Every language has its words for describing the sounds animals make. Sometimes they can be very strange or funny. Do you know these words and expressions in English? If not, it’s time to learn them.

Dogs – Bark – They go bow-wow.

Cats – Meow – They go meow-meow.

Cows – Moo – They go moo-moo.

Horses – Neigh – They go neigh-neigh.

Pigs – Grunt – They go oink-oink.

Sheep – Baa – They go baa-baa.

Rabbits – Squeak – They go huff-huff.

Lions - Roar

Snakes - Hiss

Donkeys – Bray – They go hee-haw.

Calves - Bleat

Bears - Growl

Goats- Bleat – They go mee-mee.

Frogs – Croak, ribbit – They go croak-croak or ribbit-ribbit.

Elephants – Trumpet

Bark – (sound), call of a dog – ugatás

Bleat – call of a sheep – bégetés

Chirp – bird call – csiripelés

Chirp – sound made by rubbing together legs or other body parts, e.g. by a cicada – ciripelés

Growling – low, guttural vocalization produced by predatory animals – üvöltés, morgás

Hiss – sound made by a snake – sziszegés

Hoot – call of an owl – huhogás

Meow – cry of a cat – nyávogás

Moo – sound of a cow – bőgés

Purr – a buzzing sound made by all members of the cat family – dorombolás

Quack – call of a duck – hápogás

Ribbit, croak – sound of some frogs or bullfrogs – brekegés

Roar – deep, bellowing outburst made by various animals – üvöltés

Screech– high-pitched or piercing sound, as made by a screech owl – visítás
