Ahogy az a példákból is látszik, a SHOULD illetve az OUGHT TO használatával javaslatokat tudsz adni valakinek (általában a közel jövőre vonatkozólag: tehát kinek mit kéne/ nem kéne csinálnia).

SZABÁLYOK, FELHÍVÁSOK, INSTRUKCIÓK

Come quickly! You should see this! – Gyere gyorsan! Ezt látnod kellene!
You should drink a lot of hot tea! – the doctor said to the patient. – Sok meleg teát kéne innia! – mondta az orvos a betegnek.

LEHETŐSÉG KIFEJEZÉSE

The train should be here very soon. – A vonatnak hamarosan itt kellene lennie. 

Akkor is a SHOULD módbeli segédigét kell használni, ha azt szeretnénk kifejezni, hogy valami nagy valószínűséggel be fog következni. 

You shouldn’t touch that! – Nem kéne hozzányúlnod! 

Ha szeretnék tanácsot adni valakinek, akkor a következő kifejezéseket használd:  I think … should … I don’t think … should … I think your husband should lose some weight. – Azt gondolom, a férjednek le kéne adnia pár kilót. Yes, and I think he shouldn’t drink so much beer! – Igen, és azt gondolom nem kellene annyi sört innia.  Ha meg szeretnéd kérdezni valakinek a véleményét valamiről, akkor a következő kifejezést használd:  Do you think … should? Nobody wants to employ me. Do you think I should change my style? – Senki nem akar alkalmazni. Gondolod, hogy meg kéne változtatnom a stílusomat?

FIT VAGY SUIT?

A ‘fit’ és a ‘suit’ igéknek nagyon hasonló a jelentése, ezért könnyű összekeverni őket. Ne tedd! A ‘to fit’ azt  jelenti, hogy valaminek jó a mérete/formája (pl. ruha, cipő), tehát se nem túl nagy, se nem túl kicsi.

Például:

These trousers don’t fit me, I have to change them. They are too small for me. –  Ennek a nadrágnak nem jó a mérete. Ki kell cserélnem. Túl kicsi nekem.

This sweater fits you. You don’t have to change it. It’s the perfect size. – Ez a pulóver jó rád. Nem kell kicserélned. Tökéletes a mérete.

Ha az a ruhadarab/hajviselet/cipő/stb. jól áll annak, aki hordja, akkor nem a ’fit’ hanem a ’to suit’ igét kell használnod!

Például:

This hairstyle doesn’t suit you. You look older now. – Ez a frizura nem áll jól neked. Idősebbnek nézel most ki.

These boots don’t suit me. They’re too elegant for me. I’m more sporty than elegant. – Ez a csizma nem áll jól nekem. Túlságosan elegáns. Én inkább sportos vagyok, mint elegáns.

The Swedish popstar, who co-created Roxette with Per Gessle in 1986, died on Monday morning after suffering from a long-term illness.

She was best known for her Roxette hits It Must Have Been Love – featured in the 1990 box office hit Pretty Woman – Joyride, Listen To Your Heart and The Look.

The pop duo were huge in their time, selling more than 75 million records around the world and scoring 19 Top 40 hits, which propelled them to the height of fame.

“Marie Fredriksson is most mourned by her husband Mikael Bolyos and their two children,” the family wrote in a statement.

They added that their wife and mother will be buried quietly with only the closest family present.

Her co-star Per also paid tribute to Marie, tweeting: “Time goes by so quickly. It’s not that long ago we spent days+nights in my tiny apartment sharing impossible dreams. And what a dream we eventually got to share! I’m honoured to have met your talent+generosity. All my love goes to you+your family. Things will never be the same.”

Marie leaves behind her husband Mikael and their two children, 26-year-old daughter Inez Josefin and son Oscar, 23.

She previously battled a brain tumour in 2002, having been diagnosed after fainting at home.

Doctors warned that she only had a 20% chance of survival, but she managed to recover after a long and gruelling course of treatment.

Sadly, the band took a 17-year break as Marie dealt with the health problems she developed as a result of radiation damage from her treatment.

