Britain’s triumphant athletes suffered baggage chaos on their return from the Olympics this week after some bright spark decided to issue the team with 900 identical red bags.

Team GB won 67 medals in Rio, including 27 golds, to finish second in the medals table. But there will be no prizes for whoever thought it was a good idea to give the athletes matching luggage.

Several team members posted photos and video of the sorry scene at London’s Heathrow Airport on Tuesday, the Washington Post reported.

Those caught up in the mess included silver-medal-winning windsurfer Nick Dempsey, rowing gold-medalist Alex Gregory, and a man with a fitting name for such a trying situation: bronze medal-winning sailor Luke Patience.

Most of the athletes seemed to take the whole thing in good humor and all the British Olympians managed to find their bags.

However, Team GB may have set an unwanted world record for time taken to get out of an airport because it took about four hours to sort out the mess.

Rio 2016 Olympics tidbits https://www.5percangol.hu/news_of_the_world/rio-2016-olympics-tidbits/ Sun, 21 Aug 2016 14:09:34 +0000 https://cmsteszt.5percangol.hu/rio-2016-olympics-tidbits/ The Olympic Games have their magnificent sports moments, but there are also magical moments not related to sports only. Here is a collection of them about the Rio Olympics which – sadly – are over now and we will have to wait another four years to be able to root for the athletes again.

Cseh László, Michael Phelps and the triple tie

Even when he comes second Michael Phelps still knows how to make Olympic history.

Phelps claimed his 27th Olympic medal with a silver in the 100m butterfly, finishing behind Singapore’s Joseph Schooling who won with an incredible time of 50.39s.

But it wasn’t that Phelps added another medal to his overflowing collection but rather the fact he dead-heated with not one but two of his fiercest rivals throughout his career to bring a perfect end to what he said was his final individual swim ever.

Phelps touched in 52.11s to share the silver with long-time rivals László Cseh of Hungary and South African Chad Le Clos.

With Schooling breaking the Olympic record (50.58s) previously held by Phelps in the final, the US star was accepting the defeat from a kid whom he once signed an autograph for prior to the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The Singapore swimmer, 21, grew up dreaming of emulating the American, who he posed for a picture with back in 2008.

It took several moments after the race until Phelps realised he had been part of what is believed to be the first three-way tie in swimming history. “It’s wild, it’s really wild,” Phelps said.

“I looked up and saw second and I saw 52.11s and I was like ‘all right.’ Then Chad came over and then I saw László coming over and I looked back at the screen and I was like ‘Oh my God, we all tied for second. Three-way tie.’ It’s kind of a wild ending to our story for all three of us being on the silver medal podium.”

And there was the unprecedented sight of the three pool giants holding hands and picking up their silvers together on the podium.

Twins and Triplets

Anna Hahner of Germany and her sister Lisa Hahner the German twins crossed the finish line of women’s marathon in Rio smiling and holding hands, an act that quite a lot of people found controversial.

They came 81st and 82nd in women’s marathon.

They were accused of trivialising the Games by a senior German athletics official but there was some sympathy for them on social media.

The Hahners defended their performance in a Facebook post, saying they had done their best.

“Definitely not what we had hoped for…. Nevertheless, one of our greatest sporting moments. For this we had trained to our limit and sometimes beyond.”

Their performance was more than 21 minutes behind the winning time and 15 minutes short of their personal bests.

In an e-mail to the New York Times, Anna insisted that they crossed the finish line together by chance, calling it a “magical moment”.

Meanwhile, other onlookers have noted that these were not the only twins to finish together in Sunday’s race – North Korea’s Kim Hye-song and Kim Hye-gyong finished 10th and 11th.

And Estonia had triplets taking part. Leila, Lily and Liina Luik did not finish together but two of them were behind the Hahners and one failed to reach the line.

Chinese diver proposes to girlfriend on Olympic medal podium after she wins silver

China’s He Zi received the shock of her life when team-mate and boyfriend Qin Kai rushed up with a diamond ring during the medal ceremony of the women’s three metre springboard event.

Qin, who won a bronze medal in his own synchronised diving event, climbed up to the stage after He received her silver medal, getting down on one knee while holding a red box with the ring and a glass-encased rose.

“I didn’t know he would propose today and I didn’t expect myself to marry myself out so early,” said He, who tearfully accepted the proposal with a big hug.

“I saw him during the afternoon and he seemed to be memorising something, so I asked him ‘what are you doing?’ and he said he was singing,” she told reporters.

“I’ve forgotten most of what he’s said (during the proposal), but it’s largely what you can expect like promises, but what touched me the most is that he said he was willing to be bullied by me for life,” she said.

The 25-year-old has been dating the 30-year-old Qin for the past six years.

Fiji rugby seven team winning country’s first ever gold medal

Extraordinary scenes of celebration have erupted after Fiji won its first-ever Olympic medal.

