Újévi kifejezések és idiómák https://www.5percangol.hu/phrasal_verbs_idioms_main/szokincsfejlesztes-the-new-year/ Sun, 28 Dec 2025 23:00:23 +0000 https://cmsteszt.5percangol.hu/vocabulary-builder-idioms-and-phrases-for-the-new-year/ New Year is a time when we often take stock of our life (think about what is good or bad about it). We may feel that we should draw a line under the past (finish with it and forget about it) and make a fresh start. This post looks at idioms and other phrases connected with this phenomenon.

If we decide to stop doing something we consider to be bad and to start behaving in a better way, we can say that we are going to turn over a new leaf. We might decide to kick a habit such as smoking (stop doing it), have a crack at (try) a new hobby, or even leave a dead-end job (one with no chance of promotion) or finish a relationship that isn’t going anywhere.

Of course, many of these things are difficult. You may have decided to give up sweets once and for all (definitely and for ever), but that’s easier said than done when you receive a birthday box of your favourite chocolates. If you have a bad day or two, it’s easy to feel that you are back to square one (have made no progress). However, people who advise on such things will tell you that it’s not all or nothing – if you break your resolution, it’s not the end of the world and you can soon be back on the straight and narrow (doing what you should be doing).

In order to stick to a resolution, there are some strategies you can use. First, you could put your money where your mouth is (pay money to show you are serious about something), for instance by taking out a gym membership to get fit. One common piece of advice is to take it one day at a time (not focus too much on the long-term goal). After all, as they say, Rome wasn’t built in a day.

Another is not to bite off more than you can chew (not try to do too much) – we all know someone whose New Year’s resolution to ‘renovate their house’ means that they and their family are still living in a building site ten years later. It’s also important to be realistic – with the best will in the world (even with a lot of effort), a chain-smoking couch potato (lazy person) isn’t likely to give up cigarettes and go running five times a week. It may be a good idea to get the ball rolling (start) with a more modest aim.

Some people are very successful in their resolutions. Once they’ve decided to bite the bullet (do something difficult), they get their act together (organize themselves effectively)   achieving what they want to achieve. If they manage to stay the course (not give up), they will see their efforts bear fruit.

And finally, I could not leave this topic without one well-known proverb: the road to hell is paved with good intentions, which means that although people often intend to be good, they often fail at it.

Happy New Year!

Mit ünneplünk adventkor? https://www.5percangol.hu/egyeb_video/what-is-advent/ Sun, 30 Nov 2025 09:48:11 +0000 https://cmsteszt.5percangol.hu/what-is-advent/

What is Advent?

Advent is the period that leads into Christmas. It’s an important time of preparation and expectant waiting. In this lesson you’re going to learn about what Advent means in the UK. Advent is the Anglicisation of the Latin word ‘adventus’. What does ‘adventus’ mean? The answer is at the end of the video. Advent is the beginning of the liturgical year or church year, and begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas so it always falls between the 27th November and the 3rd December. The religious meaning behind the advent period is to anticipate and to prepare for the second coming of Christ by anticipating and preparing for Christmas. The lighting of an advent wreath candle is a common way to countdown to Christmas. The wreath is made of evergreen branches and has four candles arranged around it. The candles represent the four Sundays of advent and one candle is lit on each Sunday in Advent. Often there is fifth candle in the centre and this last candle is lit on Christmas Day. Advent is also a countdown for the non-religious as advent calendars are a very popular form of confectionary. These are a type of calendar that have a door for every day of Advent. Behind each door is an item, usually chocolate and people use them as a countdown to Christmas. The chocolates are often made into the shape of Christmas icons such as mistletoe and bells.

Advent is the time when Christmas preparations really move up a gear. Presents are wrapped, trees are decorated, and every town and city becomes Christmassy thanks to decorations and illuminations.

And now here is the answer to the earlier quiz. Advent is the Anglicisation of the Latin word ‘adventus’.  What does ‘adventus’ mean? It means ‘coming’ or ‘arrival’. Advent is literally the arrival of Christmas. In the past many loan words were anglicised to make them easier for English speakers to understand.

Let’s go Dutch! … de mi köze ehhez a hollandoknak? https://www.5percangol.hu/egyeb_video/lets-go-dutch/ Sun, 28 Sep 2025 08:13:14 +0000 https://cmsteszt.5percangol.hu/lets-go-dutch/

Jeff:  That was quite enjoyable!

Ella:  Yeah! Great decision. I like this place a lot.

Waitress:  Here’s your bill.

Ella:  I’m so full!

Jeff:  That was great. It was worth every penny.

Ella:  I’m glad we got dessert.

Jeff:  Everything else is going good?

Ella:  Yeah! Just…just getting tired of the way things get changed up at work a little bit, but…what are you going to do.

Jeff:  Yeah. So, what’s the damage? That’s not bad. I was thinking we’d go Dutch on this?

Ella:  What… what’s that?

Jeff:  Split it down the middle?

Ella:  Perhaps…

Jeff:  You’re fine with that?

