Humans are fragile creatures, however, there are some men and women who have been able to survive things that could kill everyone. Let’s take a moment to celebrate these unkillable superhumans.
In December 1912, Mawson, an Australian explorer, and two other expedition members left their base and went off on an exploration of Antarctica. One of the members fell into a crevasse and was killed. Forced to battle on, Mawson and Xavier Mertz turned back towards their base camp, with only their dying dogs to eat and dwindling water supplies. Both of them suffered from skin peeling off and a few days later Mertz died. Mawson, filled with wounds and frostbites, he went forth with his journey to the base camp. After a while of walking, he fell into a crevasse and dangled for a few moments before pulling himself up. Upon reaching the base, he was told that the ship for his rescue has just left a few hours ago, believing he was dead and will arrive 10 months from departure.
Jose Salvador Alvarenga
Jose Salvador Alvarenga, a 37-year-old fisherman was lost at sea for 13 months, after setting off for a day of shark fishing near the Mexican coast where he lived, 5,500 miles away. Some have expressed skepticism about his story, but he would have been far from the first to endure such seemingly unendurable odds.
In 2003, a young climber named Aron Ralston set out to conquer Bluejohn Canyon in Utah. When an 800-pound boulder shifted, Ralston found himself trapped against the canyon wall with his hand crushed under the boulder. After six days of what he calls “sleep-deprived, meandering thoughts,” Ralston made the difficult decision to use his multitool to amputate his own arm and free himself. He then repelled to safety. Ralston’s story was made famous in the movie 127 Hours.