Banks closed, shops shut and revellers took over the streets of Suva dancing, singing and cheering.

Fiji claimed the gold medal after defeating Great Britain 43-7 in the rugby sevens final at Deodoro Stadium.

Thousands of people across the island nation had stopped what they were doing to watch the history-making match. A 12-year-old boy even ran a half-mile journey to the nearest television set in order to watch the game.

Many supporters dressed in Fiji colours and rugby jerseys, carrying the national flag to cheer on the team.

At the final whistle blew, excited revellers took to the streets cheering and dancing.

“Some people even stopped their vehicles on the busy streets of Suva and got out with Fiji flags to join the celebrations, not paying much heed to the slight traffic jam they cause,” the Fiji Times reported.

This landmark triumph arrived at Fiji’s 14th Summer Games and in rugby sevens’ first appearance in the Olympic program. The raucous atmosphere at a packed-out Deodoro Stadium suggested the country and the sport had been well received by the locals.

And in a bid to further endear themselves to one particular distinguished guest, Fiji’s players knelt when handed their medals by Britain’s Princess Anne.

Usain Bolt celebrating his ninth gold medal by throwing a javelin

After his news conference ended in the wee hours of the morning, the Jamaican sprint superstar who says the Rio Games are his last Olympics went back onto the track with most of the lights in the stadium having already been turned off. He went into a darkened Olympic Stadium, surrounded by volunteers — and started throwing a javelin.

Bolt took a couple throws of the javelin, the last one going about 50 metres.

He posed for some pictures afterward, the javelin — which he requested a formal measurement of — still stuck in the Olympic Stadium turf.

Bolt’s final throw, by the way, would have earned him a sixth-place finish at this year’s Jamaican national championships.

Bolt bid a blazing-fast farewell to the Rio Games — and likely the Olympics altogether — with yet another record for the ages. He turned a close 4×100 relay race against Japan and the United States into a never-a-doubt runaway, helping Jamaica cross the line in 37.27.

Bolt’s record in Olympic finals is nine races, nine wins. Nobody’s done that before, and nobody’s on the horizon to do it again soon.

“I am just relieved. It’s happened,” he said. “I am just happy, proud of myself. It’s come true.”

AN AMAZING START WITH TWO GOLD MEDALS FOR HUNGARY https://www.5percangol.hu/news_of_the_world/rio-2016-an-amazing-start-with-two-gold-medals-for-hungary/ Sun, 07 Aug 2016 12:58:33 +0000 https://cmsteszt.5percangol.hu/rio-2016-an-amazing-start-with-two-gold-medals-for-hungary/ What an opening day for Hungary at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games! Hungarian Olympians never had such a strong start as yesterday: Emese Szász won the gold medal in women’s epee fencing and Katinka Hosszú beat everyone in 400 metres individual medley swimming and to top it all, she broke the world record, her only opponent in the pool. The men’s water polo team started out great with a tie against Serbia and the only bittersweet moment of the day was judoist Éva Csernoviczki’s 7th place, who was injured, but still tried her best. The first day started out just great with the men’s water polo match between Hungary and Serbia. We should keep in mind that the Serbian team won all world events in the last couple of years (except for the 2013 World Championship) and they are the absolute potential winners in Rio. But there are other great water polo nations who are threats to the title, out of which Hungary is one of the greatest. Our team played such an amazing match that we managed to pull off a tie, which is a perfect start against Serbia. And this is only the group phase where teams try to collect as many points as they can. So from this aspect the outcome doesn’t mean much, but a good start means a lot psychologically.

The Hungarian men’s water polo team truly played as a team (the first 8 goals were scored by 8 different players) and they have every chance to continue marching towards the final. Without any further talk, we should get down to the most exciting part of Day 1, which was Emese Szász’ fascinating battle for the gold medal. To be honest, nobody expected a gold medal, neither such a confident attitude, as she hasn’t been able to achieve outstanding successes at world events in a very long time. But the 33-year-old epee fencer proved statistics wrong and rose from the dead, if it was needed. As you saw her fighting her way for the mighty gold medal you realised how much she deserved it. And watching her whoops of joy and rejoicing was heart-warming. So Hungary has a new Olympic Champion in women’s epee fencing after Tímea Nagy’s successes in 2000 and 2004. Timi was also helped by four time Olympic Champion Győző Kulcsár, who is now Emese’s coach. Not to mention that Hungary’s first gold medal in Rio was won in fencing just like 4 years ago (Áron Szilágyi). This could be a lucky charm for Hungarians. What came next was even more unbelievable. It was Katinka Hosszú, the Iron Lady herself. We knew that she was in her best shape and that she was the absolute potential winner of the 400 metres individual medley. But she came, destroyed the field, and broke the world record with such ease that it was totally worth waking up for her in the middle of the night (in Hungarian time her final was at 3:50 am in the morning). It became obvious that Katinka’s only opponent is the world record as she beat everybody with 4 seconds! She said that she felt like she was at training and was able to do everything just like they planned with Shane. It was so good to see Shane’s fanatic, tribal-like jubilance. They are partners both in life and in the swimming pool and what they did in the last four years is incredible. New York Times even published a long article about their relationship. They are truly a winning duo and Katinka seems unstoppable. As their favourite saying goes: Hard work always pays off.

