St Andrew’s Day (or in Scottish Gaelic ‘Là Naomh Anndrais’), celebrates Scotland’s patron saint on November 30. On this occasion Iain Lindsay Hungary’s British ambassador introduces the Scottish national wear. The video is in his excellent Hungarian, but you can also read the script in English.

“Hi, I’m Iain Lindsay, the British Ambassador. Today is Saint Andrew’s Day and I’d like to take this opportunity to explain a few things about Scotland’s national dress, the kilt, and what we traditionally wear with the kilt.

First, this is my kilt. The pattern or tartan, is that of the Lindsay family, or clan. Each clan has its own tartan. The kilt originated in the Scottish Highlands in the 16^th century. I have owned this kilt for over 35 years and it still fits. This is my sporran, a Scottish Gaelic word for purse. We wear it with the kilt. It is made of leather and fur. This is a formal wear sporran, so it has silver decorations. It is a sort of wallet or purse as the kilt has no pockets.

This is my sgian dubh, a small single-edged knife which is Gaelic for “black” or “hidden knife”. The knife is tucked into the top of the kilt socks. In the old days it was used for defending oneself in case of attack. Nowadays it is used only for decoration.
