Doggy Heaven At Shanghai’s Pet Mega Store
For the pampered pooches of Shanghai the city’s Pet Zoo Mega Store must surely be doggy heaven.
Arranged over three floors and covering almost 2000 square meters, the store boasts a five-star grooming parlour, hair colouring centre, dog hotel, canine hospital and extensive shop.
The grooming center is all open-plan, with glass walls, so that the owners can watch as their beloved pets relax with a spa treatment. These include, amongst others, natural mud massage spas and dog ‘jacuzzis’. During the sweltering warmer month a particularly popular option is the ‘summer coat haircut’, which involves a short shave all over the body except for the head, ears and tail.
Traditionally, there has been a long tradition in China of dogs being venerated, with the elite of society keeping them as status symbols during ancient times. When the Communist party came to power it condemned pet ownership as bourgeois but the practice is now becoming popular again.
