Oscars 2013: Daniel Day-Lewis makes history as first man to win three best actor awards

Anne Hathaway won best supporting actress for her role as tragic prostitute Fantine in Les Miserables. The actress, who only stars in the film for 15 minutes, fought back tears as she accepted her award and thanked her husband along with everyone who worked on the film. Christoph Waltz picked up best supporting actor for Django Unchained and thanked ‘the creator of his awe-inspiring world, Quentin Tarantino’. It was a night short of surprises with the only real shock coming when Ang Lee was named best director for Life of Pi – an award widely expected to go to Lincoln’s Spielberg. Ben Affleck followed on from his success at the Golden Globes and Producers Guild Award by taking home the best picture prize for Argo. A teary Adele, who also performed on the night, won the Oscar for best original song for Skyfall. She thanked her songwriting partner Paul Epworth for ‘believing in me all the time’ and her boyfriend Simon Konecki in an emotional acceptance speech. She gushed: ‘My man, I love you’ before adding to the crowd: ‘You’re all amazing as well.’The other big British win on the night came when Day-Lewis was announced as best actor for Lincoln.
