Blind man sentenced for 150-mile drive while drunk

A blind motorist who took his partner’s car and drove for 150 miles at night while drunk has been handed a suspended sentence. Anthony Hall, 50, who does not have a licence, was stopped by police on the M6 near Carlisle at 01:45 BST on 29 June after swerving across lanes.

Hall told police he had driven from Huddersfield after he and his partner had drunk four bottles of wine. He explained that he had gone blind about two years ago, but could see some lights and had followed an HGV’s lights on the motorway. He had planned to drive to Scotland to escape his home and finances.

Kirklees Magistrates’ Court heard Hall had admitted charges including dangerous driving, drink-driving, driving without a licence or insurance, and taking a car without consent. A breath test showed he was over the legal limit.

In mitigation, Adele Graham said her client had no previous convictions and had suffered a breakdown, acting as an “individual in crisis.”

Magistrate Tracey McErlain-Burns noted Hall’s previous good character and difficult personal circumstances. Hall was sentenced to 36 weeks in prison, suspended for 18 months, ordered to carry out rehabilitation, abstain from alcohol for 90 days, disqualified from driving for 12 months, and ordered to pay £272 in costs. No-one was injured during the incident.