Congratulations Emese and Katinka!

Kitten Summer Olympics https://www.5percangol.hu/news_of_the_world/kitten-summer-olympics/ Fri, 05 Aug 2016 05:46:07 +0000 https://cmsteszt.5percangol.hu/kitten-summer-olympics/ The Rio Olympics aren’t the only major athletic event to look forward to this summer. Hallmark Channel will be debuting the Kitten Summer Games at the same time as the Olympics’ opening ceremony.

The network has experience hosting competitive cat content. Since 2014, Hallmark Channel has aired their annual Kitten Bowl head-to-head with the Super Bowl (and Animal Planet’s long-running Puppy Bowl). This summer’s program will feature more than 100 “cat-letes” competing in events such as wrestling, tennis, volleyball, gymnastics, track and field, and “boxing” (as in, kittens climbing into boxes).

Like the actual Olympics, the games will include big-name competitors like Cat Lewis, Hissing Bolt, Nadia Come N’ Scratch Me, and Pawdre Ag-Hissy. If you understood even half those references, a sporting event centered on cats may be right up your alley.

The Kitten Summer Games premieres at 8 p.m. Eastern Time on Friday, August 5.

What do the four-legged footballers of the Hallmark Channel’s Kitten Bowl do in the offseason? They go for the gold in their own Summer Games, including a de-cat-hlon and freestyle wrestling.

The cuteness quotient was off the leash as the tiny competitors found their footing on bite-size playing fields, frolicking on scratchable rings at the gymnastics “venue” and jumping little hurdles decked out with delectable feathers intended to keep competitors on the move over at track and field.

Escapees were corralled by spotters, who ringed the sets as huge cameras shot the action.

Hallmark decided to stage a kitten Olympics special on the success of its three Super Bowl-timed Kitten Bowls.

“Unlike a lot of other professional athletes, they kind of take their sweet time. All of a sudden in the middle of a big event there’s a cat nap.” “They don’t know the rules. They don’t care. They kind of just freestyle it at an awful lot of these events.”

“You’ve gotta keep an eye on them. They’re animals, and they’re bloodthirsty competitors.”

Hungarians at Rio 2016 Olympics https://www.5percangol.hu/news_of_the_world/hungarians-at-rio-2016-olympics/ Thu, 28 Jul 2016 14:22:15 +0000 https://cmsteszt.5percangol.hu/hungarians-at-rio-2016-olympics/ The Hungarian Olympic Committee (HOC) sent the entry of 160 (159+1 backup) Hungarian sportswomen and sportsmen to the organisers of the Rio Olympic Games. Let’s see who we can root for soon. Hungary will be represented in 21 branches of sport by 94 sportsmen and 66 sportswomen. With the sport experts – the team leaders, trainers, coaches, doctors, masseurs, technical staff, delegation leaders and the members of the team office – this number exceeds 300.

“Besides the observance of the competition programme, with the effective utilisation and change of accreditation, they ‘won’t even have five minutes of rest’ and this is how we were able to expand the delegation. The HOC brings 294 people, while federations cover the costs of 25-30 sport experts, with HOC’s coordination, of course” said Team Leader László Fábián.

Hungarians will compete in 21 sport branches in Rio: athletics, badminton, boxing, cycling (mountain bike), diving, fencing, gymnastics, judo, kayak-canoe, pentathlon, rowing, sailing, shooting, surfing, swimming, table tennis, tennis, triathlon, water polo, weight-lifting, wrestling. Some members of the team leading and the team office have already flown to prepare the arrival and the accommodation of the delegation. The majority of the Hungarian team will leave for Rio on the 30th of July with a direct charter flight.

The flag bearer of the Hungarian team will be: Áron Szilágyi.

Fourteen-year-old swimmer Ajna Késely, the athlete of Kőbánya Swimming Club is the youngest member of the 2016 Hungarian Olympic team. The talented young athlete’s spectacular results even attracted five-time Olympic champion swimmer Krisztina Egerszegi’s attention. The young swimmer trains very hard, which earned her a place in the Hungarian Olympic team. The fact that I’m the youngest member of the Hungarian Olympic team is only a statistical curiosity said Ajna to Sporthír Telekom-Service.

