In America the biggest party is in Times Square in New York City. Loads of people attend it and millions more watch it at home. There’s a countdown to midnight and this is marked with the ball drop.

Before, during and after the ball drop, you can see and use:

1904-ben New Yorkban, amikor a The New York Times újság új helyre (a később az újságról elnevezett térre) költözött, a kiadót vezető Adolph Ochs nem tudott a szilveszteri ünnepségre tervezett tűzijátékra engedélyt szerezni. Ezért felszereltetett egy kivilágított, időjelző gömböt, amely egy perccel éjfél előtt kezdett ereszkedni, hogy aztán pontban az újév első pillanatában érje el a zászlórúd alját. Ma már egy atomórához igazított lézeres berendezés vezérli a gömböt, de néhány háborús éven kívül azóta is minden évben tömegek várják a leereszkedését.
