The Reason You Rarely See Windows in Grocery Stores

Pulling up to their nearest grocery store or supermarket, shoppers will often see large windows spread across the front entrance. But once inside, natural light all but disappears. Stores rarely have windows along walls, near the front, or skylights. What gives?

The lack of windows is a component of retail shopping psychology, where retailers try to create an environment where people feel comfortable to spend both time and money. It’s why many stores have tile floors, which cause carts to make a lot of noise—forcing shoppers to instinctively slow down and browse more, or why stores may play up-tempo music when a store is busy to speed shoppers up.

In the case of windows, stores are after a sense of suspended time, where shoppers won’t notice inclement weather or encroaching darkness. The longer they shop, the more they spend.

There are practical considerations, too. Large windows letting in sunlight might cause fading on packages, making them seem worn to consumers. Swapping out valuable wall space for windows would also reduce the number of displays—and products—available to shoppers.

It’s possible this retail theory could eventually go out of fashion. Discount supermarket chain Aldi has experimented with stores in Germany that let in more natural light, though UV coatings are needed to prevent sunlight from affecting fresh food quality or product label fading.

Whether that will become more common in the grocery industry at large remains to be seen. If you’re feeling stifled by the lack of light, there’s always a farmer’s market.

Now in it’s 24th year Buy Nothing Day was the brainchild of Vancouver-based artist Ted Dave, who conceived it as a “day for society to examine the issue of over-consumption.”

Since 1997 its been held on the same day as Black Friday, in a pointed response to advertisers’ efforts encouraging consumers to spend more – and there are now associated campaigns in dozens of countries across the world.

The UK website for Buy Nothing Day says: “The rules are simple, for 24 hours you will detox from buying stuff – anyone can take part provided they spend a day without spending!

“Instead of shopping people around the world will take part in a 24 hour moratorium on consuming, either as a personal experiment or public statement.

“The anarchy that ensues on Black Friday has now become an absurd dystopian phenomenon … Black Friday sucks the life out of small businesses, who cannot compete against this ruthless price cutting. If you really need to shop on Buy Nothing Day, ignore the big retailers … make a commitment to support local independent shops and businesses.”

Black Friday was virtually unknown in the UK before 2010, but has quickly become Britain’s biggest shopping day. In 2015 approximately £2bn spent in shops and online over the 24 hour period.

Greenpeace has said it ‘supports the message of Buy Nothing Day’, and is using the day to raise awareness of the environmental impact of the fashion industry.

Dr. Kirsten Brodde of Greenpeace Germany writes: “Because it is so cheap, fast fashion is one of the highest selling product categories on Black Friday, with many major fashion brands and retail giants jumping on the bandwagon.

“Greenpeace has shown that fashion production uses lots of precious fresh water and pollutes rivers and seas with toxic chemicals, long before it hits the shelves. We are also consuming and trashing clothing at a far higher rate than our planet can handle.

“Today’s trends are tomorrow’s trash. The only solution is to reduce our levels of consumption. It could be as simple as taking a break from shopping on Black Friday to participate in global Buy Nothing Day.

The Buy Nothing Day website says the day “isn’t about changing your lifestyle for just one day – we want it to be a lasting relationship or maybe a life changing experience! “We want people to make a commitment to shopping less and living more.”

When is it? It always falls on the Friday after Thanksgiving in the USA. This year however Amazon launched its Black Friday deals 13 days early.

Where did it come from? Used to describe a pre-Christmas day of commercial carnage the term originates from Philadelphia USA, in the 1950s.

When did it appear in Britain? Online retail giant Amazon introduced the concept to the UK in 2010. Asda, owned by America’s biggest retailer, Walmart followed suit in 2013.

How much money is spent? It’s become the biggest shopping day in Britain, with approximately 1.1bn pounds spent online in just 24 hours. 

England’s first escalator

Imagine you’ve never seen an escalator, or ‘moving staircase’, before. One Wednesday in November 1898, you walk into Harrods and come face to face with Piat’s installation, the first moving staircase in England. You’d probably need a stiff drink after taking a ride, which is why Harrods staff were waiting at the top to offer brandy and smelling salts to traumatised customers after the ordeal.

Winnie the Pooh

A.A. Milne’s fictional bear Winnie the Pooh was a London invention. And although Winnie was named after a bear at London Zoo, Milne’s inspiration for the stories came from seeing his son Christopher Robin playing with a teddy bear bought in Harrods in 1921. 

Tiara Triangle

The three mile square area of Kensington and Knightsbridge which surrounds the store is known as the Tiara Triangle. It’s rumoured that 60% of Harrods customers live within this well-to-do Tiara Triangle.