“To me, the most important thing is to do well in the swimming pool, and break my individual records. Shortly after the April national championship I got a bit uncertain about my competency, but soon after, I managed to rebuild myself physically and mentally – said the young athlete. I am looking forward my first Olympics, while my thoughts have already started wandering around the 2017 World Cup, which will be held next year in Budapest. Now, I really understand the usefulness of the course I took on mental control some time ago; this helps me a lot to focus on important moments of upcoming events.”

Vocabulary Builder – Olympics https://www.5percangol.hu/szokincs_kozossegi_anyagok/vocabulary-builder-olympics/ Thu, 21 Jul 2016 08:32:06 +0000 https://cmsteszt.5percangol.hu/vocabulary-builder-olympics/ In this lesson you are going to learn some general words and expressions to be able to talk about the Olympics as well as specific vocabulary for summer and winter sports.

One tradition at the beginning of the Olympic Games is bringing the Olympic torch through the host city – the city where the Games will be held – to light the flame at the arena.

The general word for someone who does sports is an athlete. Olympic athletes train with the best coaches from the world. A coach/trainer is someone who teaches/trains athletes.

Some Olympic sports are team sports. The word for the other people on your team is teammates.

Olympic athletes compete for the gold, silver and bronze medals and a person who wins is called a medallist. During the medal ceremony each medallist stands on a podium and the national anthem, the official national song of the gold medallist’s country is played. When a particular team is expected to win they are called the favourite and someone who has a disadvantage or who is not expected to win is called the underdog. But sometimes the underdog manages to pull off a surprise victory.

If an athlete performs better at an event than anyone else in history he sets a new world record. The Olympics gives a chance to demonstrate good sportsmanship. That’s a person’s behaviour and attitude while participating in sports. Especially fair play and courtesy. An example of good sportsmanship is an athlete who lost congratulating the winners. An example of poor sportsmanship is screaming and cursing after a defeat. Unfortunately some athletes resort to doping, using drugs to improve athletic performance which is not allowed. If it’s discovered the athlete isdisqualified and removed from the competition. Olympic athletes should remember that they are role models, examples that many people – especially young people – observe and imitate.

In addition to the Olympics there are also the Paralympics for athletes with disabilities.

Let’s learn some specific vocabulary for the summer and winter Olympics.

Winter Olympics

Two sports that involve snow are skiing and snowboarding. There are actually two types of skiing, Alpine skiing, more commonly called downhill skiing, is done on a slope or an incline whereas Nordic skiing more commonly called cross-country skiing is done on a flat surface. In freestyle skiing or ski jumping the skier goes downhill to pick up speed then goes off a ramp and flies to the air.

In bobsled two or four people race down on an icy track on a sled. This is the general word for a vehicle that sleds on snow or ice. Luge is similar but it uses a different type of sled with one or two people. And in a sport called skeleton the athlete lies face-down on a sled and goes down the track head-first.

Three sports that are done on an ice rink are speed skating, figure skating and ice hockey. Speed skating is a race, a competition where the fastest athlete wins. In figure skating the skaters perform artistic jumps and spins and in ice hockey each team uses their sticks to get the puck into the goal.

Summer Olympic sports

Athletics or track and field is a general category that includes many different kinds of events, sprints, running short distances very fast, hurdles, jumping over barriers, relay races in which the runners hand off a baton to a teammate continuing the race.

As well as jumping and throwing events such as the pole vault, discus throw and more, gymnastics is another general category. It involves acrobatic events such as the balance beam, the uneven bars, the vault and the rings. Gymnasts also do a floor routine in which they perform various flips jumping and turning in the air.

Three sports done in the swimming pool are diving, water polo and synchronized swimming. And there are many outdoor water sports such as rowing and sailing. A few more interesting sports in the summer Olympics are archery, shooting at a target with a bow and arrow, equestrian, which is the art of horseback riding and fencing, the sport of fighting with swords.

Triplet threat: the Estonian sisters who will run in Rio Olympics https://www.5percangol.hu/kozepfoku-olvasmanyok/triplet-threat-the-estonian-sisters-who-will-run-in-rio-olympics/ Fri, 27 May 2016 10:53:53 +0000 https://cmsteszt.5percangol.hu/triplet-threat-the-estonian-sisters-who-will-run-in-rio-olympics/ Leila, Liina and Lily Luik from Estonia will make Olympic history when they cross the start line for the women’s marathon in Rio. Twins competing in the same event is not uncommon at the Olympic level. But the Luiks are believed to be the first identical triplets to compete against each other.

The 30-year-old sisters, from the southern university town of Tartu, only took up long distance running when they were 24.

“We have been active since childhood, we love dancing, we love to be active and this pushed us to professional sports,” Lily said. Liina, who got the sisters to start running, said long distances appealed to them more than the technical nature of sprinting. After a couple of years, they realised they were good enough to compete internationally and decided to try for the Games, under the slogan “Trio to Rio”.
