Winter Holidays and How to Celebrate Them

Winter is the most exciting, most enchanting of the seasons and we all look forward to it. The sparkling white snow makes even the dullest and plainest neighbourhood spectacular and beautiful to look at. There is nothing like sitting in the warm room near the fireplace, with a cup of tea or hot chocolate looking out of the window and watching the whirling snowflakes in the crisp and cold winter air. If you like winter sports it’s fun to go out and enjoy the snow. You can build a snowman, make snow angels in the snow or have a snowball fight. You don’t even need any equipment for that. If you are more into sports and like travelling in winter, you can try skiing or snowboarding in the mountains. Skating rinks are easy to find in bigger cities and if you are lucky enough to have freezing cold for weeks you might as well try creating your own skating rink. You only need a relatively big and flat concrete area, a lot of water and some expertise of how to make a nice smooth layer of ice which is suitable for skating.

Winter holidays are another attraction of the season. Santa Claus, Christmas, New Year’s Eve – just to mention the three most important ones. Preparations for the celebrations usually start early. You don’t have to wait until December to start the Christmas shopping. It seems that the Christmas season begins earlier and earlier each year. Shops start to sell presents, decorations and seasonal goods at the end of October already. Whether you like it or not one thing is for sure nobody can escape the craze of trying to find some suitable present for their loved ones. Some people like giving expensive store-bought presents, others prefer giving and receiving handmade ones. Obviously the season is the most exciting for children. Santa Claus brings presents to well-behaved children if they put their clean boots or shoes on the windowsill. Not so well-behaved or naughty children cannot be sure of getting sweets so probably they don’t sleep very well at night on 6th December when Santa Claus comes.

After the magic of Christmas time you have to wait only a few days for the next celebration to come. New Year’s Eve is a noisy celebration, with parties, crackers and fireworks. People go out to the squares in bigger cities they dance, drink champagne and wait for midnight to come. They usually count the last few seconds of the year in unison and sing the national anthem to welcome the new year. And on the 1st of January it’s time to make some New Year’s resolutions

Advent 2019 Day 2: Holy crap, it’s snowing! https://www.5percangol.hu/zenes_video/advent-2019-day-2-holy-crap-its-snowing/ Mon, 02 Dec 2019 11:40:42 +0000 https://cmsteszt.5percangol.hu/advent-2019-day-2-holy-crap-its-snowing/

The Cog is Dead: Holy Crap, It’s Snowing!

Holy crap, it’s snowing!

The flakes are falling down, the wind is blowing.

The roads are closed, there’s nowhere I’ll be going now.

I guess today I’m staying home.

Oh yeah. But what is this “snow” you ask?

Water freezes into icy flakes.

It’s sort of a frozen form of precipitation.

Blankets all the houses, trees and lakes.

And everything is covered in a layer of white!

Holy crap, it’s snowing!

That’s right!

The inches on the ground just keep on growing.

It’s bright!

The snow reflects the sun and it is glowing now!

I think I’ll put my goggles on.

It’s important!  You know snow blindness is a real thing!

When temperatures reach 0° Celsius or 32° Fahrenheit

Atmospheric water vapor freezes into beautiful geometric crystals.

These crystals fall from the sky down to the Earth in what is commonly known as snow.  And what’s that I see out there?

Holy crap, it’s snowing!

Oh my!

And not a single blade of grass is showing.

It’s cold!

And it’s not showing any signs of slowing soon.

I guess it’s time to go inside.  Yup!

Do you remember the rhymes from the lyrics?

1. snowing – ……

2. flakes – ……

3. snowing – ……

Key

1. blowing

2. lakes

Advent Calendar Day 15: Deck the Halls – Words for Decorating https://www.5percangol.hu/szokincs_kozossegi_anyagok/advent-calendar-day-14-deck-the-halls-words-for-decorating/ Sat, 15 Dec 2018 15:59:45 +0000 https://cmsteszt.5percangol.hu/advent-calendar-day-14-deck-the-halls-words-for-decorating/ The Christmas season is once again here and around the world, people who celebrate this festival are making their homes look festive and Christmassy by putting up decorations. In the past, Christmas decorations were usually quite simple – a Christmas tree hung with a few familiar ornaments that would come out year after year from a dusty box in the attic. Paper chains might be hung along the wall and an empty stocking or two for Santa placed hopefully by the fireplace. Christmas cards would be displayed on shelves and windowsills. Nowadays, for many of us, there are more decorative options.

For most people, the decorative centrepiece of the Christmas season is still the Christmas tree itself (real or artificial) which we might decorate or trim with any number of different items. Baubles (=ball-shaped decorations) are still a popular choice. Some people like a themed tree with decorations in a limited number of colours – red and gold, for example. Other people take a more relaxed approach, hanging ornaments in a range of colours and styles. Many of those ornaments will have been store-bought, but one or two might have been lovingly created by a small child in the family. They may take the form of stars, angels, reindeer, presents, Santa Claus or snowflakes.

Some people add extra sparkle to their tree by draping it with tinsel (=a long string of shiny material). Most people put some form of fairy lights (=small electric lights on a string) around the boughs of the tree. If they’ve had those fairy lights for several years, they’ll hope that they’re still working this year!

Away from the tree, people might hang a wreath (=arrangement of leaves in a circular shape) on their front door. Wreaths are usually made out of holly or branches from a fir tree as we associate these evergreen plants with Christmas. Another popular plant used for decoration at this time of year is mistletoe, which has white berries. It is often hung above doors as it is a tradition for people to kiss beneath it.

Of course, Christmas decorations are not restricted to the inside of the home. In recent years, more and more of us choose to illuminate the outside of our houses and apartments with lights in the shape of Father Christmas, snowmen, icicles, etc.

Season’s Greetings to all of you!

The Italian capital woke up to this sight. After an Arctic storm dusted it with snow overnight. It is the heaviest snowfall in the past six years leaving a few inches of snow in the streets. Most of the schools are closed and public transport services are reduced. The army was sent to help clear the streets but Romans are enjoying every bit of snow! From just playing around in the squares to skiing down the hills at the Circo Massimo. But Rome isn’t the only city covered in snow. Lots of Northern European cities have been hit by the Arctic blast. Temperatures are unusually low for this time of the year making it the coldest winter in almost a decade. But the cold comes with some perks: like these stunning images of Rome. It is so beautiful!

Watch thousands of people walk over Balaton https://www.5percangol.hu/vocabulary/balaton-atcsuszas/ Fri, 03 Feb 2017 09:13:40 +0000 https://cmsteszt.5percangol.hu/balaton-atcsuszas/ Frigid temperatures in early January froze over a giant portion of Lake Balaton – the largest lake in central Europe. Instead of staying inside, locals braved the cold and ventured out onto the ice. And it wasn’t just a few — people flocked to the frozen lake by the thousands. Here’s some epic footage of the event.

Lake Balaton is the largest lake in Hungary. In late January 2017, its surface froze over. How did the locals celebrate? By strolling across the body of water nicknamed “The Hungarian Sea”. Between 8,000 to 10,000 Hungarians made the 3.2-mile icy trek from Badacsony to Fonyód on ice skates on sledges or their own two feet. Authorities only reported one injury (a broken leg). We just hope they’re already friends – it would be a bad place to break the ice.
