Playtime is usually supervised by teachers or other school staff members to ensure the safety and well-being of the students. They may also facilitate games or activities to encourage positive interactions. Where Did the Phrase “The Dog Ate My Homework” Come from?

Dogs are known as man’s best friend. Dogs keep us safe, are hard workers … and can provide a handy excuse in a pinch. Maybe that’s why versions of the classic expression the dog ate my homework have been around for hundreds of years.

Today, the dog ate my homework is used as a stock example of the kind of silly excuses schoolchildren give for why their work isn’t finished. Very rarely do people say, “the dog ate my homework” and expect it to be taken literally; they use the expression as an example of a typically flimsy excuse.

So where did the phrase come from?

Forrest Wickman, a writer for Slate, describes the legend of the 6th-century Saint Ciarán of Clonmacnoise as the alleged first recorded “the dog ate my homework” story. According to the tale, Saint Ciarán had a tame young fox that would take his writings to his master for him. One day, the fox grew up and decided to eat the leather strap binding the writings together instead. Still, this tale is more Garden-of-Eden parable and less terrible schoolchild excuse.

The notion that dogs will eat just about anything, including paper, turns up in lots of stories over the centuries. An example comes from The Humors of Whist, published in 1808 in Sporting Magazine. In the story, the players are sitting around playing cards when one of them remarks that their companion would have lost the game had the dog not eaten the losing card. Good boy.

Some attribute the creation of the dog ate my homework to a joke that was going around at the beginning of the 20th century. In a tale found as far back as an 1894 memoir by Anglican priest Samuel Reynolds Hole, a preacher gives a shortened version of a sermon because a dog got into his study and ate some of the pages he had written. However, the clerk loved it because they had been wanting the preacher to shorten his sermons for years.

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the first example of the dog ate my homework excuse in print can be found in a speech given by retiring headmaster James Bewsher in 1929 and published in the Manchester Guardian: “It is a long time since I have had the excuse about the dog tearing up the arithmetic homework.” The way this comment is phrased suggests that the whole dog ate my homework story had been around for some time before it was put in print.

When was the word homework created?

But in order for a dog to eat homework specifically, homework had to be invented (oh, and how we wish it hadn’t been). True, the word homework, as in what we call today housework, appears as early as 1653. But homework, as in school exercises to be done at home, isn’t found until 1852. Once we had homework, it was only a matter of time before the dog was accused of eating it.

How we use this phrase now

No matter the origin, sometime in the 1950s, the expression became set as the dog ate my homework. This inspired any number of riffs on the theme, like my cow ate my homework or my brother ate my homework. In the 1960s, the dog ate my homework continued to gain popularity. The expression popped up a couple times in politics over the years, like when President Reagan said to reporters in 1988, “I had hoped that we had marked the end of the ‘dog-ate-my-homework’ era of Congressional budgetary … but it was not to be.”

It seems unlikely that the dog ate my homework was ever used consistently or frequently by actual schoolchildren. In fact, it’s the unlikeliness of the story that makes it so funny and absurd as a joke. Instead, teachers and authority figures appear to have cited the dog ate my homework many times over the years as such a bad excuse they can’t believe students are really using it.

In the 21st century, students don’t spend as much time working with physical pen and paper as they once did. That may contribute to the decline in the use of the phrase. So, maybe soon we’ll see a new equally absurd phrase pop up. Come on Zoomers, you’ve got this.

“I saw [the Marion, Ohio Police Department] on YouTube, when a boy, a first grader, called the police with a problem,” Lena told InsideEdition.com. “I thought they would know math, and they do.”

“Take the answer from the first parenthesis plus the answer from the second parenthesis and multiply that answer times two. Work left to right doing the work inside the parenthesis first.”

His heart was in the right place, but not the order in which to do the equation. As a result, she got the question wrong, according to Columbus TV station WBNS.

One Facebook user attempted to school the officer saying, “Order of operations… PEMDAS! (Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication & Division, Addition and Subtraction). For future reference.”

Gruber told the station he hopes people will give him an “A” for effort.

“Hoping it is truly the thought that counts since apparently, I cannot!” he joked. “Especially since the answer was wrong, it was very nice for Molly to acknowledge our attempt to help her daughter with some math homework.”

The math may have been wrong, but the intentions were spot on, which is why Molly Draper is impressed with Officer Gruber.

“I didn’t believe her and asked for a screen shot. I thought it was pretty funny. And I love that they went ahead with it,” she told ABC News.

Some schools have been eager to remind pupils that there is a lot more to a person than their grades with an inspirational letter that has been moving parents to tears. The letters have been sent by numerous schools in the country to Year 6 pupils ahead of the latest round of examinations.

