Judge rejects lawsuit over Buffalo Wild Wings’ ‘boneless wings’
A federal judge in Illinois has rejected a lawsuit filed by Chicago resident Aimen Halim, who accused Buffalo Wild Wings of misleading customers with the term “boneless wings.” Halim filed the complaint in March 2023, arguing that the name suggests the product is made from de‑boned chicken wing meat, when in reality it is made from fried chicken breast. He claimed he purchased the item believing it was genuine wing meat and would not have done so had he known the truth.
Buffalo Wild Wings responded humorously on social media, stating that their boneless wings are indeed made from white‑meat chicken, just as hamburgers contain no ham and buffalo wings contain no buffalo. The company’s light‑hearted tone contrasted with Halim’s argument that the marketing was intentionally deceptive.
U.S. District Judge John Tharp Jr. dismissed the lawsuit, explaining that “boneless wings” is a widely used and well‑understood term that has existed for more than twenty years. According to the ruling, reasonable consumers are unlikely to believe the product comes from actual chicken wings, and Halim failed to provide enough factual evidence to support his claim. While the judge acknowledged that Halim had standing because he alleged economic harm, he concluded that the complaint did not plausibly show consumer confusion.
