Where does it come from? The idiom “The pot calling the kettle black” dates back to the 1600s. In those days, both pots and kettles were made of heavy cast iron and were placed directly over open fires for cooking. Because of the smoke and soot, both items would eventually get completely blackened. Therefore, if the pot called the kettle black, it was completely ignoring its own identical appearance. The phrase gained widespread popularity after appearing in various English translations of the famous Spanish novel Don Quixote.