The positive message is very similar and in some cases identical but each school has said they agree with the sentiment exactly.

Pupils are reminded that they are ‘special and unique’ and that examiners don’t know them like their teachers or parents do.

Silverdale Primary Academy first sent letters like this two years ago. The Independent claimed in an article two years ago that the idea originated in the United States and has since been adapted.

But Liz Miles, the head teacher of Silverdale, said it is not something that schools have discussed.

She said: ‘It is something that is very reflective of how our school feels about the children.

‘We love our children and we want to do the best they can.’

She added: ‘We have a huge culture of positivity at Silverdale and we really believe that positivity is infectious.

One parent wrote on Facebook that she was saving the letter so she ‘could tell her daughter when she has tests next year’.

Dear Year 6 Pupils,

Next week you will sit your SATs tests for maths, reading, spelling, grammar and punctuation. We know how hard you have worked, but there is something very important you must know.

The SATs test does not assess all of what makes each of you special and unique. The people who create these tests and score them do not know each of you the way that we do and certainly not in the way your families do.

They do not know that some of you speak two languages or that you love to sing or draw. They have not seen your natural talent for dancing or playing a musical instrument. They say education is the foundation of society—and since Japanese and American societies are different in many ways, it may not surprise you that aspects of the two countries’ educational systems are like chalk and cheese. To find out just how different learning your ABCs (or あいうs) can be in the U.S. and Japan, study up on these nine things that are commonplace in Japanese public schools, but probably wouldn’t fly in America.

1. DRESS CODE

While only about 20 percent of public schools in the U.S. require uniforms, nearly all Japanese public school students suit up from junior high school on. The traditional uniform is a high-collared, black, military-style suit for boys and a beribboned sailor blouse and pleated skirt for girls (sorry ladies, there’s no pants option). These as-seen-in-anime styles are still the norm for middle school students, but the high school uniform is gradually being replaced by the tartan skirts and trousers with ties typical of Western parochial schools. Besides regulating clothing, shoes, and backpacks, many Japanese secondary schools impose strict bans on makeup, nail polish, hairstyles, and even eyebrow grooming that would make the average American teen wince. Perhaps the most eye-opening aspect of Japanese school dress codes, though, is that until the 1990s, these mortifying buruma (bloomers) were the standard girls’ PE uniform.

2. NO JANITORS

You won’t find a janitor in any Japanese school. Instead, industrious students and teachers roll up their sleeves and spend a few minutes every day mopping the floors, clapping erasers, and even scrubbing the toilets. Which means that students wouldn’t dream of putting gum under their chair or doodling on the desks—‘cause they know they’ll just have to clean it up themselves.

3. NO SUBSTITUTES

Leaving 30 teenagers unsupervised in a classroom would be the stuff of nightmares in an American high school, but that’s exactly what happens when a teacher calls in sick in Japan. Japanese secondary schools rarely use substitutes; instead, students are trusted to study quietly and independently.

4. THE SASUMATA

Even in a country as safe as Japan, schools have to prepare themselves for the possibility of a violent intruder. The sasumata is intended for this purpose: an aluminum pole with two curved prongs at one end which is adapted from an ancient samurai weapon—and found today hanging in schools all across Japan. The idea is to use the tool to immobilize the trespasser (who is hopefully not carrying a gun, which would be highly unlikely in Japan anyway).

5. KANCHO-ING THE TEACHER

If the sasumata doesn’t work, there’s always the kancho. A favorite prank among elementary and kindergarten students, all foreigners coming to Japan to teach English are duly warned about getting kancho’d. How it works: kids clasp their cute little hands together, extend the pointer fingers, then aim them right at the unsuspecting teacher’s butthole.

6. LUNCHES

It’s hot lunch every day at Japanese elementary and junior high schools. Students and teachers forgo cafeterias, instead eat all together at their desks in the classroom. Everyone eats the exact same meal, which is prepared by lunch ladies and served by students who take turns dishing out the rice, fish, and soup to their classmates. And because waste is a big no-no in Japanese culture, schools are known for enforcing 100 percent membership in the Clean Plate Club, requiring even the pickiest of eaters to finish every last bite.

7. GREETINGS

Greetings are an integral part of Japanese culture, and school is no exception. At the beginning and end of each class, students stand and greet the teacher, then bow in unison. Many high schools also bring a brief mokuso, (closed-eyes meditation) into school to allow students to center themselves before class.

8. SATURDAY SCHOOL

One-day weekends were the norm for Japanese schools until 1992, when the government began phasing out Saturday lessons as part of a national push for a more relaxed educational system. Despite this, many school boards ignored the change and continue to hold extra lessons on Saturdays—and almost half of all Tokyo elementary and junior high students still spend at least one Saturday morning a month doing math instead of watching cartoons.

