having gone through a recent adversity, such as a bereavement or unemployment, showed a higher overall attachment to their partner.

1. The study focussed on

a) why some families are happier than others.
b) how fathers related to their children.
c) what promotes bonding in a relationship.
d) differences between mothers and childless women.

2. Dancing in one’s living room seems to be

a) a favourite activity with couples.
b) a way to let off steam for couples.
c) a widespread practice.
d) one of the practices unknown so far.

3. It seems that grand romantic actions

a) are required in most relationships.
b) are less valued than simple gestures of appreciation.
c) are preferred by more women than men.
d) are important to younger couples.

4. Women with children considered

a) themselves less happy than childless women.
b) their relationships more satisfying than childless women.
c) their lives overall happier despite being less happy in their relationships.
d) childless women less happy.

5. The fathers taking part in the interview

a) turned out to be a little less happy than childless men.
b) put their children first, just like the mothers.
c) understood that mothers were more tuned to their kids.
d) never admitted being jealous.

6. It was also discovered that

a) middle aged couples were more satisfied with their lives than the young.
b) elderly people valued their partners very highly.
c) certain problems may result in stronger bonds between partners.
d) younger couples deal with problems better than the elderly.

Boots made for the dog that is allergic to going for walkies outside

Bluey the weimaraner must wear tailor made boots otherwise his paws become unbearably sore if he goes on grass.

It’s a rough life for a dog if you are allergic to the great outdoors. But lovable Bluey has overcome his problem – by wearing a £50 set of boots. The eight-year-old weimaraner used to spend hours licking his poorly paws after walks.

Vets were stumped by his bizarre condition. But owner Julie Farr, 38, from Pembrokeshire, West Wales, solved the problem with boots specially made in the US. Julie, a nurse, said: “His paws were often inflamed and red. I tried tying carrier bags round his feet to ease the problem, but it wasn’t very practical. At first he wasn’t impressed and walked like a clown, but now he will happily wear them. It’s fantastic to see him running round without problems.”

Having a bad day? Woman hospitalised after porcupine embeds 200 spikes in her head

How unlucky can you get?

A Brazilian woman was hospitalised this week after a spiky porcupine fell from the sky and landed on her head. Housewife Sandra Nabucco was left in agony after the clumsy rodent embedded more than 200 of its sharp quills in her scalp. The porcupine apparently dropped from a telephone wire while the 52-year-old walked her dog in Gávea, an affluent neighbourhood south of Rio de Janeiro.

‘It was a huge shock. I felt a thud on my head and then felt spikes with my hands. The pain was enormous,’ she told Brazlian TV network Globo. Surgeons used tweezers to remove the quills, but not before taking a picture for the rest of the world to see. Despite Ms Nabucco’s painful experience, at least she can be content in the knowledge she saved the animal’s life. ‘I am a strong woman; an old person or child would have died. I also care about the animals,’ she said. ‘I saved its life. He broke his fall on my head.’

Toddler who was allowed to rip up old books by his Chinese parents, tears their life savings to shreds after discovering their money stash

A Chinese toddler who was allowed to tear old books by his parents ripped up the family’s entire life savings when he found the money under a bed. The little boy, 4, was left alone by his mother Liu Fan, 28, in the bedroom of their home in Xi’an, Shaanxi province, West China. The curious boy found the cash – thought to be worth around £3,000 – in a box under the bed and proceeded to rip it to shreds while his parents were none-the-wiser in a room next door.

Liu Fan, 28, said: ‘We don’t have much time for reading here. We didn’t really care when he ripped up the old books we had lying around, and it was easy to buy very cheap old books down the market which he happily ripped into small pieces. I thought if I left him alone with a book for an hour it would be no problem and we could hear the ripping sounds from the kitchen but didn’t think anything of it. My family told me that it was not and I now realise they were right after he found all our money and ripped it up. It was all our savings.’

The family had been saving for a deposit on a new apartment, which they were going to buy in the New Year. Thankfully, the family found a generous bank willing to match the value of the notes and exchange them for new ones. Mrs Liu added that she had now put a stop to her son’s destructive habit, saying: ‘I realise that perhaps it wasn’t very sensible, I’m just very glad that the bank staff agreed to help.’

NEW YEAR – EUROPE

On New Year’s Eve most European capitals are transformed into party venues. If you think you know these cities well, you might still be pleasantly surprised by giving a chance to a new perspective. New Year’s Eve celebrations definitely provide visitors with a unique experience worth travelling for.

