The Hungarian Grand Prix

This event draws visitors from around the world and the sweltering end-of-July heat cannot deter car racing enthusiasts. The race track Hungaroring is situated in the vicinity of Budapest and has been home to the Hungarian Grand Prix since 1986. The twisty and narrow circuit makes overtaking difficult, therefore the drivers who qualify best have the best chance to win.

Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton hold the record by winning 4 races each in the 70-lap race. Hamilton is hoping to win this year again, because he is in 2nd place behind his teammate Nico Rosberg at the moment, which promises an interesting race. The leading teams at the Hungarian Grand Prix are McLaren with 10, Williams with 7 and Ferrari with 5 victories.

Tickets to the event are quite expensive and about 75% of the spectators come from abroad.  In 2013 over 250,000 people visited the Hungarian Grand Prix but this year the numbers will probably be affected by the re-opening of the Austrian Grand Prix. Guests who have a weekend ticket can take a peek at the pit on Thursday afternoon (July 24) but it is only on Friday that the practice sessions start. After three practice sessions, the starting position is decided during the qualifying session, which takes places on Saturday, 2 pm.

Although Formula 1 racing is the main attraction, the GP2 and GP3 series will be practicing and racing on these days as well. GP2 was launched in 2005 and serves as a feeder series to Formula 1 and GP3 in 2010, as a feeder series to GP2. These shorter races (17 to 37 laps, depending on the race) are a great way to prepare for a future career in Formula 1. In fact many drivers have gone on to compete in the real thing, like Heikki Kovalainen, Niko Rosberg, Kamui Kobayashi and Lewis Hamilton.

In the 1980s and 1990s, the Grand Prix trophies were provided by the Hollóháza Porcelain Manufactory. With a few exceptions, the trophies have been manufactured in the traditional Herend Porcelain Manufactory since 2006 and they depict important Hungarian landmarks: the Parliament, the Chain Bridge and Buda Castle, for example.