9. SUMMER BUMMER

Japanese students do get a five-week summer vacation (about half as long as America’s), but calling it a “break” might be a stretch—unlike in America, the Japanese summer break is right in the middle of the school year, and though school is technically out, students and teachers will still typically come to school almost daily for club activities. Even elementary school students are assigned a legendarily hefty summer homework packet.

Japanese-style education seems to work for them; the latest OECD global math and science rankings place Japanese high schoolers at fourth in the world, while students in the U.S. have slipped to 28th place. So though we probably won’t find American students scouring the bathroom floor while wearing a pair of bloomers anytime soon, Saturday school may be worth considering.

It’s commonly believed that school kids started taking summers off in the 19th century so they’d have time to work on the farm. Nice as that story is, it isn’t true. Summer vacation has little to do with tilling fields and more to do with sweaty, rich city kids playing hooky and their sweaty, rich parents.

Before the Civil War, farm kids never had summers off. They went to school during the hottest and coldest months and stayed home during the spring and fall, when crops needed to be planted and harvested. Meanwhile, city kids hit the books all year long – summers included. In 1842, Detroit’s academic year lasted 260 days!

But as cities got denser, they got hotter. Endless lanes of brick and concrete transformed urban blocks into kilns, thanks to the “urban heat island effect.” That’s when America’s swelling middle and upper class families started hightailing it to the cooler countryside. And that caused a problem. School attendance wasn’tmandatory back then, and classrooms were being left half-empty each summer. Something had to be done.

Legislators, in one of those if-you-can’t-beat-‘em-join-‘em moments, started arguing that kids should get summers off anyway. It helped that, culturally, leisure time was becoming more important. With the dawn of labor unions and the eight-hour workday, working adults were getting more time to themselves than ever before. Advocates for vacation time also argued (incorrectly) that the brain was a muscle, and like any muscle, it could suffer injuries if overused. From there, they argued that students shouldn’t go to school year-round because it could strain their brains. To top it off, air conditioning was decades away, and city schools during summertime were miserable, half-empty ovens.

So by the turn of the century, urban districts had managed to cut about 60 schooldays from the most sweltering part of the year. Rural schools soon adopted the same pattern so they wouldn’t fall behind. Business folks obviously saw an opportunity here. The summer vacation biz soon ballooned into what is now one of the country’s largest billion-dollar industries.

Organizing

Involve your children with all the back-to-school organizing that you are trying to set up. Back-to-school is the best time for starting anew, and a way to ensure that it works for everyone is to help the kids create the systems. They can help put together what they will need in their homework station so they can feel ownership and pride, as well as a sense of accomplishment. This will hopefully make them want to keep it up once the school year starts.

A similar way of doing things with older children works, too. Have them help put a calendar together for the family and write out their schedule of activities, for example. That helps them feel in control of their own lives.

Safety

Nowadays there’s an important back-to-school safety tip that parents need to include in their discussions with children: What to do if a bully confronts you?

1. Try to recognize when someone looks mad or angry.

2. If bullies confront you, ignore them and don’t give them any attention; that’s just what they want.

3. Speak up. Tell a caring adult such as a teacher, parent, bus driver or playground supervisor. Once an adult is involved, the bully usually stops out of fear that his or her parents will find out.

Standing up for oneself is an invaluable life lesson for kids.

Monster saltwater crocodile stalked students at a primary school – and emerged from the water every time the school BELL rang for recess and lunch

A 3.7-metre saltwater crocodile which emerged every time the bell rang at an Australian school has finally been caught. ‘Shorty’ the maneater would lurk in the waters looking for his next victim during school breaks – but fortunately for the students he was fenced off from the school grounds. Shorty would habitually crawl from the Cowal Creek bed and peer through the fence. But schoolkids no longer need to be on the look-out at lunchtime after the maneater was captured.

However, his larger friend, a 4.5m saltwater beast, is still on the loose and the rangers have now declared him as the region’s most wanted croc. Ranger Coordinator Warren Strevens said he wasn’t ‘surprised’ when he heard the croc was tempted by the sound of the ringing bell. ‘I heard the story when we captured it…but it didn’t surprise anybody, he knew the habits of the school around bell time,’ Mr Strevens told Daily Mail Australia.

Caught using a float trap, it took three days to lure Shorty into his cage where a big piece of meat awaited him. The trap was configured so that when the 3.7-metre monster bit down on his dinner, the steel trap’s door closed behind him. He was then pulled out of the water and taken to a nearby crocodile breeding facility.
