Man known as ‘ICU Grandpa’ cuddles premature babies whose parents can’t be with them. David Deutchman has been a volunteer baby buddy for 12 years. On first inspection, it could be any photo of a proud granddad, beaming as he cradles the newest addition to the family. Thetruth behind the photo, however, is a little different.

The man captured in the image is David Deutchman. Or, as he’s referred to, ICU Grandpa.

For the last 12 years David has been a volunteer baby buddy at Scottish Rite Hospital, Atlanta. What this means is David visits premature babies whose parents aren’t able to be with them, which is a sentence guaranteed to tug the heartstrings. On Tuesdays, David goes to see the PICU babies. On Thursdays, he makes rounds in the NICU. Many of the infants spend weeks – sometimes months – in hospital.

There’s not always time for the hospital staff to give them the extra affection they need, and many of the parents have children at home who also need their love and attention, or live a distance away.

Hospital staff are full of praise for David, believing the time and care he gives these babies helps them.

Logan has been in hospital for six weeks.

His mum comes to see him daily but, every night, she has to return home to look after Logan’s older sister. On the journey back to the hospital, his mums admits feeling “anxious that he’s been missing his mommy.”