Ella:  Yeah… super chill.

Jeff:  What’s chill for you is chill for me.

Ella:  Yeah… totally.

Waitress:  Just split it down the middle?

Jeff:  Oh yeah. We’re going Dutch tonight.

Waitress:  Great!

Ella:  Yay, Dutch…

Jeff:  Perfect!

Ella:  Hello? Hey, oh my gosh. So, I’m still on my date here, and we had to go Dutch. You know, like, split down the middle? Yeah! What the heck? He’s a lawyer! Is he cheap, or something? I don’t understand. Like, with Mason, I never had to pay for anything. He, like, paid for my student loans, like, there was no question. Like, what’s the deal here? What’s going on? Oh God, he’s coming back. Gotta go.

Jeff:  Alright! What’s up? What do you say?

Ella:  Oh, all good! Yeah!

Jeff:  On to the rest of the night!

Ella:  Yeah!

Jeff:  Let’s do it!

Traditionally, when American couples go out on a date, the man pays for everything. But that’s not always how it goes. Sometimes the woman will treat, and sometimes, they’ll split the cost, or go Dutch. When it comes time to pay for a meal or some drinks, it can be a little confusing if one person plans to go Dutch and the other doesn’t. It’s common for friends to go Dutch, and some couples like to do it, too. But if they haven’t been out before, there’s no way of knowing. See what happens when Jeff and Ella get the check after dinner.

Kirándulás a legszebb magyar tavakhoz – The best lakes in Hungary https://www.5percangol.hu/mindenfele/the-best-lakes-to-visit-in-hungary/ Sat, 21 Jun 2025 05:47:54 +0000 https://www.5percangol.hu/?p=50501 Hungary is rich in natural heritage, and there are plenty of beautiful lakesides to visit at any time of the year. The country houses the largest thermal water cave system in the world as well as the largest natural grasslands in Europe, and its landscape would be incomplete without the stunning lakes.

Lake Bokodi

Lake Bokodi offers an interesting site for visitors, as the cooling pond houses the popular tourist attraction, the Bokod Floating Houses. As the lake is used as the local power plant’s cooling pond, it never freezes, therefore the tiny stilt village is built on the water. The lake and the floating village became a beloved attraction back in 2014, when the popular search engine, Bing, used a moody photo of the misty cabins as their cover photo. Before this, only the locals and dedicated fishermen were aware of the picturesque spot.

Tarn of Megyer-hegy

The Tarn of Megyer-hegy is situated in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county. It is an attractive hiking and climbing spot as it is surrounded by large cliffs and can only be reached on foot. Its hiddenness and secluded location add to its charm and make it a popular tourist destination. The artificial lake once functioned as a quarry, and now offers one of the most gorgeous views in the entire region.

Tarn of Jósvafő

Hidden in Jósvafő village in the Aggtelek National Park, the Tarn of Jósvafő is a beautiful turquoise lake surrounded by trees and forests. It is situated close to the Baradla cave, the largest stalactite cave in Hungary, so you get the chance to visit two unique spots in one day. The turquoise lake was created back in the 1930s from the spring in the same area. The spring has been used as a mill and a way to use hydroelectric power.

Lake Hévíz

Being the second-largest thermal lake in the world, Lake Hévíz is one of the most popular destinations for both domestic and international tourists. It is visited by people from all around the world for the lake’s healing properties. The Hévíz Spa is built around the lake to help visitors enjoy the benefits of the healing lake. The water temperature can reach 25 °C in the winter and 35-36 °C in the summer, as the water is constantly moving with warm water moving upwards to the surface. This movement helps to keep the lake warm while providing a special massaging effect to the human skin.

Lake Fertő

Lake Fertő is a shared gem between Hungary and neighbouring Austria. It is the biggest saltwater lake in Europe. The lake and its surroundings are a natural marvel with unique biodiversity and a scenic landscape. The lake is on the border of the two countries and is also bordered by two geological regions: the Little Hungarian Plain and the Sopron Mountains. The lake is Europe’s westernmost steppe lake, making it a unique home for some migratory birds, plants and other wildlife.

Lake Deseda

Lake Deseda located in a hidden corner in the north of Kaposvár is a lesser-known gem in the country. It was made by raising a dam in the 1970s for industrial utilisation. The lake is only 8 km long and is bordered by nature on one side and the city of Kaposvár on the other. On the lake’s peninsula, visitors can learn more about nature and the lake in the local arboretum, while cyclists can take a 17 km long track around the lake.

Lake Fehér

As part of the Kiskunság National Part, Lake Fehér is the largest saltwater lake located entirely in Hungary. The lake and the surrounding wildlife are carefully protected as it homes 300 different bird species and is a popular layover for many migratory birds in Europe. During the migration period, cranes, wild geese and teals are visible on the lake making it a perfect spot for bird and wildlife enthusiasts as well as nature photographers.

