The Hungarian Nameday Tradition (Névnap)
Besides their birthday, Hungarians celebrate one more special day, the nameday. Every Hungarian name has a designated day during the year to celebrate. It’s like a smaller birthday, when Hungarians usually give gifts (but only small ones, like a box of chocolates, flowers) and it’s a good reason to get together and celebrate.
Every Hungarian first name has an official day in the calendar. It’s very common to receive calls, texts, or Facebook messages saying: “Boldog névnapot!” (Happy nameday!)
In workplaces, colleagues often bring in cakes or chocolates to share.
Namedays exist in several European countries (e.g., Poland, Greece, Sweden), but in Hungary the tradition is especially strong and widely observed – even among young people.
