Even the Pope Has Trouble with Customer Service

Most people have experienced the frustration of calling a bank and being put on hold, transferred between departments, or told that something simply cannot be done over the phone. It turns out that even the leader of the Catholic Church is not immune to this kind of everyday problem.

About two months after Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected as Pope Leo XIV, he called his bank in Chicago to update his phone number and address. It seemed like a simple task – but it quickly became complicated.

The pope answered all the security questions the customer service representative asked him, but there was still a problem. To change his phone number and address, he was told he would have to visit the bank in person.

Pope Leo tried to explain his situation. He said it would be “difficult” because he was living “out of town” and simply could not get there. This, of course, was something of an understatement – the pope lives in Vatican City, Rome.

When that argument did not work, he decided to try a different approach. He asked the representative whether it would make any difference if he told her he was Pope Leo. She hung up on him.

The story was shared publicly by Father Tom McCarthy, a longtime friend of the pope, at an event in Naperville, Illinois in late April 2026. Father McCarthy said that when he heard the story, he laughed – and admitted he would have done exactly the same thing as the customer service agent.

After the call ended so abruptly, the pope needed help. He turned to a fellow Augustinian priest, Father Bernie Scianna, who somehow managed to contact the bank’s president. However, even the president repeated the same policy: changes must be made in person, not over the phone.

When Scianna threatened to move the pope’s account to a different bank, the president quickly changed his position – saying the bank did not want to lose such a notable customer. Shortly after that, the bank made an exception and updated the pope’s information.

The pope’s final instruction was simple: “Don’t give the phone number out.”

The story went viral on social media and was picked up by news outlets around the world. Many people found it funny, but also surprisingly comforting. Father McCarthy said the unexpected attention made sense to him: “I think it’s just really connected with people – how normal Pope Leo is.” Father McCarthy summed it up simply: “He’s one of us.”

William is a pre-kindergarten student at Campbell Early Learning Center with a passion for flight. That shows them how many degrees the engine is. He’s very mechanically inclined. So, I suppose it was a natural progression to want to know about more fascinating things.

Amber Hines is William’s mom. She says his passion took off thanks to a connection with a Southwest Airlines pilot who brought William a company training manual and sat with him for two hours going over the charts and just talking shop with him. But William noticed something was a little off.

I discovered that two train monitors did not match. They did not match at all. That is closer up and that’s further up. I had no idea that one of our friends had started a job with Southwest Airlines, but she said, “Can I pass these along to my manager?” And I said, “You know, sure, that’s fine.”

That’s when the CEO of the Airlines found out, then invited William and his family to Dallas for a VIP tour. So, we went down to headquarters. It was amazing. Everyone there was very, very welcoming and, um, we definitely had the tour of a lifetime.

I got to go in a simulator and the simulator pilot was crashing. showing how close. It’s an experience this family will always remember. That heats up the cockpit. Because of William’s attention to detail, that might land him in a career he already loves.

Pizza is everything. What should we have for lunch? Pizza. What should we have for dinner? How about pizza? What should we have for breakfast the next day? Definitely leftover pizza.

One of the most popular foods in the world, pizza has become unique and variants have evolved based on culture and preference. There are so many variations, Italy even proposed that it be proclaimed a protected landmark.

On the PBS Idea Channel, Mike Rugnetta delves into the world of pizza, outlining its humble beginnings (in ancient times, people used “bread as a plate”—pizza began as a simple meal that quickly took on a life of its own) and its ever changing, occasionally polarizing ways of being served.

Our historical pizza journey begins with the iconic New York City Slice. In New York City alone, there are an estimated 2,000 pizza shops, the first of which that we know of having made its NYC debut in 1905 at a restaurant called Lombardi’s. This thin slice is designed for quick service—a plus for the diner on the go.

The New York City slice was developed off the template of Neapolitan pizza; the simple combination of bread, cheese, and tomatoes was considered low-class food at the time, even though these days we classify it as fancy pizza. I’d say we can probably blame that on the “less is more” design standard.

As we move through the history of pizza we learn about the focaccia-based square Sicilian slice, which evolves into the Grandma slice, which evolves into deep-dish. In other words, pizza is the Pokemon of the food world. (The video doesn’t say that, I’m just calling it so.)

Chicago style deep-dish pizza arrived on the scene in the 1940s. This evolution of the Sicilian pizza was uniquely localized, and its preference has divided pizza fans throughout the ages.

Pizza’s origins may be in Italy, but the dish has become an all-American pastime, as proved by the proliferation of frozen delivery and pizza delivery. In 1961, Dominick’s Pizza, later renamed Domino’s, invented the idea that “pizza comes to you.” This seemingly obvious idea revolutionized the industry and how we consume the savory pie today.