Lake Hámori

Lying among the mountains in Lilafüred, next to the castle-hotel, Lake Hámori has a unique atmosphere. The lake is surrounded by beautiful forests with misty treetops. Taking a boat tour on the emerald-coloured water gives an amazing view of the mountains in any season, while hikers can discover the valley by foot or bike. Lilafüred, the “Pearl of Bükk” is stunning in itself, but Lake Hámori is the cherry on top and a significant element in the region’s visual identity.

Supper or Dinner? – Mi a különbség a két szó között? https://www.5percangol.hu/szokincs_kozossegi_anyagok/supper-or-dinner/ Tue, 10 Jun 2025 08:00:18 +0000 https://cmsteszt.5percangol.hu/supper-or-dinner-whats-the-difference/ In parts of the US, supper and dinner are used interchangeably to refer to the evening meal, but elsewhere dinner is the midday meal, akin to lunch, and supper, the evening meal. What do these words really mean?

The word dinner does not necessarily imply the time of day. Depending on where you are, it may mean the midday meal or the evening meal, but it always refers to the main meal of the day. The word dinner comes from the Vulgar Latin word disjējūnāre meaning “to break one’s fast.”

Supper, on the other hand, is associated with the evening. It comes from the Old French word souper meaning “evening meal.” It has traditionally been used in the context of the last meal taken by Jesus before his crucifixion, known as the Last Supper.

So if someone asks you over for dinner, how do you know what time they expect you? That may depend on where you are. In 1828, Noah Webster wrote that “The dinner of fashionable people would be the supper of rustics,” reflecting the prominence of dinner as the term for a midday meal in some rural parts of the country. Regardless of time of day, if you are going over for dinner, you can expect a feast.

More recent data from Google suggest that use of the word supper has been declining since the beginning of the 1900s, while the use of lunch has been increasing. Dinner holds the top spot on the lexical food chain as the most widely used term of the three. Which term do you use most often?

Mother’s Day – Anyák napja https://www.5percangol.hu/szokincs_kozossegi_anyagok/this-month-mothers-day-anyak-napja/ Fri, 02 May 2025 22:00:40 +0000 https://cmsteszt.5percangol.hu/this-month-mothers-day/ Beszéljünk az anyák napjáról angolul!

Mother’s Day has been celebrated around the world since ancient times, sometimes as part of a religious event, more and more as a commercial holiday, but always to honor motherhood and mothers, their roles in our families and society. However, the celebration of this holiday falls on various dates in many parts of the world. In most cultures it is held sometime in spring, mostly on the second Sunday in the month of May.

In Hungary Mother’s Day falls on the first Sunday of May. It has been a holiday since 1925 when it was first celebrated by the Hungarian Red Cross Youth in connection with the Catholic traditions honoring the Virgin Mary. Three years later it was made an official school holiday.

Some say the tradition of Mother’s Day can be traced back to Ancient Greece, the spring festivals dedicated to Cybele, mother goddess of fertility and Rhea, mother of gods, and later to the Romans’ Hilaria festival. The Hindu religion also preceded the Western-type holiday by a couple of centuries with its “Mother Pilgrimage fortnight” celebration. It has also been present as the religious Mothering Sunday celebration in the United Kingdom since the 17th century. However, its modern-day, capitalist version originated from America.

There could be some debate about who actually started the Mother’s Day tradition in the US. In 1872 Julia Ward Howe created a special day for mothers through a protest for peace in Boston, remembering all mothers who were left without sons and husbands following the Franco-Prussian War. However, Anna M. Jarvis’ attempts to establish a nationally and internationally acknowledged public Mother’s Day holiday were far more effective. She chose the second Sunday of May for the day to commemorate her own and all the other mothers of the world. She dedicated seven years of energy and time campaigning to reach her goal. In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson officially recognized Mother’s Day as a holiday. To Jarvis’s great sorrow and disappointment, it soon became commercialized by florists, greeting card companies, candy and gift shop merchants. It is through their propaganda that Mother’s Day soon appeared on the European continent as well and spread throughout the world in its modern form. Anna Jarvis, however, spent the rest of her life fighting against the holiday she had established.

The reason why the ‘original’ date of Mother’s Day was changed in some countries and cultures was because people wanted to fit it into already existing religious, historical, legendary or even political celebrations dedicated to motherhood.

For example, Mother’s Day in Bolivia is also the date of a battle in which women participated and in some ex-communist countries people honor mothers on the socialist International Women’s Day.

We would be nowhere without our mothers but what about our fathers?

Father’s Day, which is celebrated around the world on the third Sunday of June and on other dates, also originates from America. It was founded not long after Jarvis’s Mother’s Day in 1910 in Washington by Sonora Smart Dodd who felt her father, a Civil War veteran raising six children as a single parent, deserved to be honored as any mother, together with other fathers of the world. Although at first it did not become as successful as its counterpart, soon it was also discovered by manufacturers of ties, tobacco, pipes and other typically father-presents who helped Sonora spread the holiday with commercial promotion. Eventually, decades after its creation, it only became truly accepted and popular in the mid 1980’s.