Dress code

Harrodsville

Harrods is known as far away as New Zealand — although that’s not necessarily a good thing. In 1986, Harrods’ owner Mohammed Al Fayed launched a legal campaign against Henry Harrod, a restaurant owner in the New Zealand town of Otorohanga who wanted to name his restaurant Harrods.

In response, every business in the town changed its name to Harrods, and the District Council temporarily changed the town’s name to Harrordsville. Media coverage ensued, and Al Fayed dropped the lawsuit.

Harrods of Manchester

Harrods’ name has caused problems in England, too. In an attempt to open a chain of provincial stores, Harrods bought Manchester’s Kendal Milne & Co. department store in 1919. It was briefly renamed Harrods, but was changed back to its original name due to staff and customers protests. It was sold to House of Fraser in 1959.

The name in lights

Looks good, doesn’t it? Between 11,000-12,000 light bulbs are used to create this effect with a rumoured 300 needing to be replaced every day.

The lights were turned off as a mark of respect when Dodi Fayed and Princess Diana died in a car crash in 1997. Dodi Fayed was the son of Mohamed Al-Fayed, who owned the store at the time. A memorial to the pair was erected in the store, in the form of a bronze statue which depicts them dancing. It’s got a three-star rating on Trip Advisor.

Silver replica

There’s a sliver replica of Harrods (not full sized unfortunately). It was a gift from Harry Gordon Selfridge (of Selfridges fame) after he lost a bet with the managing director of Harrods as to which store would make the bigger profit in 1927. It used to be on display in Harrods, but sadly isn’t any longer.

Slithery security team

Shoes are a big deal, and no more so than at Harrods. In 2007, a pair of ruby and diamond encrusted sandals went on display, with a price tag of £62,000 — and a live cobra guarding them.

No word yet on who purchased the shoes — or whether they’re still in a stockroom somewhere, wrapped in a snake skeleton and rapidly gathering dust.

Animal department

Snakes aren’t the only animal in Harrods history — Harrods Pet Store was well-known for selling exotic animals to wealthy customers until it closed in 2014. 

Christian the Lion was bought from the store in 1969, playwright Noel Coward purchased himself an alligator as a Christmas gift and Ronald Reagan acquired himself an elephant called Gertie in a telephone sale. We’ll stick to socks, thanks.

The Great Exhibition

Harrods’ famous Knightsbridge location is largely thanks to the Great Exhibition of 1851 in Hyde Park.

Charles Henry Harrod ran a draper and haberdashery business in Borough High Street 1824-1831. In 1832 he established a grocery business at Upper Whitecross Street in Clerkenwell. However, in 1849, he took over a shop on the site of the current Harrods, as he wanted to capitalise on trade provided by the 1851 Great Exhibition in nearby Hyde Park.

It expanded into adjoining stores, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Some sources state that the term originated in Philadelphia, used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic that would occur on the day after Thanksgiving. Generous gran starts Christmas shopping in January for presents for her 80 grandchildren

A pensioner is preparing for a family-packed Christmas as she buys presents for her 80 grandchildren. Great-great-grandmother Mary Scholey, 82, not only has to start gift shopping early but also gets through piles of cards every year. And Mrs Scholey, called Nana Mary by the youngsters, has no trouble remembering the names of all 33 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Mary, who is a mother of 10 children, said: “I never really thought I would have a big family but 60 years ago there wasn’t that much of a choice in the matter. I had two sets of twins and six other children so the family just kept on growing. We are not on Facebook or anything so I get all of the news about my family through word of mouth.” She added: “Christmas is a busy time because there are so many of us but it’s nice to see everybody. It’s always busy here anyway so I’m used to that.”

No sooner has Christmas finished than Mary, of Sheffield, starts planning the following year, keeping an eye out for bargains at markets in nearby Wombwell and Barnsley. Son Stephen said: “Obviously with so many to buy for mum doesn’t spend a lot on each one, but she always puts a lot of thought into it. The children always get a Christmas and birthday present from her but these days she misses out the adults, otherwise the cost would be ridiculous. Although with so many presents to hand out she sometimes forgets where she has stored them during the year.”

Millions of bargain hunters are flooding stores to snap up their Black Friday deals – causing mayhem throughout the country. Arrests have already been made as shoppers battle over the best bargains in supermarkets which opened at midnight. Police have been called to stores in Manchester, Cardiff, Birmingham and London amid fears of crowd surges. Shoppers described scenes of “carnage” as people scrambled for the best deals.

Greater Manchester Police said at least two people have been arrested at Black Friday sales events already this morning. Officers attended a store on Excelsior Road in Cardiff twice after midnight over concerns about “customer conduct.” A woman suffered minor injuries after being hit by a falling television in Stretford and an ambulance was called.