London New Year’s Day Parade

If you want to end the year with a Big Bang, watch Big Ben strike midnight and enjoy the spectacular fireworks by the London Eye. If you’re not worse for the wear, join the crowds on the 1st of January in the New Year’s Day Parade, which features over 10,000 participants from across continents: marching bands, dancers, cheerleaders, acrobats, musicians and street performers.

Berlin – one gigantic party

If you don’t mind the cold, have fun on the party avenue between the Victory Column and the Brandenburg Gate, where over a million people party all night long. There’s dancing in the side streets, entertainment by international stars and incredible laser and light animations all over the sky. Foods from around the world add to the party atmosphere culminating in the midnight fireworks.

Prague – New Year’s Eve Cruise

If mingling with the crowd is not your thing, why not try going on a river cruise at New Year’s Eve. While the beautifully illuminated city goes by, enjoy the comforts of a heated deck, dinner and a champagne toast. Building a Nation: Lego Fan Builds All 50 US States In Bricks

A man has built all fifty American states – using his daughter’s Lego collection. Jeff Friesen wanted to keep his seven-year-old amused over summer so thought working on a theme with the plastic bricks would help pass the time. After experimenting with the Canadian provinces – he lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia – they soon decided that the U.S. states would offer more subjects. The result is a hilarious collection of Lego scenes and made-up characters that offer a quirky flavour of each region. Funny highlights include California represented by a hippy lady called Moonbeam riding in a compost-powered tri-scooter, New York’s Statue of Liberty fishing in the Hudson, and a Florida sunbather about to get chomped by an alligator.

Jeff, 47, explains: "Every summer I look after my daughter in the afternoon and as a way of keeping us amused I set up a tabletop studio we use to take pictures of her toys. This summer she was mostly interested in Lego. As a joke for my family and friends I started making Lego scenes from Canadian provinces and told them I was pitching Lego with the idea of a Canada-themed Lego series. That was all good fun but since Canada only has ten provinces the series ended too soon. I lived in the US for a couple of years and got to thinking that I should make Lego scenes from all 50 states. Given the limitations of my daughter’s Lego collection and the diverse nature of all 50 states I thought this might be an impossible task. It was a challenging enough idea that I had to try it, and to add an extra layer of difficulty I wanted every scene to be humorous.

"To begin I made a list of the states and added ideas and sketches to them over time. Often the limited set of Lego bricks guided the work away from my initial ideas, which led to some unexpected scenes. For example, I wanted to make the St. Louis Arch for Missouri but didn’t have enough bricks to do it in a pleasing scale. Then I remembered that much of the Tom Sawyer books take place in Missouri. There were enough brown bricks to make Huckleberry Finn’s raft, and that’s how the scene was born. My daughter and I have great fun. We build a lot of Lego scenes together, but for the "serious" pictures that are on my web site she mainly assists by finding bricks."

to keep someone amused – valakit elszórakoztatni
theme – téma
to pass the time – időt eltölteni, elütni
to experiment – kísérletezni
hilarious – szórakoztató, vicces
quirky – mókás
compost-powered – komposzt által meghajtott
to chomp – felfal, megesz
to pitch – (itt) megpróbál eladni
limitation – megkötés, korlátozás
diverse – változatos
challenging – kihívást jelentő
extra layer – plusz réteg
sketch – vázlat
initial – kezdeti
unexpected – váratlan
scale – méretarány
raft – tutaj
to assist – segíteni

True or false.

1. Jeff helped his daughter to build typical USA scenes out of Lego bricks.

2. Their first idea was to do all the Canada provinces.

3. The number of bricks often set a limit on what they could build.

4. All the fifty states are represented by a typical building.

5. Jeff made all the scenes humorous because he likes challenges.

Russia: Rise of the high-speed train surfers

Train surfers are increasingly hitching rides atop Russia’s high-speed trains for kicks or to dodge fares, it appears. In the latest incident, two men from Moscow were detained in St Petersburg after travelling for four hours in freezing temperatures on the roof of the high-speed Sapsan that links the cities. The offenders, aged 18 and 23, suffered no frostbite . They told police they climbed on top of the train for "thrills", not to avoid the expensive ticket, which costs about $120.

Russian Rossiya 1 TV reports that in November four children aged nine to 13 were found surfing a train "under a toxic influence" in the city of Perm. And a news website describes how a 24-year old Moldovan man was detained in February. He was surfing the Sapsan only in "purple panties" in which he had stashed his passport. The website quotes transport police officials as saying fines for train surfing and hopping are ridiculously low. The Russian parliament is currently debating a bill to raise the fine from 100 roubles ($3) to 5,000 ($150).
