to call up
meaning: to phone somebody
magyarul: felhívni valakit
example: I’ll call him up later. – Majd felhívom később.

to put through
meaning: to connect by telephone
magyarul: kapcsolni valakit
example: Could you put me through to the manager?– Kapcsolná  az ügyvezetőt?

to put on
meaning: to give somebody the telephone
magyarul: adni valakit /hívni valakit a telefonhoz
example: Hello Mrs. Maple. Could you put Tommy on?– Jó napot Mrs. Maple. Adná Tommy-t?

to hold on / hang on
meaning: to stay connected on the phone line
magyarul: tartani a vonalat
example: I’ll check if there are any free tables for tonight. Please, hold on. – Megnézem van – e ma estére szabad asztal. Kérem, tartsa a vonalat.

to call/ring back
meaning: to return the call
magyarul: visszahívni valakit
example: I’m really busy. Can I call you back later? – Nagyon elfoglalt vagyok. Visszahívhatlak később?

to pick up
meaning: to receive a call
magyarul: felvenni (a telefont)
example: I stopped calling her because she never picks up the phone. – Már nem hívom, mert sosem veszi fel a telefont.

to phone around
meaning: to call many people, usually to find out information
magyarul: körbetelefonálni
example: I don’t know but I’ll phone around a couple of my friends and find out. – Nem tudom, de körbetelefonálom pár barátom és kiderítem.

to listen in
meaning: 
to hear somebody else’s conversation
magyarul: hallgatózni
example: Do you also hear that strange noise? I think there is somebody listening in. – Te is hallod azt a furcsa hangot? Szerintem hallgatózik valaki.

to cut off
meaning: to stop talking because the connection broke
magyarul: megszakadt a vonal
example: He was just about to tell me his secret when we were cut off. – Éppen azon volt, hogy elárulja a titkát amikor megszakadt a vonal.

to hang up / ring off
meaning: to end the conversation on the telephone
magyarul: letenni (a kagylót)
example: She talks for hours and always feel she will never hang up/ring off. – Órákig beszél és mindig úgy érzem, hogy sosem fogja letenni a kagylót.

to ring in
meaning: to telephone your workplace to say why you’re not there
magyarul: betelefonálni (a munkahelyedre)
example: You should ring in sick if you feel so sick. – Be kellene telefonálnod, ha ennyire betegnek érzed magad.

to hang up on somebody
meaning: to end the call while the other person is still talking
magyarul: rátenni/rácsapni valakire a telefont
example: I must have said something bad again because she hung up on me. – Biztos valami rosszat mondtam megint, mert rámcsapta a telefont.