She reunited with Roxette and toured in 2011, then performed at the Swedish royal weddings of Princess Victoria in 2010 and Princess Madeleine in 2013.

Marie was forced to give up her beloved music in 2016 when doctors told her she would no longer be able to tour or record.

MAY, MIGHT

A may egy módbeli segédige (jó, persze azt is jelenti, hogy május, ha nagybetűvel írjuk, de ennek semmi köze ehhez), ebből kifolyólag éppúgy, mint a többi társa, nem változtatja meg az alakját. Egyszóval jelen időben mindig may lesz, illetve az őt követő ige előtt sosincs to.

Ez persze nem jelenti azt, hogy a may használatával nem lehet különböző időszemléleteket kifejezni. Nézd csak:

Most pedig nézzük meg sorban, hogy mire is tudjuk használni a may-t.

A may segítségével alaphelyzetben lehetőséget tudunk kifejezni: azt jelenti, hogy valami valószínűleg meg fog történni/valami valószínűleg éppen történik/valami valószínűleg már megtörtént. Gyakorta fejez ki egy olyan cselekvést, amely valószínűleg bekövetkezhet a jövőben:          

Be careful! The dog may bite you! – Légy óvatos! Megharaphat a kutya!

Ha egy olyan cselekvésről beszélünk, amely valószínűleg megtörtént a múltban, akkor a

MAY + HAVE + ige 3. alakja

szerkezetet kell használni:

I may have made a mistake again. – Lehet, hogy már megint hibát követtem el.

Amennyiben a may segédigével lehetőséget fejezünk ki, úgy a tagadó alakja simán may not, viszont nincs ebben az esetben kérdő formája. Tehát ilyen nem létezik:

May you have lost your passport? – Lehet, hogy elhagytad az útleveledet?

helyette:

Could you have lost your passport? – Lehet, hogy elhagytad az útleveledet?

A may segítségével olyan mondatokat is tudunk alkotni, amelyek engedély kérésre/adásra vonatkoznak.

May I use the bathroom? – Használhatom a mellékhelyiséget?

You may come in. – Bejöhet.

You may not come in now. – Most nem jöhet be, kérem!

Ha ebben az esetben tagadjuk a may-t, akkor az azt jelenti, hogy nem adunk/nem kapunk engedélyt valamire.

Most pedig nézzük a might-ot! Tulajdonképpen a may és a might között nincs különösebb különbség, a MAY használata gyakoribb. Egy esetben nem lehet MAY-t használni a MIGHT helyett, ha az a szituáció, amiről szó van, nem valós, hanem elképzelt helyzeten alapul. Ez leginkább a 2nd Conditional-ra jellemző:

If I knew her better, I might ask her out. – Ha jobban ismerném, lehet, hogy elhívnám randira.

There are many different kinds of homes that we live in. You can live in a flat, in an apartment, in a bungalow or in a house. But what makes them different?

Flat:

Sometimes living in a flat is a simple way to get on the property ladder when you are thinking about buying a home. Flats are often part of a larger building that has been separated in to smaller living spaces. The kitchen area is sometimes an open area shared with the living room and your flat will also have a bathroom and bedroom.

Apartment:

You may live in an apartment. An apartment is like a flat, but it is often part of a much bigger complex of buildings. Because apartments are often found in tall buildings you will have to use the lift or elevator to get to your home.

Bungalow:

A bungalow is a word given to a house that is on one ground floor level only, a bit like a chalet. A bungalow does not have any stairs, because all of the living area is on one floor. This usually means you will have a kitchen, bathroom, lounge or living room and bedrooms. This kind of home is popular with older people because you don’t have any stairs to climb when you go to bed.

House

A house is a property that is usually built on two or more floors. On the ground floor you will find the kitchen, the lounge and maybe dining room where you eat your meals. Upstairs you will find the bathrooms and bedrooms. In some larger houses you may also have a small toilet downstairs.  Also in a larger house you may find a garage where you can park your car or bike.