If we’re learning about the history of pizza, we inevitably end up with leftover pizza, a dish that magically transforms itself overnight into a different meal entirely. As Rugnetta so eloquently puts it, leftover pizza is “an artifact that remains commemorating D&D games, or Netflix marathons, all-nighters, hack-a-thons and various get-togethers.” Mmm, leftover pizza. So many memories, all of them delicious.

The eighth and final slice in this rundown is the international slice. Pizza has become such a global phenomenon that the pie takes on flavors and distinctions characteristically local to its origin. In other countries you’re likely to find toppings as varied as curry, tuna, and even Vegemite.

However, the Hungarian version is different.

First, we do not put wide noodles in it. Some Hungarian families actually prefer the soup without any kind of pasta, but the most commonly used type is called cérnametélt, which is an extremely thin pasta. The stars of the soup are definitely the vegetables and the cooked chicken. This clear golden liquid is cooked very slowly, usually for 3-4 hours, and it is forbidden to stir it. You must add the vegetables and spices very gently to the mix.

Garlic (and other types of onions)

Garlic is one of Hungarians’ all-time favourite ingredients (next to paprika). But we eat it not only because it makes everything spicy and delicious but also because of its many health benefits. Garlic is not only antibacterial, but it also has mucus-relieving effects. It can help cleanse our body. Hungarians believe that garlic is one of the most effective vegetables to eat to fight respiratory illnesses. Put it on your toast in the morning, and you are good to go.

Fun fact: Hungarians often mix garlic and honey, the two wonder cures, and have that on their toast.

Meet Pablo, the adorable tiger cub and the newest member of Budapest Zoo

Visitors to Budapest Zoo can now meet Pablo, a young tiger cub rescued during a police drug raid, who has begun a new chapter of his life at the capital’s famous zoo.

The cub is temporarily housed in the Zoo’s India House, where he will remain until his permanent relocation later in the spring.

Pablo was confiscated by Hungarian police during a raid on a property in Tiszafüred last November. Officers discovered the three-month-old tiger while carrying out a drugs-related investigation at a private residence. The 40-year-old man detained at the scene is now facing charges linked to environmental damage and the illegal keeping of a dangerous animal.

Under Hungarian law, private individuals are strictly prohibited from owning tigers. Following his rescue, Pablo was transferred to Budapest Zoo in early December. At the time, he weighed just nine kilograms and was found to be in good health. Since then, zoo veterinarians have provided him with all necessary vaccinations and medical checks.

The cub has grown rapidly and now weighs around 15 kilograms. Pablo made his first public appearance during a press event at the Zoo. Keepers noted that the young tiger appeared visibly nervous in his unfamiliar surroundings, reacting sensitively to sudden noises, much like a domestic cat. However, after some initial hesitation, he began to explore his indoor enclosure, gradually gaining confidence as he searched for food placed throughout the space.

Public access to the India House opened later that morning, drawing large crowds eager to catch a glimpse of the zoo’s newest resident. The cub’s name, Pablo, was chosen through a community vote, further increasing public interest in his story.

World’s largest vampire-themed attraction planned for Bucharest

The world’s “first and largest” Dracula-themed park is being planned in Bucharest, Romania.

The €1bn (£875m) venture will offer an immersive experience across six unique areas, including 40 attractions “blending adventure, storytelling and world-class entertainment for all ages.”

The park will be home to six different lands. “Transylvania” will include rollercoasters, a traditional village and forest, while “Dracula’s Castle” will be the site of the fictional vampire’s home, complete with ruins, a maze, a lake and a “bat coaster”. In “The Family Kingdom”, a “diverse range of vampire and supernatural creatures from global cultures” will reside.

Elsewhere, a “London Town” zone promises to “bring the dark allure of Victorian London to life”.

It includes a vampire-hunting parkour and obstacle course, a ship-swing Globe Theatre, lake boats and a horse-and-carriage track ride.

And the “Port of New Orleans” will feature a rollercoaster race with howling werewolves and Mardi Gras carnival games.

Dracula Land will also have its own “metaverse”, with visitors able to use DraculaCoin tokens in both the digital and physical worlds.

Bram Stoker’s classic novel Dracula was set partially in Romania’s Carpathian Mountains, hence the country’s long association with the vampire. The writer researched traditional European folklore as a basis for the character.

The 780,000 square-metre attraction, which also includes retail and dining offerings, will be situated 20 minutes from Bucharest city centre and 15 minutes from Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport.

The theme park forms part of a major development featuring three Dracula-themed hotels, offering around 1,200 rooms. The development will also include an aqua park and thermal spa, a racing track and motor park, a luxury shopping outlet, and a 22,500-seat arena suitable for concerts, festivals and events.

According to the official website, the venture will generate more than 5,000 direct and indirect jobs in tourism, technology and services, with a total economic impact of approximately €5bn (£4.37bn) over the next decade. An official opening could take place as early as 2027, according to the website, but ticket prices have not been confirmed.

