TESCO is to mark carbon footprint on its milk cartons – the first stage of green labelling for 500 products by the end of the year.
The move comes after a survey showed half the store’s customers now understood what “carbon footprint” meant – up from a third a year ago. A pint of milk will have the message: “The carbon footprint is 800g and we have committed to reduce it. Recycle to reduce by 40g.” Bread, toilet rolls and carrier bags will be carbon-footprinted next.
Tesco is also looking at different feeds to reduce cows’ methane emissions.