Marco Polo’s Adventures

Marco Polo was a renowned explorer who significantly contributed to our understanding of the world during the Middle Ages. Born in Venice in 1254, Marco was part of a merchant family that profoundly influenced his adventurous spirit. He embarked on his first major travel journey at the age of 17 when he joined his father and uncle on an ambitious expedition to Asia. His accounts offered a glimpse into the Mongol Empire’s vastness and complexity, dispelling many myths about the East and fostering a greater appreciation for its cultural and technological achievements.

After spending 17 years in Asia, Marco Polo and his relatives decided to return to Venice. Their journey home was fraught with challenges, including difficult terrain and the threat of hostile forces. Finally, they decided to travel by ship to return to their homeland. They set sail from China, eventually arriving back in Venice in 1295.

Once back in Venice, Marco Polo’s tales of his exotic travel adventures captured the imagination of many. He was soon imprisoned during a war with Genoa, where he met a fellow prisoner named Rustichello da Pisa. Rustichello recorded Marco’s stories, which were later compiled into the book “The Travels of Marco Polo.” This work became one of the most famous travelogues of all time, influencing countless other explorers, including Christopher Columbus, who carried a copy on his historic voyage to the Americas.

Marco Polo’s life as an explorer continues to inspire and intrigue people today. Viewers were not loving it. McDonald's has taken down a Christmas ad that was allegedly entirely produced with artificial intelligence. After the brand was slammed with an onslaught of backlash from unhappy customers.

The 45-second advertisement for McDonald's Netherlands was first posted on their YouTube channel on December 6th and was removed just a few days later on December 9th, following the outcry online. In the video, AI-generated people are constantly experiencing strokes of bad luck. With chaotic family dinners, shopping woes, burnt cookies, failed Christmas tree decorating, and so on.

McDonald's unveiled what has to be the most god-awful ad I've seen this year, worse than Coca-Cola's. The ad is set to a song to the tune of "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" but the made-up lyrics are the song's antidote, calling the holiday season the most terrible time of the year. It's the most terrible time of the year. The commercial ends by telling viewers to hide out in McDonald's until January's here. And hide out in McDonald's till January's here.

After the harsh criticism, McDonald's initially turned off comments on the YouTube video before removing it completely. McDonald's Netherlands told the BBC that the video was meant to reflect the stressful moments that can occur during the holidays. But it was an important learning moment as the company explored the effective use of AI.

Though it's been removed from their official YouTube channel, the ad has been reposted many times on social media, where the reaction is still largely negative, criticizing the use of AI, as well as the negative message of the ad. If they were going for creepy, depressing, deeply unfunny, clumsily shot, poorly edited, and inauthentic, nailed it, someone quipped on X. It sucks. It's awful. There's no artistry, no wit, no charm, no warmth, no humanity.

Another post said, meanwhile, the studio behind the ad, The Gardening Club, is defending its work, noting on LinkedIn that the AI-generated ad still took seven intense weeks for humans to create.

Admitting that the man-hours poured into this film were more than a traditional production. Melanie Bridge, CEO of The Sweetshop, the studio's parent company, shared a similar sentiment on Instagram, saying that "The hours that went into this job far exceeded a traditional shoot." McDonald's isn't the only company that's recently faced backlash for AI-generated ads.

Coca-Cola's Holidays are Coming campaign featured two AI-generated commercials. Italian fashion house Valentino was also slammed after unveiling an advertisement featuring artificial intelligence, with trendsetters trashing the release as cheap and tacky.

I feel there was there’s so much coverage and media on this and so many updates. I’m not sure exactly where they’re at, but yeah. So it’s a big story. It’s turned into a big thing. And they’re still doing it. 12 News journalist William Pitts talked with both of them today. Jamal, I can’t believe that actually 10 years ago, I was in your high school interviewing you in a classroom. That’s the weird part for me. That’s the weird part for me.

Yes. That’s crazy. I can’t believe 10 years ago I graduated.

10 years since that first mistaken Thanksgiving, when Wanda Dench texted Jamal Hinton by mistake. She thought it was her grandson’s number. He answered, “No, but can I get a plate?” Wanda said, “Of course, that’s what grandmas do.” And a tradition was born. Now, 10 years later, they’re still meeting for dinner, and people still love them.

You know, that dumbfounds me. You know, I’ve said many a time. You know, the first year, I kind of get it. You know, you know, for regular people like us. You get 15 minutes of fame in the news. For the media to keep coming every year to want to interview us and find out what we’re up to and doing, and we’re doing the same thing all the time. Um, it still it I I it still surprises me.

This year, it’s Jamal’s turn to host. Yes, I’m going to meet his family for the first time. For the first time. You 10 years you’ve never? Nope. Never met his family. That’s right. In 10 years, Wanda’s never met Jamal’s family. And in 10 years, Jamal has also never cooked.
